matt-attack··on The impact of competition and DeepSeek on Nvidia
Yes, but that's entirely orthogonal to the "coding" algorithms being used and which are specifically responsible for the improvement that GP was describing.

HLS is really just a way to empower the client with the ownership of the playback logic. Let the client handle forward buffering, retries, stream selection, etc.

matt-attack··on Great CPAN modules released last week
I work for a very large well-known media company and can say that we have a decent amount of mission critical code that’s written in Perl that still just works and is actively being enhanced.
matt-attack··on Notre Dame Cathedral reopens
For what’s its worth, this conversation has been a treat to read. Not sure who I agree with.
matt-attack··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
Um because people really want to be done burning petroleum in their cars. Hybrid is just an old gas car that’s gets improved gas mileage. It’s not a real fix.
matt-attack··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Wow you couldn’t misinterpret this any more.
matt-attack··on What if you can't afford to flee a hurricane?
Sure but I find “lady just abandon your animals and save your six children” to be a reasonable take.
matt-attack··on Show HN: ts-blank-space – fast TypeScript type-stripper
So is the idea that you would run a normal compiler once in your production pipeline to check syntax, and then re-run it with ts-blank-space to generate the final bundle?

Clearly you can’t eliminate the syntax checking correct?

matt-attack··on Tesla Locks Baby in Car on 109-Degree Day for Seemingly No Reason
People constantly get locked out of cars with refused door handles. I’m struggling to understand how the door handle has anything to do with a door lock.

The car got locked somehow.

matt-attack··on Toyota Maru (1990) [pdf]
The most famous of course is the Kobayashi Maru.
matt-attack··on Starlink will provide free global cellular emergency services access (e.g. 911)
Funny I think of it as a gift FROM the people TO the US Government.
matt-attack··on U.S. Wealth Inequality [video]
Isn’t this shape just the inevitable outcome of the more sane distribution from 50 years ago if you simply add time + compound interest? Wouldn’t it be more surprising if wealth didn’t grow faster based on how much wealth you already have?
matt-attack··on Does Reasoning Emerge? Probabilities of Causation in Large Language Models
Isn’t the “life experience” that a child is missing precisely analogous to the training an LLM requires?
matt-attack··on Does Reasoning Emerge? Probabilities of Causation in Large Language Models
I don’t know if you’re correct. I don’t think you know that our brains are that different? We too need to train ourselves on massive amounts of data. I feel like the kids of reasoning and understanding I’ve seen ChatGPT do are soooo far beyond something like just processing language.
matt-attack··on How Olympic Timing Works
Well what stops others from leaning forward? Sense like not an advantage because if it helped everyone would opt to do it.
matt-attack··on How Olympic Timing Works
Wouldn’t you want longer fingernails anyway for a bigger paddle effect?
matt-attack··on A wonderful coincidence or an expected connection: why π² ≈ g
FWIW I enjoyed your original comment :)
matt-attack··on Another Look at the Voynich Manuscript
Anyone know if there’s a nice hardbound version of this? Looks like everything on Amazon is garbage.
matt-attack··on The Imminent Student-Loan Disaster
Seems to be a pretty condescending view of an 18 year old.
matt-attack··on Real time face swap and one-click video deepfake
This looks pretty cumbersome to set up. Anyone have any recommendations on the easiest platform to try this on?
matt-attack··on EVs, Hybrids Set to Exceed 50% of China Car Sales for First Time
Why would an article lump a gas burning hybrid in the same category as EV? They seem diametrically opposed.
matt-attack··on Apple Intelligence beta flagged a phishing email as "Priority"
I took it to mean the native Mail app on the iPhone. Not their email service.

I personally can’t imagine not using the native email app. It’s quite nice.

matt-attack··on We Should Stop Using JavaScript According to Douglas Crockford (2023)
Can you give an example?
matt-attack··on CNN's investigation of Airbnb's hidden camera problem [video]
It’s fascinating that you blame the listing service for the owner’s unwillingness to maintain their homes to the appropriate electrical codes.

Isn’t that like blaming the Bumble for a bad date if I meet someone on their platform.

matt-attack··on Disney's Internal Slack Breached? NullBulge Leaks 1.1 TiB of Data
Exactly. How preposterous these speaking to someone aloud is fine but using an electronic tool with logging set to OFF is someone bad. So completely inane.
matt-attack··on Disney's Internal Slack Breached? NullBulge Leaks 1.1 TiB of Data
So I guess whispering is a crime now?
matt-attack··on Disney's Internal Slack Breached? NullBulge Leaks 1.1 TiB of Data
Could you please explain this reference? I know who she is but I don’t get it.
matt-attack··on 7-Eleven is reinventing its food business to be more Japanese [video]
The narrator’s vocal fry was so excruciating I couldn’t get through the video.
matt-attack··on Curl native support for –aws-sigv4 (2023)
I’m not that familiar with AWS innards. Can you explain how this one flag can access any API?
matt-attack··on Put the DVD logo in the corner (2023)
Curious to know if you’re under the presumption that TVs are square? Or are you imagining that the logo doesn’t move at 45 degrees?

Both seem obviously false but I’m struggling to think how someone could otherwise have come to your conclusion.
