matsemann··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
> For who though?

For math, the value of proving a theorem is often not proving the theorem (which most people already believe correctly to be true or false), but the path taken there, the new math invented, and how it can be applied to other problems. The end result is therefore almost inconsequential in moving math forwards.

matsemann··on Plan mode is dead
My experience with that is not very good. It gets so hung up in its initial decision. Like, it won't make changes because they're "breaking", for something never even committed. Or it will litter the code base with defensive code and comments about the path not chosen.
matsemann··on How to keep enjoying programming in a world of LLMs
I don't mind using an LLM while programming. At least the way I use it, I still feel like my experience, knowledge and taste is being utilized to make it better than if I were to vibe it.

What has made me enjoy it less, is having to deal with colleagues' use of it. Sorry to say, but I don't enjoy talking to meat proxies, or getting huge PRs that solve the wrong problem. It's like half the people have turned off their brain. We produce faster, but we don't produce the right stuff.

matsemann··on Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges
I'm biased working for an online grocer, but isn't the problem really that you are in a store making the decision instead of in your kitchen at home? Half the goods I buy anyways aren't in a fridge, so a smart fridge only solves parts of the problem.
matsemann··on Meta VR Glasses
If you already had a long standing fb profile you were probably good. But if you had to make a new one just for Quest, you could sometimes end up having to go through all kinds of hoops to prove you weren't making a spam bot account. Or if you tried to access a long forgotten account.
matsemann··on AI and the Destruction of the Creative Commons
Sorry, but this seems like just moving the goalpost.
matsemann··on AI and the Destruction of the Creative Commons
My point is you can't. No one is logged in and active unless it's a popular night.
matsemann··on AI and the Destruction of the Creative Commons
I'd wager 99 % of the OSS the world runs on is people that never have cared about credit or building a portfolio.

What they do want, however, is to not have to spend time on the thousands of AI generated pull requests and bug reports.

matsemann··on AI and the Destruction of the Creative Commons
Yeah, small city I grew up in there are no longer taxis. Used to be a semi full time position for 1-2 people, so any night you could get a taxi if you arrived by train or needed to get home from somewhere. Most nights operated of course on a loss, but made up for on the volume during some weekends or periods of the year (like winter holidays). But then when the taxi monopoly broke down, more people started to compete on the lucrative weekends. Good in the start, quicker to get a cab and price decreased. But then the original cab drivers couldn't sustain the new lower income, and got other jobs. No one wants to be up night to Wednesday for perhaps two trips, so now it's impossible to hail a cab most days.

And the relevance here is how this disruption played out. Will the same happen to open source? See it already for instance in how AI makes some maintainers burn out. Where will it lead?

matsemann··on AI and the Destruction of the Creative Commons
Exactly not this. Way to straw man all counter arguments before they even got any.
matsemann··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
To me it's the opposite. If the poster is something typed up in Word, I know the Farmer's Market is the real deal. If it's AI generated, I immediately get Temu dropshipping vibes.
matsemann··on Xcode 27.1 Beta Release Notes
But you're kinda proving my point. I don't disagree with having pride in your work and obsessing over details, but as you say, it won't matter in the end. And so, many will probably find themselves disappointed with the Duo, as there is little reason for developers to care. And then many won't.
matsemann··on Xcode 27.1 Beta Release Notes
No, it's based on pragmatism. Every feature is a cost/benefit tradeoff. You didn't answer the question: would it be worth it?
matsemann··on Xcode 27.1 Beta Release Notes
Thanks for the backhanded compliment, very mature..

I'm not an iOS developer, never made an app at all, I asked because I'm curious. What is it really to gain?

matsemann··on Xcode 27.1 Beta Release Notes
But will you gain anything by building for it? Will you see noticeably more users or people choosing another alternative because you didn't specifically building the app for Duo? At least if it doesn't outright break.
matsemann··on A heap overflow and SSO misconfiguration to compromise OpenAI internal repos
But if you don't support HEIF you get the Apple crowd breathing down your neck. The fact they made it basically default when sooo many things don't support receiving it is bonkers, but they'll bludgeon it through.
matsemann··on macOS 27 Golden Gate – Review
I've never had so much stuff break than with the macOS updates. I can get some of it, like drivers or programs hooking onto OS features that change. But so much "normal" software just breaks. Or can't even run without the dev recompiling for the new ui kit version or something. While on Windows I can run any random old tool not touched in two decades and it'll work.

I dread updating Macs.

matsemann··on Tell the speakers that you liked their talks
I used to have a colleague that would always nod to things in meetings, and make a humming/agreeing ("mhm") sound once in a while. I used to find it a bit weird, he probably didn't even notice it himself. But then I held a presentation once with him in the room, and started to love that little quirk of his. Could always just find him in the crowd and feel some encouragement.

As for telling speakers you liked their talks, another higher up in the company used to send me a DM and thank/praise me. My guess is he did it for everyone, but still it felt very validating as a junior, both to be seen and also encouraged. It's a bit like with kids, tell them they're good at something (even if not), and they'll try to be, heh.

But I've tried to take that with me, and send DMs to people, where it maybe normally wouldn't feel natural for me. But after a while it does. And it can be even for small things, like "I like how well prepared you were for that meeting, any questions they had you could answer". You'll bet that person is well prepared the next time we have a meeting as well.

matsemann··on Let's make quality the norm again
I do think our consumer rights in Norway help a bit on this (the article is a page to the consumer agency here). We have 5 years mandated "warranty" on almost all purchases. Which means selling a cheap blender that breaks after two years, you as a shop/producer/importer have to eat the cost to provide a new one if it happens. Which means that the chance of something breaking becomes priced in, so you can't really get away with selling something flimsy a bit cheaper to trick the consumer.
matsemann··on Show HN: 1080p is 920px tall – 1k real browser viewports
I've never found it that useful to see a list of numbers of sizes. I can't visualize them quickly, and in the end the exact pixels doesn't matter, it's the various ratios.

I made this ~15 years ago. Took all the common phone resolutions at the time and scaled so that they all were similarly tall. Then it gave me a good grasp on what aspects my game needed to support. https://imgur.com/a/JT5JyyH

matsemann··on Everyone should slow down AI development except for me
Well, that's almost a tautology. People claim Y2K or ozone was a panic and that nothing happened. But nothing happened exactly because the force behind the panic also fixed the issues.
matsemann··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
I don't need an audit log for my audio. What I do need however is to remove something so it doesn't influence the algorithm. I may not remember every time I play music for a kid to turn on the right mode.
matsemann··on What algorithm did Windows XP use to choose your initial user picture?
This feels very analogous to the three doors puzzle.
matsemann··on List of references on Sony websites to players "owning" their digital games
In my country, many laws state that the consumer (or "weak" part) can not sign away their rights, any contract with stipulations regarding that would void that clause. Feel like that should be the norm. Shouldn't be able to lose your consumer rights just by pressing a button, then the rights are worthless if everyone just have a huge TOS / EULA for any service covering their asses.
matsemann··on Stockfish 19
I've never studied any openings and still have loads of fun with chess. I think you have to be IM level or something to not immediately go out theory.

It can be a bit fun, sometime, to play someone that has studied an opening at my level, but since they aren't that deep into it, they only know the moves for some variations. So me, not knowing the opening, do something from the left-field, and they don't really know how to punish it anyway. Remember one time someone got a bit grumpy, heh.

matsemann··on Stockfish 19
You just try it yourself and go down the different lines. "Okay, Stockfish suggests this, but I wanted to do that, let's try my idea, oh, I didn't think of that response to my move". Etc., play along some lines, think about them. Sometimes it's obvious, other times it just sets up something far in the future you must be a grandmaster to see the subtlety of.
matsemann··on AirPods 5
Yeah, I get your point, I jusr don't think the solution is to police pedestrians. I'll stop wearing noise canceling headphones in the city the day cars stop being loud, and when the drivers of those cars drive with no music and their windows rolled down ;)
matsemann··on AirPods 5
Connection type means the sound quality drops significantly when headphones are used for speaking, though. Maybe don't notice as much in normal calls / only speech, but using Bluetooth when gaming and some kinda of voice chat makes all game music / ambient sounds sound so crunchy.
matsemann··on AirPods 5
People drive cars every day, isolated in a box with windows rolled up, playing music or radio, not being able to hear what's going on around them. So I don't buy the safety argument of noise canceling headphones being dangerous.
matsemann··on iPhone Duo
Disagree on it looking great. It doesn't look like an Apple product. It looks geeky and clumsy. Which I personally don't mind, but absolutely not the sleek one is used to from Apple.
