matmann2001··on The ‘Most Secure’ U.S. Election Was Not Without Problems
Thank you for putting into words what I've been feeling. Uncomfortable is great way to describe the lingering questions I have.

- What was the extent of Russian interference in 2016? Was it just media manipulation or did it go further to also include voter fraud and hacking of election systems?

- How much did that interference contribute to Trump's win in 2016?

- If the prevailing notion for the last 4 years was that nothing was done to fortify election integrity, shouldn't we have expected to see similar or greater interference from Russia in 2020?

- If there was Russian voter interference in 2016, and nothing was done to fix that in the last 4 years, how much trust should be put in CISA's statement of no evidence of manipulation?

- Is this just a perfect example of the uncertainty about our democracy that Russia intended to instill all along?

matmann2001··on My California ballot, 2020 (by Scott Alexander)
Ahh perhaps I am mistaken and only remembered the Quick Reference. Do you know if midterm election guides also include all of that?
matmann2001··on My California ballot, 2020 (by Scott Alexander)
It's been fairly typical the past few elections at least. Not sure how much we're paying for the voter guides, but I do know they are effectively useless. You get like a paragraph summary of the measure that offers no nuance, and maybe a sentence or two of hyper-biased For and Against statements.

Considering how loaded these ballot measures can be, the guide almost always falls short of providing sufficient information to make an informed, educated vote.

matmann2001··on How does a gas pump know to shut itself off? (1981)
My car is also a chevy.
matmann2001··on How does a gas pump know to shut itself off? (1981)
I bought a car ~7 years ago in Illinois and transported it to California. Pumps in IL worked fine with the car, but upon arriving in CA, I found that gas pumps will prematurely shut off, almost immediately upon pumping, regardless of how empty the tank is. In order to prevent the premature shutoff, I have to lift the pump hose at about a 45 degree while pumping.

Any idea what's going wrong here? Is it my car or the pump? Is there a difference between the pumps in IL vs CA?

matmann2001··on United States Obtains Final Judgement and Permanent Injunction Against Snowden
I think that is explained toward the end:

> This lawsuit is separate from the criminal charges brought against Snowden for his alleged disclosures of classified information. This lawsuit is a civil action, and based solely on Snowden’s failure to comply with the clear pre-publication review obligations included in his signed non-disclosure agreements.

matmann2001··on How I think I want to drop modern Python packages into a single program
This is a solved problem and the solution is virtualenv. Learning how to use venv's would have likely taken less time than the tinkering described in this post. If you're going to regularly develop with python and use 2nd/3rd party code, it's worth knowing.

matmann2001··on Uber and Lyft shutdown in California averted as judge grants emergency stay
Where did I mention the banning of a form of work?
matmann2001··on Rideshare operations are being suspended in California
More than plausible. The fact that Uber does not generate profit means they are effectively subsidizing rides with VC and IPO funds.
matmann2001··on Uber and Lyft shutdown in California averted as judge grants emergency stay
Yes! If the free market results in employers offering shitty choices that take advantage of workers with limited options, the government should step in and attempt to correct the power-imbalance that puts the workers at life- and liberty-threatening disadvantages.

Extrapolating from your logic, indentured servitude would still be allowed to exist.

matmann2001··on Uber and Lyft shutdown in California averted as judge grants emergency stay
I think you're gas lighting us by ignoring the fact that these types of choices aren't fully unconstrained. People aren't assuming this risk because they prefer to, but rather they have limited choices available to them given their resources and background.
matmann2001··on Appeals court grants Uber and Lyft temporary reprieve after threats to shut down
Why is Prop 22 the magic answer for these companies? Have we really reached a point where having mandates in state law is the only way for companies to treat their workers better than the absolute minimum? Call me naive, but it always feels like we're at the finish line in this race to the bottom.
matmann2001··on Rideshare operations are being suspended in California
Playing devil's advocate here, but how do you think they managed to make a more affordable solution? If you think it's entirely due to their technology, I'm afraid you'd be mistaken.
matmann2001··on Rideshare operations are being suspended in California
So, if Prop 22 is the solution to this mess, then it's natural to ask:

1) What do services like Uber/Lyft/Doordash (who are proposing Prop 22) currently offer in terms of benefits?

2) How do current benefits compare to what will be mandated by Prop 22?

3) If there is any difference, why? Is a state law required to treat your contractors better than the bare minimum?

matmann2001··on Modeling a Wealth Tax
What a laughably incomplete model. I don't care whose post this is. It's the epitome of short-sighted.

So the government just takes the money and that's the end of it? Not by a long shot. Every major proponent of a wealth tax in the US has proposed it as a means to fund public programs. Whether that means Medicare for All, Green New Deal style initiatives, tackling affordable housing, support services for the homeless, better child care, and/or increasing the accessibility of higher education, founders and their employees are sure to benefit a great deal. A model that doesn't even attempt to account for those benefits is not useful, and merely serves to shut down the conversation before it can even begin in earnest.

And let's get the government efficiency (i.e. lack thereof) argument out of the way too. Sure, a good portion of these funds will be "wasted" on bureaucracy and plain old corruption. If that's your main argument, try voting and participating in local government instead of being a NIMBY toward progressive ideas. And if you think for a second that these taxed funds would go farther if they remain in the hands of the wealthy, well, look around you and notice all of the socioeconomic issues that go unaddressed every single day.

Of course, the short-term thinking isn't surprising. Today's leaders heavily prioritize short-term benefit over long-term prosperity. It's why our stock market is so disconnected from the actual economy. It's why the nation can't figure out how to escape this pandemic of stupidity. It's why we can't get any real commitment to address climate change which has already reached a level that threatens our very existence as a species.

As a nation, and perhaps a planet, we need to start thinking beyond just the next office term or the next fiscal year, and more toward the scale of the next generation. Otherwise, we aren't going to have one.

matmann2001··on I’m Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
This might be a strange question, but I'll give it a shot anyway.

Amongst myself and a number of friends (whom work in tech), we've observed a similar difficulty with meeting and employing lawyers for either personal- or business-related issues. We all seemed to arrive at the same conclusion that we don't know any lawyers personally, they don't seem to be part of our extended circle of acquaintances, and are difficult to find locally and evaluate their ability to handle whatever the need is, without shelling out a decent sum of money upfront.

Maybe this is unique to us, or maybe others here have experienced this too (please chime in). I suppose what I'm asking is what are good ways to find local lawyers with the right specialization (most of the half-decent recommendation services I've seen online are paid services). Also, where are y'all hiding? Can I buy one of you a beer?

matmann2001··on Reasonably priced color e-ink display
I wonder what the refresh time on this looks like. I recently finished a project with a red/black/white e-ink display, and the docs for it listed a worst-case refresh time of up to 14 seconds.

Also had a Toq. Probably one of my favorite smartwatches, and would have loved to see it live long enough to run Android Wear. Unfortunately, Qualcomm isn't a product company and the Toq was essentially a proof of concept for both Mirasol and their new (at the time) line of smartwatch-focused Snapdragon chips. They managed to convince most of the major real smartwatch OEMs to use Snapdragon but the Mirasol just never got off the ground. Apparently manufacturing was very difficult, as you might imagine, and they were hitting limitations on pushing the color depth.
