Everything was online and centrally controlled. Jira, Confluence, AWS, Github, MediaWiki (some of these were self-hosted), and google apps.
I have always preferred centralised computing, you can visually see the headaches and frustration drop for IT support technicians when they don't have to deal with minor printer, file, or collaboration issues. The kind of issues that were created by the "PC" in the business environment.
I don't own a tablet yet. But procreate, Paper, and the various stylus available are now very tempting.
I am just as happy now to watch the ipad market undertake the design market, as OS9 and NT did against IRIX. Watch us do more with more accessible consumer tech.
Confluence? Twiki? Or equal such centralised documentaiotn and revision service, be it SaaS or locally hosted, Yes.
Perhaps if somebody could offer {DB2|Oracle|Informix|Sybase} As A Service, like what many providers do with PostgreSQL and MySQL, it would be a different story for startups.
My profression involves moving MSSQL and Sybase databases to MySQL and MariaDB, then I go and read some of the features from the article in Oracle and DB2 documentation and think to myself "I ain't helping fucking nobody", the higher-ups in enterprise and startups usually only see upfront costs, not long term benefits.
As per your first question; they are getting there. PostgreSQL now has a built-in function for managing materialised views, in MySQL/MariaDB that is still hand-rolled.
MariaDB however does have Virtual Columns and Dynamic columns (to tackle nested tables, as per the article).
Look to MariaDB for the MySQL developments, as Oracle are bringing very little to the table in terms of matching MySQL features to Oracle (not surprising). But they are resolving important security, and infrastructure issues and improving InnoDB heavily.
Also PostgreSQL does have HSTORE, for storing JSON data types, very tasty.
I am very much looking forward to mir.
I am so very very very thankful of publications such as the following listed at Stackoverflow:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1711/what-is-the-single-m...
And that's a great shame, that you took a potential developers place in that order queue (the Oculus Rift suffers this same issue), a developer that is having to wait until retail release to get their hands on a platform they want to publish for.
Kickstarter != Amazon.
An audience of consumers, and bedroom-youtube-reviewers with a short attention span are passing (generally) negative judgement on device that was not meant for them.
I am hoping that if OpenGL becomes the most sensible choice, something else will grow out of it. Or if the reigns were handed over to FSF.
I don't think it's a very good comparision, but javascript is doing great out there in the wild. As is Linux, even with so many chefs.
There was a post here a few weeks ago (some dude dug up some old content of a 3D mesh of a cow in a Java viewer). And the old OpenGL and Java code "just worked".
"... and in their death throes, they gave onto us, technologies to last more than 2 years at a time. Sights and wonders never before seen only told, far outreaching the merciless grasp of the Holder of Shares."
RIP - SGI Vpro.
+1 for environment +1 for Capitalism
EDIT: last +1 for education, and employment. No need to get a new fancy computer to do your homework or write a CV.
I tried ubuntu 12.04, and 12.10 on a 2011 macbook air 4,2. I followed the information here, some of the tweaks weren't needed on 12.10:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookAir4-2
But the fans were spinning almost constantly. This was with just firefox and vim usage.
OS X seems to do a better job of running Apple hardware at a sensible temperature.
They are also working on a new table discovery engine, which will bring Transactional DDL to MariaDB, this to me makes MariaDB far more superior to MySQL. They are innovating, and they are open about it. https://mariadb.atlassian.net/browse/MDEV-3808
Oracle have only innovated on the niggles of Mysql, like the unencrypted ~/.my.cnf files to appease their "Enterprise" customers.
Heh, sorry couldn't resist. We all know that's totally unrealistic. What I really want is a changeable battery, whoops there I go again!
umm NSFW, if you work at a school.
They are some big boots to fill. I'm just some DBA in London.
