mateuszf··on Cryptocurrencies – An Assessment by Reserve Bank of India
> Ultimately Bitcoin is still a solution looking for a problem. Banks aren't the problem because they happen to work quite well already.

One thing is sure - there are people who don't agree with that.

For example: people whose money was confiscated during https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012%E2%80%932013_Cypriot_fina...

> it's a regulatory body that makes decisions about currency supply

Isn't that what Bitcoin is about? Getting rid of these often political decisions?

mateuszf··on Android 13 virtualization lets Pixel 6 run Windows 11, Linux distributions
You're probably right, but the fact that underlying technology will be present may be used by someone to implement it.

Like in the case of the Shelter app.

Yes, please. I'd love to separate Facebook, Google, Amazon, etc. apps into separate domains. As I'm doing with web apps via Firefox containers.
mateuszf··on The Crypto Backlash Is Booming
Not much, as ilustrated by recent China ban. The hashrate moved to various places, now it's more distributed than ever.
mateuszf··on Less Than 10% of Firefox Users on Linux Are Running Wayland
The X11 support in Java wasn't so good either AFAIR. Remember having problems with AWT/Swing apps in tiling window managers in the past.

Also, there is some ongoing work on Wayland in Java - https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Wakefiel...

mateuszf··on Less Than 10% of Firefox Users on Linux Are Running Wayland
By the way, assuming I'm running Wayland - anyone maybe knows a way for me to check if any of the apps I have/run are using X11?
mateuszf··on Less Than 10% of Firefox Users on Linux Are Running Wayland
It's also an incentive for the apps to use Wayland which is a good thing.
mateuszf··on The Crypto Backlash Is Booming
Another use case would be protection from inflation - if you're in a country which prints money carelessly or for political reasons.

Of course you could say that Bitcoin is worthless and not proved as store of value, but that's not for me or you to decide, it's what's decided by the market.

mateuszf··on The Crypto Backlash Is Booming
Yeah, I agree with you about the Ethereum part.
mateuszf··on Less Than 10% of Firefox Users on Linux Are Running Wayland
I'm not sure what do the number mean.

Percentage of users running Firefox using Wayland WM/DE or percentage of users running Firefox with enabled Wayland support?

These numbers in theory could be dramatically different, as Firefox with enabled Wayland is not a default yet.

mateuszf··on Less Than 10% of Firefox Users on Linux Are Running Wayland
Using Gnome and Firefox with Wayland on NixOS as well. No issues whatsover.
mateuszf··on The Crypto Backlash Is Booming
Example: Wikileaks being funded using Bitcoin when PayPal, Visa and other payment companies blocked transactions
mateuszf··on Ask HN: Any piece of hardware that was more of game changer than you expected?
> It's tough to go running in normal headphones because you can't hear danger

There are some noise reducing headphones (like Airpods Pro or Sony Wh-1000xm*) which have ambient mode - mixing music with external noises which also work great for that scenario.

mateuszf··on Bitcoin's fungibility graveyard
> It will soon be added to the decentralized exchange Thorchain.

I've heard about XHV and Monero being added to Thorchain a year ago, described as coming soon. Somehow it feels more like marketing than a real thing.

mateuszf··on Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes
It was his choice to sign that deal though.
mateuszf··on In second largest DeFi hack, Blockchain Bridge loses $320M Ether
That's Ethereum though, not Bitcoin.
mateuszf··on Charm – Tools to make the command line glamorous
Alacritty has a similar thing built-in, without tmux if someone doesn't like it for some reason.
mateuszf··on 1Password Has Raised $620M
> You can never trust cloud-hosted password managers..

If you examine the source code of a client (for example bitwarden) and make sure that it's not leaking your master password and then compile the soft yourself and not update - you'll be pretty safe.

This will make it similarly secure as e.g. keepass, because even for keepass you should be sure the source is legit

mateuszf··on It’s not still the early days of blockchain
You can find lot of stories of them blocking your account without explanation and taking the money.
mateuszf··on Mullvad: Diskless infrastructure using stboot in beta
I think that if enough exit nodes would be owned by let's say government agencies they would be able to correlate requested domains with actual requester IP.
mateuszf··on GoboLinux Is a Linux Distro Unlike Any Other
Sounds a bit like NixOS.
mateuszf··on Ad-hoc ClojureScript scripting of Mac applications
Fair enough :)

mateuszf··on Ask HN: How did my LastPass master password get leaked?
Bitwarden is fantastic
mateuszf··on Log4Shell Log4j vulnerability (CVE-2021-44228) – cheat-sheet reference guide
Yeah - for example to determine if log4j is used in a maven project one would have to run "mvn dependency:tree | grep log4j".

Which I did today for our 60 microservices.

And also for projects deployed as war files - container server libraries also have to be checked.

mateuszf··on Why Bitcoin is not a socialist’s ally (2020)
> Who decided the block size? Who decided to adopt SegWit?

Users running bitcoin nodes doing transactions validations, not miners creating transactions.

mateuszf··on Google 20% time volunteers have been rewriting the ITA Matrix flight search app
> This also hilariously ended up in having to plan OKR style achievements for your spare time project.

Indeed that's really funny in an absurd way.

mateuszf··on Will Nix Overtake Docker?
I guess it's reproducible - creates a system that has exactly the same versions of all programs and all libraries.
mateuszf··on SugarCoat: Private browsing without breaking the web
> Serious question ... how do you propose these companies that provide these services make money?

How about micropayments per article / video / whatever? e.g. using bitcoin lightning network.

I'd choose that over ads without doubt.
