mateus1··on Markov Keyboard: keyboard layout that changes by Markov frequency
Very interesting, I wonder if you could incorporate text prediction so that you can write a sentence in just one key (aside from space).
mateus1··on To Log into WordPress, You Now Have to Agree Pineapple on Pizza Is Good
There’s an Automattic footer. I’m baffled at the stupidity.
mateus1··on School smartphone ban results in better sleep and improved mood: study
The idea that parent control is censorship is very funny. Kid’s brains shouldn’t be exposed to addictive and exploitative content.
mateus1··on Alzheimer's study shows ketone bodies help clear misfolded proteins
I tried doing a low carb diet and it wrecked my mental health. Worsened my depression and mood swings. It just does not jive with some psychiatric conditions.
mateus1··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
Of course it is. It’s just isn’t news when it’s done for profit at a massive scale by a megacorp millionaire CEO
mateus1··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
Are you sensitized by the death of thousands of people due to automated coverage deny systems he put in place?
mateus1··on McKinsey unit will pay $123M to settle claims it bribed South African officials
They weren’t just involved. They were the brains behind some evil moves such as giving bonuses per opioid OD rates and bribing the best pill pushing doctors with bribes disguised as speaker fees.
mateus1··on The end of ChromeOS is a new dawn for cheap Android laptops
I don’t think lack of hardware expertise is the problem. The biggest issue is that Google leadership does not seem capable of thinking long or even medium term. Waymo, Glass, and the myriad of discontinued software products are a proof of it.
mateus1··on Brazil leads new international effort against climate lies at the G20 summit
I don’t think it’s fair to downplay this since there are very few countries in it. We should shame countries outside these initiatives
mateus1··on 20 years of Google Scholar
Any alternatives?
mateus1··on Show HN: Proxmox VE Helper Scripts
Heartwarming to see the community response here, long live tteck.

I’ve just built my first homelab and have favored OpenMediaVault which seems better suited for my use.

mateus1··on DeepMind debuts watermarks for AI-generated text
This is not a “good deed for the public” done by Google, this is just a self serving tool to enforce their algorithms and digital property. There is nothing “bad” here for the public but it’s certainly not good either.
mateus1··on DeepMind debuts watermarks for AI-generated text
Google is branding this in a positive light but this is just AI text DRM.
mateus1··on Colorado scrambles to change voting-system passwords after accidental leak
It does not make sense to paint paper ballots as something that is inherently better.. Paper ballots have many potential vector attacks many of which are stupidly easy or even unintentional (e.g. hanging chads)
mateus1··on Dropbox announces 20% global workforce reduction
That’s such a naive take. For the past 5 years at least these layoffs are not about particular projects being discontinued or even improving the bottom line. This is about how people are expendable and their priority is investors.
mateus1··on Gross Apple Marketing
The most annoying part when I worked in marketing was explaining to people that it’s not about the their opinion, it’s about profit. One person’s take is worthless.
mateus1··on In SSRI withdrawal, brain zaps go from overlooked symptom to center stage (2023)
What volume did you do? I took about the same amount as the OP and had it too.
mateus1··on In SSRI withdrawal, brain zaps go from overlooked symptom to center stage (2023)
Oh wow, I had a very similar experience with brain zaps after a slightly lower dose over 4 days. They were mostly non intrusive and around the nape of my head. I hope they’re not a signal of damage.
mateus1··on Ultrasonic investigations in shopping centres
I wonder how much of this sound pollution disproportionately affects autistic people. We need to make our soundscapes accessible.
mateus1··on Google avoids jury trial by sending $2.3M check to US Government
Corporations are people and they can also bribe the government. I can’t see this going badly!
mateus1··on A humble Indian fabric became a symbol of luxury in 1960s America
Beer, water, urine. I drink them all, I can’t tell the difference.
mateus1··on BYD aims to replace Routemaster with 400-mile EV London bus
You have changed your ideals because you’ve seen examples of one specific thing on both sides of the spectrum?
mateus1··on BYD aims to replace Routemaster with 400-mile EV London bus
Holy, that’s insane praise. Thanks for sharing.
mateus1··on BYD aims to replace Routemaster with 400-mile EV London bus
That’s just as useful as telling someone who wants to learn about Tesla to look up “Apartheid”.
mateus1··on BYD aims to replace Routemaster with 400-mile EV London bus
Does anyone have a good article/vid behind the BYD story? I’ve only heard of them this year and now they’re everywhere (outselling many makers here in Brazil too).
mateus1··on Boeing Passenger Jet Nearly Crashes Because of Known Software Bug
We should call this “Suicide by maximizing shareholder value”
mateus1··on I am sick of LeetCode-style interviews
This reads very similarly to consulting case interview questions. 1) It requires a lot of free time beforehand to study the frameworks so it filters intent but also removes those who need to work and 2) it seems objective on the surface but you can essentially pick winners by choosing difficulty and nudging along.
mateus1··on Fusion tech finds geothermal energy application
That’s precisely the point. We’re using the science budget for bombs instead of helping people.
mateus1··on Fusion tech finds geothermal energy application
I mean, we’d probably be living like the Jetsons if the US routed 20% of the defense spend to STEM.
mateus1··on An accident of lighting uncovers origins of the astrolabe
Yes, I was confused while reading the article. Cool story nonetheless
