matesz··on Social media promised connection, but it has delivered exhaustion
Unfortunately it's an incredible tool, especially for industries which pray on people's insecurities like beauty - botox, fillers etc. This person I know puts instagram story and gets instantly booked for all free slots she has for the entire week.

She talked about some people from her industry doing billboard ads and laughed how inefficient they must be, knowing that people are so hooked on "insta".

matesz··on Social media promised connection, but it has delivered exhaustion
I believe it takes maturity and wisdom to unhook from social media - facebook, youtube, linkedin, instagram etc. Especially reactive use, not the one which comes from internal pause / response.

I tried to unhook pretty much for the past 15 years as I sensed that it basically doesn't serve me. If I would summarize the one primary cause for my inability to do it is the following - the belief that consuming content online is better for my own being than learning to manage my monkey mind.

I mean any content - from scrolling dumb instagram and facebook feeds to factory making process videos on youtube and streamers playing online games, political debates etc.

The problem is not consuming content on social media, but doing it reactively, excessively.

What helps with unhooking is basically wisdom and experience because how to do it when pretty much everybody is doing it?

Realizing that entire social media world is just incredibly fucking corrupt. Like omg corrupt. It's the epitome of corruption, starting with CEOs themselves.

Last week I've had situation where the person I knew who has professional instagram profile with +10k and runs business there just went fucking nuts. Instead of focusing on working on herself she decided to double down on her narcisism and went mental. Episode, however this is where it leads.

I am just happy that I can see it better and better and step into the right direction - away from social media.

PS. I removed X account few months ago, oh my, what a relief!

matesz··on iPhone Air
https://www.apple.com/iphone/compare/?modelList=iphone-17,ip...

Interesting. So apart of camera and battery life, the upgrade from iphone 12 mini to iphone 17 is unimpressive and for someone like me who likes smaller sized phones and don't care about refresh rate (my goal is to decrease my screen time rather then increase), its actually a downgrade.

matesz··on Apple Debuts iPhone 17
I’m still using iPhone 12 mini running iOS 26 beta and it’s good enough. OS is definitely not polished, some of the design choices don’t even make sense but in general I believe it’s the right direction - spatial + maxing out visual looks.

Being able to turn Liquid Glass off to sth like flat design would be nice but this probably won’t happen.

Now when it comes to the event itself, it felt so cartoonish.

matesz··on Why Romania excels in international Olympiads
And then there is China - remember that IOI for instance accepts 4 people from each country.

After all it all comes down to individuals. In Poland, there is famous informatics high school teacher who is credited for producing most IOI/IOM medalist per high school pupil in the world I believe.

They have special training program there. Another thing is to actually find geniuses, obviously. And if you don’t believe in geniuses, meet Jake - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OR36jrx_L44

For example, Jakub Pachocki (director of engineering of OpenAI) who graduated this high school, actually was on the verge of getting F from maths in his previous high school, because of problems being to easy I believe. Then they made the transfer where he could finally thrive. Interestingly, he wanted to do phd in 2 years in University of Warsaw, but people there didn’t want to allow it just because so they lost him - he went to do his PhD at Carnegie Mellon.

To summarise, from what I understand formula would be something like genius + great, inspiring and allowing teacher(s) + special personalised teaching programs + supportive environment.

Also don’t assume that these outliers are testament to the level of education of general population.

matesz··on Anthropic Changes Training Data Policy from Opt-In to Opt-Out
From May 2025 version: "We WILL NOT USE your Inputs or Outputs to train our models, unless: (1) your conversations are flagged for Trust & Safety review... or (2) you've explicitly reported the materials to us... or (3) you've OTHERWISE EXPLICITLY OPTED IN to the use of your Inputs and Outputs for training purposes."

From September 2025 version (effective on Sep 28): "We MAY USE your Inputs and Outputs to train our models and improve our Services, UNLESS YOU OPT OUT through your account settings. EVEN IF you opt-out, we will use Inputs and Outputs for model improvement when: (1) your conversations are flagged for safety review to improve our ability to detect harmful content, enforce our policies, or advance AI safety research, or (2) you've explicitly reported the materials to us (for example via our feedback mechanisms)."

matesz··on Claude vs. Gemini: Testing on 1M Tokens of Context
Oh my... I didn't know about Gemini Studio and didn't expect the possibility of it existing. Thanks for correcting!
matesz··on Claude vs. Gemini: Testing on 1M Tokens of Context
Geminis free tier allows maybe 5 messages on average, for 2.5 pro at least and this is not usable.

I’m using Claude Pro for daily driver and Gemini / ChatGPT free tiers.

matesz··on How Turso made connections to SQLite databases 575x faster
Is this the thing which makes running database workloads on FaaS infrastructure even more possible? Is anybody using this approach in production actually?

Because to me this seems like an amazing idea and massive potential in savings on compute and memory.

From what I understand, we already can create an unikernel image with some server app and SQLite database file. Then we could put this image on a few vm with firecracker and proxy agent installed via some orchestrator which would allow these images to be run on demand in HA mode in sub 100ms [1].

Note sure how these statistics change when the image grows to 100s MBs and how DB replication would look like, but this would be really nice.

matesz··on Bootstrapping a side project into a profitable seven-figure business
I really like the ability to skip setup and go for sandbox presets with premium features paywalled - this seems like an obvious choice.

Most SaaS products like these require you to go through their complicated setup just to see what they are about.

Also, highly recommend "The Mom Test" by Rob Fitzpatrick - https://www.momtestbook.com.

It is so revealing, especially to people like me who naturally tend to think that just automation of processes is going to make something people want. This book is, by far, the best resource I found to get out of that mindset and learn how to get real feedback.

Anybody knows how they can guarantee uniqueness of searched snipped within code block or is it even possible?

matesz··on Redis is open source again
Wait, AGPL is a good license for enterprise, they don’t need to buy unless they want to modify source without releasing, am I wrong about this?

Edit: Doubled checked with gpt, no cases of “infection” yet, there has also been many talks about this license being very good

matesz··on Wealthy Americans fuel half of U.S. economy consumer spending
For anybody still cofused about taxation and what are solutions, please check Gary Economics YouTube channel. He is ex trader, few years rated best at Citibank, and is making very easy to understand educational videos on what wealth inequality is and why the rich are getting richer and poor are getting poorer.

Normally I wouldn’t recommend a channel, but this one is such a gem it’s a sin not to recommend it. Watched a lot about economics and taxes before, overwhelming majority of explanations are poor and a frankly a joke.

In my humble opinion these are the absolute best explanatory videos of how things work on the web. The accurate, easy to follow script, the production, voiceover, complexity of topics. This is staggering.

I highly recommend to look through other videos on this channel. I am not affiliated of course, just the biggest fan.

matesz··on Figma disables AI app design tool after it copied Apple's weather app
This!
matesz··on Figma defaults to train AI models on personal data
> That's more about intellectual property than privacy

It is very important point and anybody who is working on something more innovative than few mockups for their next SaaS app is fuming from their ears.

Just to illustrate let's consider a scenario where we have a team of scientists working for a long period of time on a data structure which they have visualised in their Figma project.

Now let's say they forgot to turn the toggle off. In an instant all of their intellectual property earned through years of blood, sweat and tears is integrated into Figma's LLM. Just like that and without any attribution!!!

matesz··on Figma defaults to train AI models on personal data
Your assumption, that I want to give them data to make the feature better is wrong.
matesz··on Figma defaults to train AI models on personal data
For those who signed up for Figma's AI waitlist, you have to turn the toggle off before August 15th. From FAQ:

Figma won’t begin training on content for accounts with the Content training toggle on until August 15, 2024.

matesz··on Figma will use your content to train its AI
Well well well, it didn't take too long to get those slimy defaults in.

> Note: Prior to Config 2024, we had one setting that managed AI features called Figma and FigJam AI features. For any team and organizations who have this setting disabled as of June 26, 2024, Figma will honor the setting and turn off AI feature access and content training by default.

I don't get it. When they will trun on AI features for me will they immediately suck up all my data before I manage to turn those defaults off or will there be any confirmation/popup before I fully onboard with the change. I hope GDPR covers cases like this one.

EDIT: answer is in FAQ "Figma won’t begin training on content for accounts with the Content training toggle on until August 15, 2024."

> What if one model has the exercism solutions in its training data, but the other model doesn't, is the comparison still fair?

I agree that it might not be fair. However, refactoring is a different story imo since as I see it relates to more general capability of the model (description about refactoring tasks are in the link from previous comment).

matesz··on Claude is now available in Europe
So, in general Claude still beats newest GPT-4o model in software development category, right? [1]

Although new GPT is better at small coding excercises (72.9% vs 68.4%), it falls behind in more challenging refactoring tasks (62.9% vs 72.3%).

I used Claude through VPN from Europe, and from the start could see it was much better than GPT-4, in my limited very subjective use cases.

matesz··on GPT-4o
Don't worry. "Her", in its own right, is frightening, but this is because there is no transparency - you actually can't see how it works and you can't personalize it - choose different options.

Once you grasp that, at least this level of fear should go away. Of course, I'm sure there are more levels of fear related to AI :) just don't have enough time to think about it, perhaps good for me.

Copied from OpenTofu's LinkedIn annoucment:

OpenTofu Project was recently made aware of a letter by HashiCorp’s lawyers, alleging that OpenTofu was not respecting the terms of its BSL license governing its Terraform codebase. OpenTofu vehemently disagrees with any suggestion that it misappropriated, mis-sourced, or otherwise misused HashiCorp’s BSL code. Indeed, it seems that HashiCorp may be conflating code that it had previously been open-sourced under the MPL and more recently developed code it published under the BSL. OpenTofu’s maintainers have investigated this matter, and intends to issue a written response providing a more detailed explanation of its position in the coming days.
