matdrewin··on Android KitKat set to crush Apple?
So basically the upper class uses iPhones, and that is bad because...?
matdrewin··on Chaos Computer Club breaks Apple TouchID
The Touch ID is less secure because you can force a person to put their fingerprint to unlock their own phone. Forcing the passcode out of someone can prove more difficult and the phone will wipe itself after 10 tries (if you have that feature enabled).

I could steal your phone and manage to unlock in the process by taking your hand and unlocking the phone before walking away, somewhat more difficult to do with a passcode.

matdrewin··on Chaos Computer Club breaks Apple TouchID
Much more convienient than a passcode with a little less security. I'd still use it unless I was a CIA agent.
matdrewin··on Anxiety: Nothing to Do but Embrace the Dread
I wasn't a normally anxious person before but 2 distinct traumatic events that happened in the last 2 years has now made me super anxious. The weird thing about anxiety is that it's like both sides of your brain are fighting for control of your body.
matdrewin··on Boxee Acquired By Samsung For Around $30M
I wonder where Samsung is going with this...
matdrewin··on Frameworks Round 6
Java still beats it on Windows.
matdrewin··on Why Java is still relevant
Amen.

I'm a bit tired of people just dismissing Java based on its hipness factor.

matdrewin··on The Facebook experiment has failed
I may not be representative of most people but it seems to me like like Facebook usage is going down. I'd say that only 10% of my friends still post stuff on their walls. I would have closed my account a while ago but I can't seem to convince any of my siblings to use any other chat client.
matdrewin··on Some will always say you're wrong
Good point.
matdrewin··on Microsoft Launches Windows QuickStart Kit For Mac Developers
Sold out :(
matdrewin··on Procrastination is Not Laziness
I love how the author puts off starting his experiment till Monday.
matdrewin··on Netflix no longer issuing new API keys
Never build a business that depends on an api.
matdrewin··on Relax. You'll be more productive
First you talk about relaxation as a way of life and then you say that 10 minutes a day is all you need?

Am I missing something?

matdrewin··on Relax. You'll be more productive
Nice in theory but hard to put in practice in the more traditional 9-5 corporate environments.
matdrewin··on I am under surveillance by Canadian agents, my computer has been backdoored
Just curious how you are so certain that the servers were CSIS servers?

Pretty sure you would never be able to trace back a CSIS or CSE ip.

matdrewin··on Hedge fund manager sues Apple for having too much cash
I always wondered what Apple had to gain by being a public company with so much money on hand.

Don't you usually issue shares when you lack the capital to fund projects/research etc?

matdrewin··on Most Popular Programming Languages of 2013
Surprised of the low numbers for PHP and C# and the high numbers for Python.
matdrewin··on A crazier prediction: iPhone Plus is real, and huge
I can't believe Apple is stooping down to copying the Samsung phablets. I think the galaxy note is the stupidest thing around.

Apple should go the iPod nano/Shuffle route with the iPhone. I practically don't use mine anymore now that I have an iPad.

matdrewin··on Major flaw in Java-based Spring Framework allows remote-code execution
Yeah, I guess they are just re-interating that a lot of people are still on 3.0.5 and they might want to look at upgrading.

Here's the original article:

matdrewin··on Major flaw in Java-based Spring Framework allows remote-code execution
Not quite sure Scala is a good language to learn in. Learning curve is higher than other languages.
matdrewin··on Major flaw in Java-based Spring Framework allows remote-code execution
Not sure that showing them security vulnerabilities in the JVM is going to do much good if they are still in the learning phase.
matdrewin··on Major flaw in Java-based Spring Framework allows remote-code execution
Tons of people have learned to program with Java. Might not be as elegant as other languages but the fundamentals are the same.
matdrewin··on Major flaw in Java-based Spring Framework allows remote-code execution
As long as you're not injecting unvalidated request parameters in your JSPs, you will be fine.
matdrewin··on Phil Schiller seems to deny talk of cheap iPhone
Would be sweet if Apple was developing a quality dumb phone a la iPod Nano or Shuffle. I like my phones small and with the iPad, I don't use my iPhone nearly as much as I used to.
matdrewin··on Java was a colossal failure...JavaScript is succeeding because it works
How is Java a failure?
matdrewin··on Deploy to Linode and wait or go direct to AWS?
I think you should go with Linode first and when you hit the upper limit, you can move to EC2 or dedicated servers.

AWS is somewhat expensive and doesn't deliver the same performance as Linode type hosts.

The only advantage to EC2 is the insane flexibility it allows (i.e. dynamically spawn new nodes based on traffic)

To start off, I'd go with Linode or Rackspace. Keep it simple. Worry about scaling later.
