matclayton··on Speaking of the British
As someone who went through CUED, I confirm that there are an awful lot of my friends in investment banking/consulting, however I know of a fair few (myself included) who now do startup's.

For example I do Mixcloud, and I have friends from uni days, who are founders in YC companies such as Heyzap, songkick, rapportive and webmynd. So not all of us turn to the dark side.... infact I would say a surprising number of them are now actively involved in internet startups.

They are phasing out fbml not xfbml.
matclayton··on Django 1.3 released
Congratulations to all the team,
matclayton··on See how many times a URL has been shared on Facebook
Add the domain to facebook.com/insights and then you can download an excel spreadsheet with the daily totals, just sum these to get the total shares/likes for a domain
matclayton··on See how many times a URL has been shared on Facebook
It's a shortcut for http://graph.facebook.com/?id=abc

Looks like fb made opengraph pages first class citizens on their namespace, should be interesting to see what else they get soon,

You can also do http://graph.facebook.com/?ids=http://news.ycombinator.com,h...

To lookup multiple urls at the same time.

matclayton··on IOS 4.3 Nitro JS engine disabled for full screen apps and uiwebview
Does apple actively want native apps to out perform html5? Of course, but enough that would hinder the natural install points, seems a little crazy even for apple...... is this the same on the iPad and iPhone/iPod?
matclayton··on 57 YC startups' Twitter follower growth over time
Congrats. Mixcloud would be coming in @4 although not eligible :D
matclayton··on Nvidia announces CUDA 4.0
If you are interested in GPU coding, checkout www.tidepowerd.com for a .net cross vendor system, also falls back to CPU and they are a startup :)
matclayton··on Tornado 1.2
We are using it in production at www.mixcloud.com to serve any long polled connections
matclayton··on Facebook’s Hacker Cup Called A Failure
Certainly wasn't a simple hackercup. I participated in both rounds so far, the first one was a mess, I tripped off the 6 minute timer reviewing the questions on my iPad in the morning, without even downloading the input files! Maybe I should have read the enourmos set of instructions before, but I did it for the fun, and reading long t&cs isnt my idea of weekend fun.

The next round was even worse, thankfully I spotted pretty quickly no one was solving the starcraft problem, an obvious problem to attract starcraft fans, and there are enough of those in the programming community. So gave that a miss and moved onto the others. Looks like most people got caught out on that problem, which was a real shame. They need to reset this round and start again to be fair, but I'm sure given how upset a lot of competitors were the server load won't be the same next time.

They run windows95/2000 how can that ever be secure :)

p.s my reference is a blue screen of death on one :)

matclayton··on Write your passwords down
This reduces the search space massively though as we now know you only use 0-f as characters, probably brings it closer to being brute forceable for the sites don't accept 40chars! And dont have rate limits.
matclayton··on The Incredible Power of the Amazon EC2 Cluster GPU Instances
If you are looking at writing gpu code checkout http://www.tidepowerd.com/ startup in this area, just released their first beta, a .net gpu library/compiler

edit: gnu->gpu, for a harsh downvote, iPad auto correct :)

matclayton··on New EC2 Instance Type - The Cluster GPU Instance
Looks like the Tidepowerd beta came out with perfect timing, must give this a spin http://www.tidepowerd.com/ compile .net code to gpu.

P.s. Disclaimer, they are friends of mine, the beta is pretty epic!

matclayton··on Google TV Giveaway for Web Developers
Sucks, we are a UK startup doing online radio (www.mixcloud.com) and would love to have a look at integrating, guess we will have to go shopping.

Having run these types of competitions before I know the legals are a nightmare, (and shipping) but I would have thought if anyone google would understand the net is global and found a way.

matclayton··on Ask HN: What's a good, open source, distributed, worker queue?
We use rabbitmq and celery, both awesome projects. And both teams are always on irc if you need help.
matclayton··on Ask HN:Mixcloud API - Peer Review
Turns out our users really like vanity urls :) from an api perspective this makes sense except that it no longer mirrors the main site.
matclayton··on Ask HN:Mixcloud API - Peer Review
Cheers,

We have been around for a while, but tend only to shout in music circles, HN isn't really the right place! We have absolutely no idea what people are going to make on this. We have seen a lot of screen scrapping of our main site, and had loads of emails requesting api access. So figured it was about time we opened it up!

So far have seen guys build last.fm scrobblers, cue timestampers, an android app, and charts, so keen to see what people come up with! We will be setting it in stone for the upcoming Music Hack Day, and sure some interesting stuff will come out of this. http://london.musichackday.org/2010/

Potentially, we debated using internal id's. The issue then becomes we dont have a globally unique id currently, so would need to code/make one. We also fix the url's in our system when they are first set and they become immutable.

XML, easy enough for us to do, so why not support it :) we just run it through a different serializer before outputting it. Seemed like a minor addition to keep the XML users happy...

matclayton··on Ask HN:Mixcloud API - Peer Review
Thanks, for checking it out.

1) Cheers 2) Yeah we know, its a tricky one. We use those urls on the main site, and can't really change those now. The point of the api is to allow any developer to take a url on the site and be able to just swap out the www for api, to get a machine readable version. There are certainly some clashes, the current design decision was it is probably worth it. But we are still gathering responses and this can easily be changed.

3) OAuth1.0 and 1.0a I'd be with you all the way, but become quite a fan of 2.0 its easy to use and to implement, as all the crypto is SSL based.

4) Fair enough, over sight on our point, double checking the meaning and will get it swapped over

matclayton··on Django and SaaS
Scaling, it provides cheap, quick sharding from Day 1. If your db is overloaded, just move some to a second machine. FB used a similar approach with mysql and isolated university databases in the early days, I believe.
matclayton··on Django 1.2 released

matclayton··on Django 1.2 final out on Monday
same here, although I am excited about 1.2 being released as it will mark the end of the bug tracking stage, and the start of the 1.3 feature discussions.
matclayton··on Django 1.2 final out on Monday
We have one of those as well, they arent suitable for any site where you are expecting 100's of queries per minute (unless you dont touch the db :)) the gateway error is probably a lack of django processes being made available to serve requests. This is probably nothing to do with the framework itself and is a hosting issue, try another provider, just my 2cents..
matclayton··on Django 1.2 final out on Monday
Many sites, including us run django and cope with several 100's of requests per minute, without issue, I've never had django become unstable or a single gateway issue. How did you try and host django?
matclayton··on How It Works...The Computer (1971)
Found a copy of this at my Grans house, about a month ago. She had just picked it up at a church book club to learn more about how her (Windows 3.0) computer works :) If only we can get her to upgrade..... alas. She found it very understandable and definitely a good intro to old school computing.
matclayton··on Why you should never pay more than $10 for an HDMI cable (Infographic)
The Reason to buy a really expensive HDMI Cable.

There is only one "good" (dubious) reason to by a really expensive cable, and that is for range. There is a performance differences between the cheap and gold cables, due to the different conductivities. However over short distance this isn't observable, as the receiver will correctly interpret the digital signal even though there is no noise on the line, this is the beauty of digital signals. It is there or it isn't, and with decent ECC on the line, which I'm assuming HDMI has, even with a fair bit of degradation it wont be an issue.

However as you extend the cable the signal with degrade at a different rate depending on the quality of the cable, and eventually you will reach a distance where the digital signal even with ECC is lost, and it will no longer work. With a higher quality cable this range is greater, (we are talking of ranges in the 10's -> 100's of meters), certainly no issue for a normal TV setup, and you would have to question why you even needed such a long cable to start with, move your source/receiver closer to each other.

The only other factor which might show up is the sensitivity and power of the transceivers, and you might find a cable of 100m works on some gear and not on others, but if you do you really are using the wrong tool for the job, go buy a optical repeater :)

I'm guessing on distances here, but you get the idea, I use to work in high frequency data transmission systems, and have no idea of the detailed specs of HDMI but should give you an idea.

matclayton··on Ubuntu 10.04: The Perfect Consumer Operating System?
The other real tangible benefit is $$$ certainly compared to the top end Windows releases, although the snow leopard price is hardly a deal breaker.
matclayton··on Ask HN: MixcloudAds, if we white-label it would you use it?
yeah we only just spotted that one, fixing it now :) Always amazed by the new ways users find to break stuff. But that one we should have caught.
