mat_b··on iOS 26.2 fixes 20 security vulnerabilities, 2 actively exploited
I don't think so. There is always a cutoff for the last major version they recommend for any hardware. Why is the cutoff always after it lags the device severely and not -before- that happens?
mat_b··on Science Communications on YouTube
No mention of PBS Space Time? That show is high quality.

It's unfortunate that Apple has taught me (and I assume others as well) over the last 15 years that the best practice is to never install a major OS update.

It seems clear to me that they use OS updates as a way to eventually slow your device down so the lag becomes so annoying that you want to purchase a new device.

(Edit: And the really obnoxious part is that they force you to receive upgrade prompts every single day and you can't disable it.)

mat_b··on Australia begins enforcing world-first teen social media ban
I suspect that this is going to happen one way or another anyways. You already have to scan your face at the airport here.

Search results are pretty much the same thing though. It's a ranked list of recommended videos. It's just based on your text instead of the video you're watching.
mat_b··on California DMV approves map increase in Waymo driverless operations
Same here. This is the exact reason why I will use Waymo before Uber now. I wanted to support human drivers but they let me down too often. I pick robots now.
mat_b··on Vibe Code Warning – A personal casestudy
Exactly. Break the problem down and interactively plan before generating code.

I'm getting a lot more done than I could have without AI by using this approach with the agent.

mat_b··on I hate screenshots of text
It's not always easy to copy text out of tmux or a VM. Screenshots are easy to create and it's not as hard as you make it sound to type a name into the search bar in the IDE...
mat_b··on A definition of AGI
I don't actually believe that. I think it's entirely possible. What I'm saying is: "I don't know what consciousness is, it makes no sense."

Even if a machine really is conscious, we don't have enough information to ever really know if it is.

mat_b··on A definition of AGI
There's equally no reason to believe that a machine can be conscious. The fact is, we can't say anything about what is required for consciousness because we don't understand what it is or how to measure or define it.
mat_b··on Is Sora the beginning of the end for OpenAI?
> Finally, people don't really care about the truth. They care about things that confirm their world view. Or they dismiss things that are inconvenient for their tribe and focus on things that are inconvenient for other tribes.

People have always been this way though. The tribes are just organized differently in the internet age.

mat_b··on I almost got hacked by a 'job interview'
Agree. People need to chill out. I thought there might be some discussion in the comments about the scam. Unfortunately, no. Complete waste of time to read and much more annoying than the original article.
mat_b··on You’re a slow thinker. Now what?
There are body language cues that show you are thinking. Try looking up (like you're looking into your brain).
mat_b··on AI web crawlers are destroying websites in their never-ending content hunger
Is this data being collected for training sets? That seems problematic. I can't be the only one who's noticed that the web is quickly filling up with AI generated clickbait (which has made using a search engine more difficult).
mat_b··on OpenAI Progress
This was my experience as well. 3.5 was the point where stackoverflow essentially became obsolete in my workflow.
mat_b··on ADHD drug treatment and risk of negative events and outcomes
You gotta start skipping a day sometimes or taking 1/2 on some days. Then you'll accumulate a reserve.
mat_b··on California unemployment rises to 5.5%, worst in the U.S. as tech falters
That's not the whole picture. There are less positions available where you tell someone else what to do and more competition for those positions.
mat_b··on Someone made a 128k line PR to OpenCut
The attitude of "I will do only the fun part. I'll create some barely workable code and expect others to fix it" existed long before AI code generation. Vibe coding is really enabling it to be taken to another level.
mat_b··on ChatGPT agent: bridging research and action
I don't see how this can be true when no one stays at a single job long enough for this to play out. You would simply be training junior employees to become senior employees for someone else.
mat_b··on OpenAI’s Windsurf deal is off, and Windsurf’s CEO is going to Google
I also use vim heavily and I've found that I'm really enjoying Cursor + VS Code Vim extension. The cursor tab completion works very nicely in conjunction with vim navigate mode.
mat_b··on The force-feeding of AI features on an unwilling public
Google Buzz is a better example
mat_b··on Don’t use “click here” as link text (2001)
It's not superfluous noise at all. As a user of the World Wide Web I personally find "click here" to be easy to quickly identify and understand. When I see the underlined "click here" I quickly know exactly what I need to do.
mat_b··on The new skill in AI is not prompting, it's context engineering
AI is not autocomplete. LLMs are autocomplete.
mat_b··on Apple needs a Snow Sequoia
The article is spot on and articulated my feelings exactly. I too became a loyal Apple supporter nearly 20 years ago because "it just works". Sadly, I no longer feel this way. The operating systems on my Macbook, iphone and iPad have consistently gotten worse with each update over the last 5-10 years. Apple is losing the magic on the software front.
