mastermojo··on My stack is HTML+CSS
I am pro github pages. Used it for 5 years, no complaints. [1]

However, I've chosen to also use Jekyll. Github pages explicitly supports/couples with Jekyll [2], so I view the combination as a single dependency as opposed to an extra. For deployment, I push to a git branch and github builds and updates my site in the 10-60 second time frame.

mastermojo··on Superhuman is Sublime Text for Email
Heres an article where Paul Graham in 2012 calls out Gmail for being slow, and stating that he would be willing to pay $50-$1000 a month for a good email experience.

mastermojo··on Superhuman is Sublime Text for Email
Thanks for pointing this out! I've changed them to be more consistently "of X"
mastermojo··on Superhuman is Sublime Text for Email
Hi, author here. Not affiliated with Superhuman. I don’t pay for it either. Maybe I should make that clearer in the post?
mastermojo··on Show HN: After 10 years my side project has hit $8k/mo in revenue
Very cool! Where did the prefix 33 come from?

I like the "86ing" my spam. I wonder if you guys can get 86mail.com Just a fun thought.

mastermojo··on What Working At Stripe Has Been Like
The second-order effects that are described here around the "capture of upside" may be a little exaggerated. Credit cards and Stripe are common payment mechanisms for consumer, prosumer, and self-serve SAAS. I'm not denying there is a lot of money here, but I imagine the majority of B2B SaaS companies by revenue handle payment through annual contracts through checks and wire transfer.

I don't have any data here, but I'm thinking EHR, ERP, office building rent ("a SaaS company plus some glass and concrete") etc. If the service provided is annually worth 100k USD, theres probably human-human interaction which facilitates the exchange of legal documents and money. Think Oracle, SAP, ADP, ServiceNow, Workday etc.

mastermojo··on San Francisco's only cat cafe struggles to stay open
I've been to a couple cat cafes where I've noticed the cats are a little anti-social. Instead of forcing interaction, most of my time is spent observing the cats.

I imagine part of it could be a stressful environment, but my hypothesis is that in the cat-cafe-shelters that allow for adoption, the most personable and social cats end up getting adopted. This is probably the case with regular animal shelters as well.

mastermojo··on Async Python is not faster
Agreed. The blog post even mentions numpy, meinheld and uwsgi as examples of native code performant libraries. The async equivalent is uvloop.
mastermojo··on A Facebook crawler was making 7M requests per day to my stupid website
The author probably cares about either copy-left or the right to tinker. Some people believe it's important and others don't.

Basically any derivative product out of GPL3 code needs to either be open-source/copy-left, or if it uses the code as a library needs to let end users substitute that library for their own version.

mastermojo··on Sublime Merge 2
Thanks, I was wondering if there was a way to change the default.
mastermojo··on Zuckerberg Dismisses Fact-Checking
I like the idea of fact-checking in theory, but in practice the epistemology gets pretty messy.

Donald Trump says "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S manufacturing non-competitive." I think global warming is a fact but it's become so politicized that certain people don't consider it a fact.

I think everything lies on a relative scale of fact to "alternative fact", and it's probably less controversial for private companies to be conservative in their censorship. How do you properly refute someones conspiracy theory anyways?

mastermojo··on Speech to Text on iPhone vs. Pixel
Yes, though keep in mind that Twitter/Hacker News power users are often very privacy conscious. I think people are happy about offline mode regardless of how relatively fast or accurate it is.
mastermojo··on Sublime Merge 2
Downloaded and played with this a little, and I like it so far. Theres a button in SourceTree that I like to change the lines of context 1/3/6/12/25/50/100 etc. I find myself occasionally changing this on a commit level. Is there a quick way to do this in Sublime Merge?

mastermojo··on Things I wish I knew before making a paid extension (2019)
I think an analogy everybody would understand is to think of a regular web app. If you need to add Internet Explorer support to a website that only supports Chrome, does it make sense to fork the website? Almost never. You just inline hardcoded elements and style stuff that only IE browsers understand masquerading as html comments so that other browsers will ignore it. At most, maybe you run/serve a platform specific piece of js/css/html.

Maintaining hundreds of lines of duplicate code can become a logistical mess. Most extensions will see 95-100% shared code between platforms.

mastermojo··on Self-hosting a blog for cheap and lazy devs
+1 Github Pages if you are comfortable on the command line and with markdown

I have some notes on how I played with it a couple years ago. https://www.growthalytics.com/programming/2015/07/19/setting...

mastermojo··on Things I wish I knew before making a paid extension (2019)
Yea, I've seen some some stories around Chrome review problems, most recently around pushbullet. I think it the review outcome depends a little bit on a mixture of reviewer and the permissions required. The more permissions an extension asks for the longer the review process, and unfortunately some false positive flags do happen now and then.
mastermojo··on Things I wish I knew before making a paid extension (2019)
YC W19 Sapling here. We have a freemium browser extension that acts as a grammar checker. Couple thoughts below:

1. Source code. You are allowed to minify source code. Chrome actually recommends minifying source to improve performance. If you require certain permissions you'll have to submit un-minified source for security review.

2. Cloud/subscription based models are the way to go if piracy is an issue, but it doesn't make sense for all products. Licensing hasn't been an issue for Sapling fortunately because the "brains" of our app are in the cloud. I know hacker news is very privacy conscious but our language models are too large to run on a user's end machine right now. Spier Pro seems like a useful web-scraping helper. People who can pirate a chrome extension probably can probably run xpath scripts or a free xpath testing extension themselves so if I were Amy I wouldn't worry _too_ much about piracy.

3. Forked Code. There should be no reason to do it. Firefox and Edge have done a lot of work to support most of the chrome apis. You can handle minor edge cases build time with a variable toggle. Keep the same manifest, even. Browsers are good about ignoring keywords in the manifest they don't recognize. My recommendation is to pretend they are the same platform until you find bugs/issues and hard code around them. Theres a handful but it's very manageable.

What's a (non-programming) C string? Any relation to a G String?
mastermojo··on TikTok has recently traded at valuations of $105-110B on private markets
In my opinion Tiktok is a viable replacement for Instagram, a platform that generates on the order of 10B USD revenue a year. They both have pub/sub models where you can follow topics or celebrities or content creators you care about. Instagram is more photo focused and Tiktok is more video focused. The video first format is arguably higher fidelity/more compelling for content consumers.

Yes, people jump from platform to platform. Instagram will not be king forever, but it will be generating massive amounts of money both on the upswing and the downswing.

mastermojo··on A Third Solution
Why are there so many armchair quarterbacks in this thread spouting dismissive criticism? Paul already acknowledges that "success is far from guaranteed." If this works, great! If it doesn't, I don't think any of us are worse off...

This seems like a heavy application of The Copenhagen Interpretation of Ethics https://blog.jaibot.com/the-copenhagen-interpretation-of-eth...

mastermojo··on A Third Solution
We have Trump claiming things like "we don't have a shortage of tests" and "everybody who needs a test gets a test" and "the US is testing more people than every other country combined". These are daily press conferences broadcast on a national level. Unfortunately, rational information outlets are covering this too.

Trump would rather pretend that we don't need more tests than admit to something the administration could do slightly better. I'm sure if we took the pulse of all Americans there would be a shockingly large number of people who didn't think testing was a big deal.

mastermojo··on Don't write documentation in Markdown
Agreed! Every time I need to do something in markdown I just pull up a cheatsheet and start typing. It's so simple that it fits on a page and I don't even feel like I have to learn it to use it. Markdown works for github README.md. It works in Trello. I have it on my blog that I update once a decade. I don't find the argument to stop using it persuasive at all.
mastermojo··on Magic: The Gathering creator Richard Garfield on 35 years of making games
Looked at your kickstarter. Very cool game! Was your plan to keep this game a single-run production? I know a friend who is in the intersection of {plays magic} and {likes game design}. I might hit you up on your offer once COVID-19 shenanigans calm down a little.

mastermojo··on How can Bitcoin stabilize if it's a Keynesian Beauty Contest?
So the article concludes that Bitcoin can gain stability by being anchored to the price of gold. However isn't gold a "Keynesian Beauty Contest"? That is, gold is valuable because other people believe other people believe it is a store of value.
mastermojo··on Lessons from Coinbase’s Wild Ascent
If you subscribe to the Lean Startup learning where the author spent 2 years building out a product and then realized that nobody wanted to use it the heroku + mongoDB stack makes a lot of sense. It lets a startup to get a product out the door quick and figure out product market fit.

mastermojo··on $250 Trillion in Debt: The World’s Post-Lehman Legacy
It was hard for me to gauge what percentage of total debt that is, so a quick search indicates that by end of year 2018 the US government debt is going to be 21.4 trillion.

Roughly 20% of US government debt is held by itself.
