mastax··on Today is when the Amazon brain drain sent AWS down the spout
"Google leveraging a middleman role to maximize revenue extraction from both sides of a transaction it facilitates" is exactly how I would describe the google ads business.

> About 41% of American workers earning between $300,001 and $500,000—and 40% of those making over $500,000—say they’re living paycheck to paycheck, according to a new report from Goldman Sachs.

https://am.gs.com/en-us/advisors/insights/report-survey/reti...

The only reasonable conclusion is "are you living paycheck to paycheck" is a useless survey question.

That Hotdog theme is stunning but I'm not sure if I mean "it's beautiful" or "it makes my head hurt."
mastax··on The Wi-Fi Revolution (2003)
2.4GHz was used for microwave ovens and thus the spectrum was reserved for their interference. Or rather, the spectrum was made free for low power uses because Serious Business couldn’t be done on those frequencies due to the microwave ovens.
mastax··on How bad can a $2.97 ADC be?
I was planning on using (genuine) ADS1115s for a project but ended up going with an STM32g071 instead. It was cheaper, easier to source at the time (surprisingly) and much more flexible. The newer STM32g/h series ADCs have fewer hardware/software footguns than the old f103 et al.

Nobody wants to store 2^32 1 Byte files and if you do you can make your own file system, frankly.

Last week I threw together a 840TB system to do a data migration. $1500 used 36-bay 4U, 36 refurbished Exos X28 drives, 3x12 RAIDz2. $15000 all in.

mastax··on io_uring is faster than mmap
MAP_HUGETLB can't be used for mmaping files on disk, it can only be used with MAP_ANONYMOUS, with a memfd, or with a file on a hugetlbfs pseudo-filesystem (which is also in memory).
mastax··on GMP damaging Zen 5 CPUs?
Enthusiast-oriented motherboards often default enable Precision Boost Overdrive, causing higher power and temperature limits for longer periods. To run the CPU at “stock” you need to go in and disable that. Their default Load Line Calibration might be aggressive as well.

mastax··on US attack on renewables will lead to power crunch that spikes electricity prices
Well, for one thing, massive methane leaks in Russian gas infrastructure means that Russian gas ii much worse for the environment than any other source of gas.
mastax··on US attack on renewables will lead to power crunch that spikes electricity prices
I think I agree with you broadly, but to make the counter argument:

A big part of the reason why nuclear power isn’t cost-effective nowadays is because those costs have been at least partially internalized. The US federal government has stopped producing cheap nuclear fuel by disassembling nuclear weapons. Nuclear plants need to pay for the cost of storing their spent fuel on site indefinitely. Plant operators need to pay into a federal disaster insurance pool.

mastax··on US attack on renewables will lead to power crunch that spikes electricity prices
Popular in the abstract, unpopular if you ask how much voters are willing to spend or sacrifice for it.

> no attempts made to keep loop areas small

That is not correct, with a charitable reading of the text. Which is not to say it’ll have good EMI characteristics - you never really know until you get it tested.

> Artificially confining ourselves to two layers is exactly the kind of challenge I am wont to be engulfed by. The trick, if you want the board to work well, is to work on only one layer, and keep almost the entirety of the other layer as ground. It is almost always possible to do this, if you're willing to put in enough thought. I rather find that designing circuit boards is a lot like Tetris, and once I'm in the swing of it I can route things for hours on end. It can become a multi-day trance, with dreams of signal integrity and current loop area.

Though on this subject:

> In contrast, said this one PCB designer, a thin track has a higher inductance, so if you make your power supply lines thin, you'll get a free bit of extra filtering.

Inductance in your power supply lines is bad, but I don’t have time to get into it right now.

In the real world approximately zero saving occurs by stuffing cash in the mattress, so “all saving is investment” is a correct simplification.

mastax··on GCC, the GNU Compiler Collection 15.1 released
In theory it's just an extension of IDE tooling. A CLI with a little query language wrapping libclang. In practice I'm sure it's a nightmare just to get 20,000 packages' build systems wrangled such that the right source files get indexed by libclang, and all the endless plumbing for downloading packages and reporting results, and on and on.
