masonicb00m··on Show HN: ipscrub, an IP address anonymizer for Nginx
No. Not using this module. The hashes are based on an ephemeral salt so there is no way to reconstruct the hash using only the IP address.
masonicb00m··on Show HN: ipscrub, an IP address anonymizer for Nginx
What do you mean when you say “detect and handle IPv6/64 subnets”?

I’m not too familiar with IPv6 but would love to improve support for it if the project is deficient somehow.

masonicb00m··on Show HN: ipscrub, an IP address anonymizer for Nginx
Good point.
masonicb00m··on Show HN: ipscrub, an IP address anonymizer for Nginx
I prefer to look at it the other way around. Why would you need to log IPs? It’s like asking people for their social security number (USA) just to have a unique identifier—this is more info than you need.
masonicb00m··on California's other drought: a major earthquake is overdue
Reminds me of "WHAT IS THE CHANCE OF AN EARTHQUAKE?" by David Freedman. https://www.stat.berkeley.edu/~stark/Preprints/611.pdf. A fun read if you're into stats.
masonicb00m··on DND Shades – “Horse Blinkers for Knowledge Workers”
If that horse-related spelling surprised you, this one will blow your mind: the expression "chomping at the bit" is wrong; it's actually "champing at the bit" (with an "a")!

See https://www.bathroomreader.com/2014/04/chomping-vs-champing/.

Exactly the reaction I was hoping for ;)

Touché. I make software, so most of the things I build and distribute as information are eternally stuck behind a glass screen. Given your background, I can see how you'd be less impressed by the concept (but your work sounds pretty neat to me, too!).
masonicb00m··on Visualizing Realtime Bitcoin Transactions in ReactVR
This visualization is broken. I can’t see the moon.
masonicb00m··on Visualizing Realtime Bitcoin Transactions in ReactVR
This design makes it simple to prevent double spending. You just check that the transaction inputs are in the set of unspent transactions (UTXOs).

Reading books on a Palm Pilot... that brings back memories! The Sony Clie was a great little gadget.

I thought this would be the case, but I have been really pleasantly surprised by the quality. I watched some 4k60 videos on YouTube on this thing and thought they looked great. I have not done any gaming with it though. A photographer or graphic artist could probably find fault, but for me, it is very satisfactory.
masonicb00m··on The Best Monitor for Programming: A Cheap 40" 4K TV
Tough crowd.

I dislike multi-monitor setups. Dunno if it’s the bezels or what. A single unbroken surface feels better to me.

For a VC company’s web forum, some HNers sure find making money offensive :D

masonicb00m··on The Best Monitor for Programming: A Cheap 40" 4K TV
:) we might have different vision. I can’t resolve individual pixels with this setup unless I put my face near the screen.
masonicb00m··on The Best Monitor for Programming: A Cheap 40" 4K TV
Good point. I mainly do programming so color fidelity wasn’t a big concern.
masonicb00m··on The Best Monitor for Programming: A Cheap 40" 4K TV
3 affiliate links actually. It’s probably not the absolute best, but nuance makes for tedious writing. The general pattern of a 40+ inch 4K display is definitely worth a shot. If you find a better one for price/performance, I’d love to hear.
masonicb00m··on The Best Monitor for Programming: A Cheap 40" 4K TV
It doesn’t do automatic input switching. That’s a definite drawback. For the price though, I’m not complaining.

That one looks nice. Good port selection. Thanks for the link!

The "JavaScript" qualifier is just to let you know what flavor of regex it expects.
masonicb00m··on React/JavaScript fatigue
Nodded my head all through the article. Project setup hurts. "What folder do I put my components in? Even the ones that only get used on one page?"

We need a DHH.js to rise up and bring us "Rails, for React".

masonicb00m··on Stop Patent Trolls: Support the Innovation Act of 2015
"Patent trolls buy up patents and use them offensively against unsuspecting businesses—without creating or selling anything themselves."

This sounds suspiciously like something software companies would argue, to retain the right to protect their turf with patents, while reducing their exposure to professional patent enforcers.
