martswite··on Code Substitution Done Right - Switch.vim
I recently moved to vim as well. Everything I'm doing I'm pretty much aware that I could probably be doing it in some superdooper quick way...

I'll get there though. Eventually.

martswite··on Fusion: The quest to recreate the Sun’s power on Earth
Appreciate the link, cheers.
martswite··on Fusion: The quest to recreate the Sun’s power on Earth
Apart from the fact that BBC Worldwide isn't funded by our license fee or tax payers money. Still don't understand why we can't view it. Is it a subscription service to the rest of the world?
martswite··on Why you PHP guys should learn Golang
I'm pretty sure it's not an inferiority complex, im in no way precious over the language that I develop in. I just don't agree with the inference that developers that use PHP do so because they aren't smart enough to use other more complex languages.

The particular line of the article I quoted however does, to me, infer that php developers can only learn simple languages.

martswite··on Why you PHP guys should learn Golang
I primarily develop using PHP. I read the first few lines of this article, got to this 'PHP is easy to learn. Golang is as easy as PHP!' and basically read, 'Hey thicko PHP guy, you could probably learn to use this language, cos its simple enough for your addled brain'.

The immediate feeling of condescension turned me off.

martswite··on Show HN: Roomd, find new friends to live with
Same issue here, running on Ubuntu 11.10, Firefox V 11.0
martswite··on Charlie Stross on Girls Around Me
I may be way out here but, it's been mentioned that the data facebook holds that is publicly available could be used and mined to target certain groups of people...

Am I way out here in mentioning historical organisations that also stored masses of data on a population like the stasi (maybe extreme)?

I just find it extremely uncomfortable that people are so blasé about what they share on facebook. What worries me more is that I dont think people are ignorant of the privacy settings. Amongst my friends that do use it, they know, they just dont really care, purely because as some people have said it takes maintenance, makes it more difficult to connect with people or makes it impossible to be connected with...

I just find this whole culture of sharing intimate details with a) facebook and b) with each other, that we never really shared previously to be disturbing and the organisations that encourage this to be sinister.

martswite··on We're a 2.5 man team vs millions in VC. Please review our skunk-works project
As mirrored by a few people already, I would be interested in this product but I don't have a Facebook account.

Could you not provide options of where to pull event data from? iCal or a phonebook for example? This would give many of the users here a route into your application and you would still have the option of using the facebook api.

martswite··on It's amazing what American's will eat. But I bet it tastes good
I'm in complete shock. I'm vaguely aware that obesity is rather a big problem in America (no pun intended). I thought it was solely down to the supersize me culture, clearly not. Is there anything that isn't fried in America? Deep fried butter! Speechless....
martswite··on Google Maps UK now has 3D buildings
Is this not just for mobiles? I'm looking at London in Firefox and just see vanilla Google maps. I Google for "Google maps 3D buildings" all that comes up is Google maps 3d buildings launched in Paris and London and additionally some other large European cities...
martswite··on My experiences as a Recruiter on Hacker News
A nice article. It's a shame that people misunderstood your intentions regardless of how clear you were. I'd say you deserve an apology.

Just from reading this article my perceptions of recruiters has changed slightly, though I fear recruiters such as yourself are few and far between? Hope your start-up becomes what you want it to be. Good luck Peroni

martswite··on Thieves Found Citigroup Site An Easy Entry
If what the article says is actually true that simply changing account numbers in the URL allowed them to access other accounts, then I'm completely astounded.

Surely this is one of the first things a programmer learns. It's just basic security.
