martiuk··on "Open Source is awful in many ways, and people should be aware of this"
I sometime think whether some people, especially people like Lennart did not experience bullying at school and would prefer the internet be policed to prevent any "attacks" made towards them.

Sometimes you just need to take it on the chin and carry on.

Maybe it's because I'm from the UK and you just expect the the world to shit on you whenever possible, I'm not really affected by outright attacks and offensiveness, but I probably wouldn't let anyone get to me, like Lennart shows.

martiuk··on Bent iPhone claims put Apple under pressure to respond
People like to defend their purchases, especially their $700 ones.
martiuk··on iPhone 6s are being bent in people’s pockets
Apple's revolutionary curved display.

- Automatically adjusts to the user's pocket for improved comfort.

- Memory Aluminium holds for as long as you need.

- User adjustable by manual force.

martiuk··on NASA Invents a Folding Solar Panel Inspired by Origami
Wouldn't it be better to have a motor to spin it open and closed rather than having multiple motors to pull it open?
martiuk··on Cockroaches: The insect we're programmed to fear
Life 2.0.1.5 Release: Fixed an issue where some humans were not afraid of cockroaches.
martiuk··on “You Have Died of Dysentery”: History According to Video Games
One issue is that as you get better at playing the games it's extremely likely you'll conquer the world at some point while playing EUIV.

Personal restrictions such as preventing yourself from 'gaming' the game helps a more balanced mega campaign.

martiuk··on Everything that went wrong while building the Tumblr iOS share extension
You eventually get used to it, I think of opening each app from intents like a stack and you press back to 'pop' the apps off the stack to get back to email (in your example).
martiuk··on “You Have Died of Dysentery”: History According to Video Games
I prefer Paradox Development Studio's games to Civilization as a 'History Simulator', 'Mega Games' involving all of the 'contiguous' periods of history can be done with he following:

Crusader Kings II - 769CE* - 1453

Europa Universallis IV - 1444* * - 1821

Victoria II - 1832 - 1936 * * *

Hearts Of Iron III - 1936 - 1948 * * *

* As of Charlemagne DLC(unreleased)

* * Converted games from CKII are backtracked to this date.

* * * This is where a continuous game stops, but unofficial save game converters can allow a player to bridge their games over.

martiuk··on LIVE NOW: Glenn Greenwald, Assange, and Kim Dot Com in NZ
KDC is pretty much the anti-hero in this whole saga. While I don't really respect him as a person, I also don't believe it was fair/correct for what happened to him and I'm glad he's helping the cause against dragnet/mass surveillance.
martiuk··on Hands on with USB Type C: Reversible USB Connectors
I foresee a market of USB 3.1 external laptop graphics cards.
martiuk··on Moto 360 review – Beautiful outside, ugly inside
I was talking about Nexus/Play edition devices, not all Android devices.
martiuk··on Moto 360 review – Beautiful outside, ugly inside
One of the advantages of having a Nexus/Play Edition Device.

They have almost all their users on the latest OS, they control the stack end to end and everyone is quite fine if features are only supported on certain models.

martiuk··on A Call for a Low-Carb Diet
So, what you're saying is... every hunter-gatherer died before they were 30? Sounds like an average to me.
martiuk··on A Call for a Low-Carb Diet
Are you sure your number excludes early years deaths? I've seen this number bandied around and every time it include stillbirths and early years deaths.
martiuk··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (September 2014)

martiuk··on Ignore No More – lock your child's device until they call you back
The perfect app for helicopter parenting, be sure to tell your child you don't trust them as they leave the door.

I'm sure this would be a good product commercially.

The FAQ is a bit jarring, most of it seems to be self praise.

Non-Ionizing radiation means exactly that.

Watch out for those chemtrails you nut.
martiuk··on Twitter Won’t Stop Harassment on Its Platform, So Its Users Are Stepping In
I think people aren't used to the wild web and would prefer companies to look after them, rather than dealing with it yourself. I mean, ignoring haters is character building.
martiuk··on Missile Guidance Systems
I would suggest a read of this: http://www.moddb.com/mods/wicmw/downloads/flexible-intercept...

The creator of the mod did an excellent job at implementing more realistic missile guidance system for the mod.

martiuk··on Show HN: Dump receipts as you get them through the year, recall them at tax time
Might be a good idea to fix your security first before going public, sending passwords as plaintext is not a good idea.
martiuk··on We Will Fight Until The End
It's not a big 'surprise'.
martiuk··on Android Fake ID bug exposes smartphones and tablets
"We appreciate Bluebox responsibly reporting this vulnerability to us; third-party research is one of the ways Android is made stronger for users. After receiving word of this vulnerability, we quickly issued a patch that was distributed to Android partners, as well as to AOSP. Google Play and Verify Apps have also been enhanced to protect users from this issue. At this time, we have scanned all applications submitted to Google Play as well as those Google has reviewed from outside of Google Play, and we have seen no evidence of attempted exploitation of this vulnerability."
martiuk··on A $300M IT flop
gov.uk which had a great success, was done by hiring their own people to work on it. I don't see why anyone would think outsourcing is good for public projects.
martiuk··on Ask HN: What do you think of this first employee offer?
That's an absolutely disgusting amount of pay, I'm just under £20,000 and I think that's too low.
martiuk··on Devicons, an iconic font made for developers
I'm using chromium, with directwrite enabled and it looks exactly like you're describing. Thin fonts with Chrome/Chromium are always a problem.
martiuk··on Curiosity Finds Iron Meteorite on Mars
I'm sure xie wouldn't mind.
martiuk··on Show HN: A mostly complete 2014 "Tools of the Trade"
Jenkins is the only free software on the list, and it's listed with a payment next to it?
martiuk··on CISPA is back with a new name
PPUK needs all the help it can get, the Greens might also be a good choice but be aware of their occasional technophobia.
martiuk··on Kids Don’t Care About Cars
I don't know how it is in the US but in the UK, it was a real struggle to afford a car, luckily this year, my insurance dropped to a reasonable £800, compared to the £3000 I was being quoted for last year.

You can get your driving licence when you're 17, but at that point, (usually) you aren't earning enough money to drive a car.

So you're sitting on your license for 4 years, and when the insurers finally believe you can drive without crashing, you better be sure you remember everything you were taught 4 year ago.

I don't think it's cars that are going out of fashion, insurers are pricing 'kids' out of the driving seat.
