martinsnow··on White Hat Hackers Expose Iridium Satellite Security Flaws
But how can you translate that to dollars today?
martinsnow··on Better text rendering in Chromium-based browsers on Windows
Yes you're correct. My memory is a bit fuzzy but it the fact is in the article

> While Skia uses DirectWrite on Windows for certain functionality such as font lookup, the final text rasterization is actually handled directly by Skia. And one major factor in the "washed out" feedback from users is the internal contrast and gamma settings for text rendering.

> Two main differences in text contrast and gamma values were uncovered between Edge's Chromium-based engine and its prior engine. First, Skia does not pick up text contrast and gamma values from the Windows ClearType Tuner. Secondly, it uses different default values for text contrast and gamma than those used by Edge's DirectWrite-based text stack.

I was debugging blurry text in windows at a previous job where we used electron to develop a softphone application and could not understand why the lighter text was harder to read on windows. That would settle the debate.

I hope they will come up with better integration with windows so these differences will disappear.

martinsnow··on White Hat Hackers Expose Iridium Satellite Security Flaws
Sadly I expect them to be at the stage of no relevance. Just enough that as another commenter said it could make some money but satellites have no business value.
martinsnow··on Better text rendering in Chromium-based browsers on Windows
If i understand correctly, chrome is using windows own font rendering capabilities which should be the preferred method?
martinsnow··on A Year of Telepathy
Neuralink is being proven and it's on its way to market. There are so many people out there who will benefit from the technology.

Animal testing has existed for centuries and will continue to do so until we can fully sinulate a human being.

martinsnow··on JetBrains Fleet drops support for Kotlin Multiplatform
I have the opposite experience. Intellij works well, fewer crashes and no ai crap that gets in my way. Too many developers rely on shitty ai crutches and you can easily snuff them out because their code is shit.
martinsnow··on Patterns for Building Realtime Features
How do you handle deployments of realtime back ends which needs state in memory?
martinsnow··on 1% Equity for Founding Engineers Is BS
That is indeed very good compensation. How do you evaluate who gets 20%? That's not something you can afford giving out to many.
martinsnow··on 1% Equity for Founding Engineers Is BS
Stocks are regulated by legal frameworks in most countries. You can't dilute at will and you can't remove access to stock nor voting rights if they were issued as such.

These crypto tokens aren't even guaranteed to be issued to a wallet you control.

martinsnow··on 1% Equity for Founding Engineers Is BS
I find your answer incredibly arrogant as a developer because you don't have a successful product so it's a gamble for anyone choosing to join your company. For me it looks like you want to skirt regulations and not pay developers for what they're worth.
martinsnow··on 1% Equity for Founding Engineers Is BS
Why does your employees need to gamble on crypto assets when stock options are better understood and covered by law frameworks in all countries?

It thought my bald colleague was a plant in the background. So don't have high hopes for it. He did wear a headset so that is apparently very plant like.

martinsnow··on I'm Done with Ubuntu
My typical experience with Linux on the desktop. Install it, get frustrated with lack of compatible games, then something blows up after a week so it won't boot, back to windows.

I enjoy my Mac so much more when I want to to development. Linux just kinda faceplants itself every time i even attempt to use it for anything else than a server.

martinsnow··on Chat is a bad UI pattern for development tools
I agree. But in that context we're talking about specifications.

When we're trying to wrangle a piece of code to do something we want but aren't quite sure of how to interact with the api, it's a different matter.

What i found is that by the time copilot/gpt/deepseek has enough knowledge about the problem and my codebase, I've run out of tokens. Because my head can contain a much larger problem area than these models allow me to feed them in a budget friendly manner.

martinsnow··on Popular Linux orgs Freedesktop and Alpine Linux are scrambling for new webhost
I've nothing against red hat and i love that an organization is doing work in the free software space. But it's a choice as an engineer if you want to devote your loss of salary to do honest work.

I do open source in my free time because my family can't sustain itself otherwise. Kudos to all the devs out there working on open software.

martinsnow··on Popular Linux orgs Freedesktop and Alpine Linux are scrambling for new webhost
Red hat contribute a lot but they don't pay well. I believe their finances are tight.

Arm is still in control. Some went to form another company however.

Arm the company is based in the UK and thr UK wants to rejoin the EU. I don't think you should be so sure about that.

Of course. If you don't design your system right and enforce consistency it will be a mess. That's programming and pretty much engineering in a nutshell.
