martin1975··on A 64-year-old put his life savings in his carry-on, and U.S. Customs took it
I come from a country that borders Albania... Albania has a 60% muslim population, and given our current administration and mood toward islam, it is highly doubtful they were after his money but rather after something that went off on their 'threat to national security' radar. Could be a mistaken identity too, it's not unheard of .. many names on those watch lists sound similar or are not the same person at all.

I'm betting all moneys will be returned to him when they conclude whatever investigation they need to conclude. This is just a sensationalist headline that doesn't do any service to anyone....

Edit:

Funny, people downvote as if the government has no case - they clearly sent him a notice that “Enforcement activity indicates that the currency was involved in a smuggling/drug trafficking/money laundering operation.” and “pursuant to an administrative search of Mr. Kazazi and his bags, TSA agents discovered artfully concealed U.S. currency. Mr. Kazazi provided inconsistent statements regarding the currency, had no verifiable source of income and possessed evidence of structuring activity,” that is, making cash withdrawals of less than $10,000 to avoid reporting requirements."

Most cash has traces of drugs on it... and serial #'s on notes are sometimes marked when drug stings are conducted.

All I'm saying is, there's two sides to the story - not just the WaPo one. I guess it's hard to depict that on HN... WaPo isn't the source of truth on this - just an opinion. Like mine. Or anyone else here.

martin1975··on The iPhone dongle is still my fucking nightmare
I despise the removal of the 3.5 mm jack to this day... and I still do not get why Apple removed it. What exactly did it get in the way of and what was made available by its removal? Worst move ever.
martin1975··on I Write Letters to CEOs
I wrote a letter to Wal-Mart's CEO about 10+ years ago to apologize for switching the barcode from a less expensive Sony Walkman to a more expensive one because I didn't want to pay more. I was in college, about 19 years of age (mid 90's), and at the time felt that if I could get away with this, it's ok. And I did. Little did I know this act would gnaw on my conscience for many later. I asked them what could I do to make it right after so many years.

Soon after he received my letter, I got a call from the CEO's secretary to let me know he read my letter and that he forgives me and that there's nothing I need to do. Since I didn't expect the call, I was taken aback and moved to tears while I was talking to her. I expected some wrath and punishment for what I'd done. Instead, I experienced forgiveness.

Now if I could only quantify how much software, movies and music I've bootlegged while I was a student, I would probably write those CEOs a letter too, but I can't even remember it properly so I can quantify it. It wasn't a lot, and I mostly bootlegged because I thought it was "cool" to be visible on IRC #warez and what not... never really used or resold the software, just mostly did it cause I got to hang with the cool crowd.

Given I'm a software engineer for nearly 20 years now, I don't bootleg anything anymore... music, videos, apps.. and if I do, it's only because there's no trial for some of the apps. If I end up using the app, I pay for it or if I can't afford it, usually an employer will pay for it if I/we need it.

which one, the original or the turbo?
martin1975··on De Beers admits defeat over man-made diamonds
A knock-off will always be a knock-off because it lacks the authenticity mark of its creator ... in the case of diamonds, it's time.

In the case of hackintoshes, it's Apple... Prada shoes, the seal of Mario Prada... etc.

martin1975··on Why did I spend 1.5 months creating a Gameboy emulator? (2017)
Do you often procrastinate at your regular job? Just curious. Got that vibe from you, trying to confirm a certain reality (a bit of mine too).
martin1975··on No, there is no epidemic of loneliness
Mandela, though he was in solitary confinement for much of the 27 years he spent in jail, came out of it spiritually and mentally unscathed. And we have a suicide epidemic, if you'll believe the press, of people who were never in jail, and were surrounded by people whom probably could have helped the person.... provided he or she asked for help rather than deciding they were lonely or alone.

I'm not saying loneliness isn't real... all I'm saying is, it is a choice that needs to be recognized as such, even if we keep choosing it over and over and can do no other sometimes.

So if you feel lonely, unless you're in solitary, please at least TELL SOMEONE how you feel... if nothing else. Tell me, I'll listen.

martin1975··on Opa – An open-source, general-purpose policy engine
Was curious if the OPA acronym for the project is an allusion to a often used word among Greeks.. an exclamation during celebration or when lighting this deep fried goat cheese called saganaki after it's been sprayed with alcohol.

Technically asking a question about the authors is a project question, so I'm not sure why I got downvoted :/.

martin1975··on Opa – An open-source, general-purpose policy engine
Is one of you Greek?
martin1975··on OrmHate (2012)
No reason to hate ORM unless you're letting the ORM tool generate your schema, in which case, you might get really lucky... or you might find out the hard way that there's a fine distinction between DBAs and software engineers.
martin1975··on SquirrelMail is being removed from cPanel
Suppose one was to write a decent webmail front-end, how exactly does one make enough money to sustain its development, even if it's a one or two person effort?

I love open source but there's also a need for developers to live off what they make.

Who has successfully made a webmail front end that they could sell?

martin1975··on Against Facebook
So I'm curious after reading this, since Facebook lives off advertising, do advertisers hold Facebook accountable for generating a certain # of clickthroughs, or heavens forbid, some other ROI metric for their advertising dollars?

Or are advertisers just funneling money into FB regardless of any measurable impact on their revenue just because there are "N millions/billions of active users" monthly on it?

They could certainly claim this even if you logged in once a day, never looked at any ads and then just left. Why continue to pay money for advertising?

For Google, I can see how it makes sense, because you are already in "search mode" for something, so if they pop in an ad that is even semi-relevant, you might click on it - I know I have... but Facebook?

It seems that money follows eyeballs...whether those eyeballs actually deliver any value... who cares. Or am I off?

martin1975··on Use a Mikrotik as Your Home Router (2017)
not at all:

from pcengines, I got:

https://www.pcengines.ch/apu2c4.htm https://www.pcengines.ch/case1d2redu.htm https://www.pcengines.ch/msata16f.htm https://www.pcengines.ch/ac12vus2.htm

put that together and installed pfSense per their instructions:

http://pcengines.ch/howto.htm#OS_installation

You could get their wifi modules:

https://www.pcengines.ch/wle200nx.htm https://www.pcengines.ch/wle600vx.htm

but I advise against it if you want to run pfSense, since driver support on pfSense for these might be sketchy/difficult to get working. Linux might be a better choice for a router OS if you're going to get those modules. My personal recommendation is to avoid getting wifi onboard the apu2 and stick with this instead:

https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/nanostationm/

or if you want 802.11ac:

https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/nanostation-ac/

and just take up one of the three ports available on the apu2 permanently for your Nanostation.

Set this up, and you'll be happy for years. I consider it the ultimate DIY home router setup and I've experimented with many. This one takes the cake. The only thing I wish for is an extra RJ-45 port on the pcengines APU2 for some of the devices that are close by it (e.g. a mac mini I use as HTPC), but since everything or nearly everything has wifi nowadays, you don't get to notice this much. Worst case, if you need extra ports, hit amazon and type only "pfsense" in the box - there's a vendor called ProtectLi (https://protectli.com/) which sells 4 and 6 port boxes similar to the APU2, but with Intel instead of AMD (I'm kind of partial to AMD plus PCEngines is run by Americans/Swiss :). Those will work just as well though you're looking at spending more $$$. If that's no objective, then just get the 4 or 6 port ProtectLi.

Reply here let me know how it works out once you've got it setup the way you want.

martin1975··on Use a Mikrotik as Your Home Router (2017)
not sure - I have an external Ubiquiti AP I use, plugged into the APU2's ethernet port. You want wifi as part of the APU2 or separate?

martin1975··on Use a Mikrotik as Your Home Router (2017)
Had one for a few years. I now have/prefer pcengines apu2 + pfSense. Rock solid, performant and has everything I need and more.

martin1975··on Fuchsia is not Linux
So is Linux' code, except if you try to redistribute it by linking to it, you'd have to disclose your mods. Not so with Fuchsia's license. They can push out proprietary code all they want.
martin1975··on Fuchsia is not Linux
They certainly picked the correct license to do just that. GenodeOS has exactly what they needed on a formally proven kernel. Why didn't they use that? NIH syndrome... that's why. And of course, control.
martin1975··on Apple Plans to Use Its Own Chips in Macs from 2020, Replacing Intel
Can you spell/smell Microsoft Linux? Cause I can. :)

Apple is as good as dead if they actually carry this out.

martin1975··on Apple Plans to Use Its Own Chips in Macs from 2020, Replacing Intel
Apple couldn't have started digging their own grave soon enough. Now all that's left to do is for Microsoft to play its end game - provide a bridge for NT/Win32 apps to run atop Linux, and spend the next couple of years bolting/porting/reinventing their new UI on a rock solid server OS - Linux, which will soon become a rock solid desktop OS.

Bye bye Apple. Nice to have known you. Game over-Linux wins, we all win. No more proprietary OS.

martin1975··on Google News Initiative
I don't have a problem with 'truth' per se, merely a problem with who gets to adjudicate what is true versus what is not, even if something is apparently non-true.

Rather than delete or abridge any legal content (as defined by a litany of 1st Amendment SCOTUS cases), at least in the USA, instead of deleting/modifying/filtering news content, we should do with news content what we've done with movies' rating labels for as long as we have - tag the content with a 'truth' label.

So Google News can develop a tagging system that labels news articles as "most likely" to "least likely" to be true, like a 1-10 rating. HuffPo can have its own truth ratings for the content they push. Breitbart or Infowars their own, etc.

I'll go for a system like this any day over Google or the SPLC or CNN or Snopes or whomever crowning themselves "truth" endorses, when in fact, they're mostly spinning the facts and telling a story from their own POV/context.

martin1975··on Self-Censorship in Public Discourse: A Theory of 'Political Correctness' (1994) [pdf]
The problem is that nowadays stating one's views, convictions and principles that those "other people" disagree with is considered an offense. It's either agree with me or you're a Nazi.
martin1975··on Don't use VPN services
True. There used to be a way to open up anonymous bank accounts in Switzerland where anyone with the account #/access code could withdraw/deposit cash, but no more. Unless I'm mistaken, Switzerland also has its own version of KYC laws.

p.s. I pay all my taxes and take all the deductions I can.
