martin1975··on Why DALL-E will not steal my job as an illustrator
Thanks for reminding everyone that computers in all their glory and usefuleness, with all their AI will always remain a tool in service of human beings.
martin1975··on Amid chip shortages, companies bet on RISC-V
Sometimes it's not about an actual shortage, but more of an imposed (political/business motivated) shortage. If RISC-V can alleviate these concerns, the alleged 'shortage' may disappear.
martin1975··on Design the next iPhone
Where's the 'Working VPN without "Always on VPN"' button?
martin1975··on FreeBSD on the Framework Laptop
Is it possible to port Linux driver code to FreeBSD, given licensing issues and all that? Seems like an 'easy' fix, given that Linux has most of the non-working FreeBSD issues solved..if not all. I'm all for code re-use.
martin1975··on H1B rejected – builds unicorn back home
Don't fret. You're probably better off in the nicely developed parts in India as an engineer than anywhere in the USA.
martin1975··on Application submitted for US molten salt research reactor
So did the Chinese beat us to this one? :)
martin1975··on VPNs on iOS are a scam
This should trend to the top of HN. Apple bills themselves as a privacy-centric company. I hope they clean this up asap.
martin1975··on Alex Jones must pay $50m in punitive damages for Sandy Hook hoax claim
The chance of AJ paying out any money on this will be slim to nil, IMHO. I have no idea how they even came up with that figure on those parents other than some lawyer thought it'd be cool to just ask for so much money because they figure AJ can afford it. If there are any real damages, they are certainly not in the stratospheric amounts the jury awarded....
martin1975··on Ask HN: Is anyone using Fastmail for their business?
I administer a website + MX for a friend who runs a solar panel installation business for a number of years now... they've been very happy with their domain being hosted on fastmail.
martin1975··on Are you a naïve realist?
I know, right? :)
martin1975··on Some Assembly Required: An approachable introduction to assembly
"Since forever ago, I've wanted to try writing assembly, even if just to understand why the Rollercoaster Tycoon creator would write 99% of the game in it. To be fair, even after all of this, I still don't understand why they did that."

Hubris?

martin1975··on Are you a naïve realist?
Anyone noticed how we also tend to have different half-lives for labels describing people, e.g. someone who murders or rapes someone never loses the 'murderer' or 'rapist' label, however someone who stole something irrespective of its value or lied about something - material or not, do not tend to think of themselves as liars or thieves for as long as they are certain they got away with it or others have 'forgotten' it, or rationalized it away?

Wonder why....

martin1975··on Sen Feinstein: Why I changed my mind about Cali’s Diablo Canyon nuclear plant
Closing down instead of building modern nuclear plants will prove to be the worst knee jerk/emotional decisions California's leaders have ever made. I hope she's serious about not only keeping Diablo Canyon open but restarting San Onofre as well as building new nuclear power plants. Nuclear is the best option, despite any perceived risks.
martin1975··on Tell HN: The loneliness of a pretty good developer
Sounds like you aren't being properly motivated and your talents not used. Sign up to a project which is guaranteed to fail if you were the only person working on it. Then you will very quickly find out how your conceit dissolves, once you realize there's very little any one of us can do individually that is of great significance and why building software, like any other large effort, is necessarily a team effort.
martin1975··on Master’s Degree in Computer Science
If you're already working as an engr/scientist, the best motivation for a graduate degree would be to contribute something 'new' to the field and/or expand your skills so you get better at the job you're already doing. A grad degree may or may not result in more opportunities or better pay - and if these last two are your motivation, you probably shouldn't get a grad degree in CS. Getting ahead or earning more has very little to do with your IQ and probably a lot more to do with your EQ... I've seen brilliant folk get masters and PhD even in CS, an MBA, even JD... only to end up disenchanted because they start out with the wrong motivation and the outcome doesn't match their expectations.

Examining your motivations is not easy and should be done with someone that knows you well, isn't family and can offer objective/'cold' advice. If they fail to dissuade you w/some real life experiences and you are still fired up, then you should probably go for. it.

TLDR do not embark on a major undertaking without due process (or self process, as it may be).

Trust me, I've 20 years of software engineering exp and an undergrad in CS.

martin1975··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
You are being facetious I take it. Twitter started out as free speech forum. We have good definition of what is considered, or rather, NOT considered free speech given by decades of SCOTUS/court jurisprudence. Twitter would be wise to adopt this as a standard for moderation, which permits maximum freedom of speech minus illegal speech. No mora bans on so called "hate speech", or politically dissident speech, only illegal speech. If someone objects to any particular form of speech, use the block or mute button. Also, do not allow anyone under 18 on the platform. That should do it.
martin1975··on Show HN: I made a puzzle game in HTML5
Quite a fun brain teaser game! BTW, when you say HTML 5- I am assuming the use of Javascript - since HTML5 is merely a document markup spec?
martin1975··on Elon Musk to join Twitter’s board of directors
Edit, with a history of edits visible. Otherwise, it's b.s.
martin1975··on Four-year-old Israeli child tests positive for polio, first case since 1989
Being anti vaccination is fine, it's a human being's right to choose, I only ask they let me know ahead of time if possible of their position.
martin1975··on U.S. surgeons transplant pig heart into human patient
Wow, that's intense! Does anyone know if pig's blood typing matches ours and if not how do they overcome that? Would be curious to see what kind of lifetime they get from this transplant. Amazing.
martin1975··on SerenityOS demo at Handmade Seattle 2021 [video]
I've seen his videos a few times via HN - how close is the OS to being able to use GCC or CLANG and say, compile all Debian packages.... which is one of the largest repos. I mean for this to really be usable it would have to be able to work well w/existing millions of lines of C/C++ code...
martin1975··on Show HN: Long Range E-Bike
"Avoiding risky maneauvers" :) - reminded me of an insurance agent of mine who always quipped that motorcyclists are a claim waiting to happen... and his joke that there's only two types of motorcyclists, those who have been in an accident and those who will be in one.

People in general, at least in the US, don't really even register you as existing if you're on a motorcycle... it doesn't jibe with the typical car driver's frame of mind, which means - and you've already figured this out - the higher burden of staying alive/responsible is - sadly or not - on you.

Had a boss who rode his Harley every single day in Seattle to work and home, for 25+ years, no accidents. He was of the same mindset as you - no risky/stupid maneuavers and defensive driving. Turn your body/bike into a flashy/strobe thing if you have to, that gets attention... who cares if you inconvenience someone w/extra lighting as long as it saves your life and lets them know where you're at.

Take it out for a spin for me! :) Envy you.

martin1975··on Running BGP in large-scale data centers
So, who pushed out the configuration changes and is this person still employed at FB?
martin1975··on Covid-19 – The Spartacus Letter.pdf
The views he offers balance out the mainstream narrative.

And if you can find such a thing as a value free fact.. Let me know.

martin1975··on The Linux Distributions of 1992
Systemic - to me at least - means it's a matter of law, thus it affects everyone. I prefer to think of today's instances of racism as an individual/collective (by collective, I don't mean LARGE numbers necessarily) occurrences, rather than systemic. Assuming you aren't looking for perfection - which means no racist thought/word/deed in anyone in the USA - including non-whites who can also be very racist, fyi - then I'd say racism is on the whole pretty rare.

On the other hand, I do believe mental slavery is more prevalent than individual/collective racism :).

martin1975··on FOSS app removed from the Play Store for linking to the project's website
Right. It may not pan out however. Whereas the impact of Google Maps is already proven.
