Друже Тито, ми ти се кунемо, да са твога пута не скренемо!
martin1975··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
The source to Signal is open to analysis if you doubt its security. I suspect they C&D forks because they don't follow coding/security practices as upstream does, and it would be too hard to ensure they would if they just let anyone fork it.
martin1975··on Eclipse October 2023
Dammit, I clicked thinking Eclipse was releasing an update to their IDE :).
martin1975··on ChromeOS is Linux with Google’s desktop environment
Rumor has it, it may eventually replace Linux as the underlying OS to Android/ART. By now I'm thinking G's leadership is realizing the epic undertaking it would mean to bring Fuchsia to maturity... and I give Fuchsia a 50/50 chance of ending up in the vast Google graveyard (https://killedbygoogle.com/) in the next 5 years.

I'm curious why they couldn't poach one of the L4 microkernels to build Fuchsia on, specifically SEL4 which is used in Genode/SculptOS, same as they did with Linux and Android. It would've given them a strong base to build on, saved time/$$$....

martin1975··on Where does my computer get the time from?
If you're interested in precise time keeping, this is Time-Nuts is a great place to start (http://www.leapsecond.com/time-nuts.htm).
martin1975··on YouTube's crackdown on ad blockers intensifies
That's ok, we split the internet then.
martin1975··on YouTube's crackdown on ad blockers intensifies
judging by the flame fest they received on their github issues/comments section, I doubt they'll be proceeding. Then again, money talks and b.s. takes the walk every time and twice on sunday.
martin1975··on Facebook is blocking Canadians’ posts on the assassination of a BC Sikh leader
That's why I'm on Gab.
martin1975··on The Decomposition of Rotten Tomatoes
That's been my 'magic formula' for RT ratings as well :).
martin1975··on Doug Lenat has died
72 isn't really too old. Does anyone know what caused his death? Revenge of the COVID?
martin1975··on Tijuana's illegal sewer hookups linked to cross-border pollution
Send us a photo of your illegal alien that you allowed to move in with you please.
martin1975··on Tijuana's illegal sewer hookups linked to cross-border pollution
Democrats don't mind sewage spilling into the USA? Which do you think is easier to clean up, 50M illegals or border sewage leaks?
martin1975··on Man found guilty of child porn because he ran a Tor exit node
It's not. I come from that area. He's telling the truth.
martin1975··on The FCC responds to my ATSC 3 encryption complaint – they want to hear from you
ty, had no idea about this.
martin1975··on The FCC responds to my ATSC 3 encryption complaint – they want to hear from you
Funnily enough, I just got my HAM radio General license - precisely because I can't stand s*t like this. Now I'm just waiting for someone to clamp down on HAM frequencies......
martin1975··on Emacs is not just an editor (2015)
are there plugins/add-ons to emacs for Java that lets a dev do the kind of refactoring available in eclipse or intellij? It seems emacs brings a lot of power to develop such tools with it, but are the tools there yet or am I stuck having to write every little thing on my own by having to master lisp?
martin1975··on Will Carbon Replace C++?
Exactly. Thx for the heads up.
martin1975··on Will Carbon Replace C++?
You're well informed, sir/madam. :)
martin1975··on Will Carbon Replace C++?
Almost always the probably, almost certain answer to an essay like this is a "no."

Google could focus on making C++/Rust interop as smooth as Carbon's instead.

martin1975··on Z-Library Returns on the Clearnet in Full Hydra-Mode
The desire for control will unite even philosophically disparate governments. Pay attention.
martin1975··on What killed Karl Patterson Schmidt? Venom gland analysis of the boomslang (2017)
"Schmidt was asked just a few hours before he died if he wanted medical care, but he refused because it would upset the symptoms he was documenting."

His passion for his craft appears to have been second to none. A scientists' scientist. Truly inspiring.

martin1975··on US Marines defeat DARPA robot by hiding under a cardboard box
Sorry to offend your sensibilities bud. This discussion thread is over.
martin1975··on US Marines defeat DARPA robot by hiding under a cardboard box
I could. The next thing he will do is accuse me of solipsism. So I'm gonna stop right here and agree with him.
martin1975··on US Marines defeat DARPA robot by hiding under a cardboard box
How old are you if you don't mind me asking?
martin1975··on US Marines defeat DARPA robot by hiding under a cardboard box
are you feeling depressed or suicidal?
martin1975··on US Marines defeat DARPA robot by hiding under a cardboard box
I'd like to think we're more than just machines. We have souls, understand and live by a hopefully objective set of moral values and duties, aren't thrown off by contradictions the same way computers are.... Seems to me "reproducing" that in AI isn't likely... despite what Kurzweil may say :).
martin1975··on US Marines defeat DARPA robot by hiding under a cardboard box
How's that? I don't even see problem free self-driving taxis, and they even passed legislation for those in California. There's hype and then there's reality. I get your optimism though.
martin1975··on US Marines defeat DARPA robot by hiding under a cardboard box
Seems we're approaching limits of what is possible w/AI alone. Personally, I find a hybrid approach - interfacing human intelligence w/AI (e.g. like the Borg in ST:TNG?) to provide the military an edge in ways that adversaries cannot easily/quickly reproduce or defeat. There's a reason we still put humans in cockpits even though commercial airliners can pretty much fly themselves....

Hardware and software (AI or anything else) are tools, IMHO, rather than replacements for human beings....

martin1975··on Apple CEO Tim Cook requests and receives a 40% pay cut
If this staves laying people off, then I'm all for it.
martin1975··on Please don’t film me in 2023
Unless laws are passed to make filming others in public, this is unlikely to ever stop. Chances are, such laws will not get passed as it will intrude on civil liberties and free expression of many. I also recommend against swatting away, as the author in the Verge concludes he/she will do, at someone's phone if they don't consent to being recorded. You run the risk of breaking someone's phone that way, giving potential rise to increased conflict or a small claims suit. Best response is to walk away or ignore.
