marshallward··on The Ford Mustang Mach-E and the danger of electric cars
TIL that a 2009 car is "extremely old".
marshallward··on LFortran Minimum Viable Product (MVP)
Congratulations, Ondrej. This is a great milestone for the project.
marshallward··on Use Alacritty instead of Termite
I tried to switch maybe a year ago, but alacritty was measurably slower and heavier than termite, so I dropped it.

Now I concede that I did not personally notice any difference, aside from the usual config changes, but surely there is still a case for a CPU side VTE based terminal? Or am I wrong?

marshallward··on Fortran Package Manager
Weather forecasting in most countries are based on numerical models written in Fortran.

Despite what you may have heard, the language has evolved over the decades and has most of the features one would expect from a modern language.

marshallward··on Mastodon Renaming “Toots” to “Posts”
I reckoned it was the mastodon tooting its trunk, but now I'm just confused.
marshallward··on How Developers Choose Names
Just to quickly clarify: eigenvectors are not named after a person. It's a German word meaning "own" or "inherent" and was meant to denote something which resembled itself.

marshallward··on Real estate agent-owned homes are on the market longer and sell for more (2005)
We had no buyers agent in Australia, only a seller's agent. Buying a house in the US is unnecessarily complicated.
marshallward··on Dvorak vs Colemak (2010-2020)
It would have helped if they compared Dvorak to Colemak mod dh variant. It addresses many of the issues raised here by moving D below T and H below N, and moving the more rare K and G as left-right motions.
marshallward··on Killing TurboTax
As someone who has to file both, I found that the federal taxes to be comparable, perhaps I'd even say the Australian was more complex. The games played with real estate can be rather complex. But what I also saw was software doing most of the number crunching for me, and even fetching the numbers from my various employers and assets.

But your point about the state income tax is well taken, this does make it a much harder problem here than in Australia.

marshallward··on Killing TurboTax
Filing taxes online in Australia is free, and I'm sure it's of comparable complexity.

This does not exist in the US the highest levels of government have no incentive to provide it.
