marricks··on Red meat is not a health risk. New study slams years of shoddy research
I think mahogany’s comment is more important but I just want to add: how many subsidies they get doesn’t relate at all to what research they might fund.

They’re deeply tied to the meat industry so would benefit more from increased consumption.

marricks··on Red meat is not a health risk. New study slams years of shoddy research
Aren’t cattle the biggest grain consumers, so wouldn’t that be counter productive?

I’ve heard of the ag lobby and the meat and dairy lobbies but never big grain. Of course they exist and do something but going against the meat lobby just seems weird.

marricks··on Apple Rankings
I don't get why people like honeycrisp so much. It's like a sweet, appley, cardboard.
marricks··on Aerobic exercise can reduce the risk of metastatic cancer in mice: study
> Also, max heart rate is only useful after you've been running for awhile

100%, don’t geek out in the beginning just run at a slow pace until it’s comfortable and several consistent months in tinker around

marricks··on Aerobic exercise can reduce the risk of metastatic cancer in mice: study
I completely agree on all of this. I had an on again off again relationship with running before this year and it’s because… I ran in the same shoes for 8 years and I’d stop when my hip or knee felt off. Got new shoes this year and I’ve done more running than I ever had with no issues. Shoes only last 250-500 miles!

Definitely agree with pain as well, there is good pain and bad pain and tendon pain is never good pain.

Pretty great thing to read coming back from a tempo run! I just go into it this year, and I'd like to say, it's more fun than I thought. Every aspect.

If you get a heart rate monitor and dive into what you're doing even difficult high intensity runs are enjoyable. It's all about expectations and if you go into it thinking

- "I'm going to run at 75% of my max heart rate" you know you're going to be winded, but at the end feel great

- "I'm going on an easy run 60% of max heart rate" you know you'll be able to have a nice conversation along the way and get some good thinking in

etc etc, it's great. Don't start with a heart rate monitor but after a few months it adds a lot of fun for those who like geeking out on numbers and planning.

marricks··on Sam Bankman-Fried tries to explain himself
> This isn't going to happen overnight

What isn't going to happen overnight, justice? A fairer world?

I don't think a fairer world is on its way, I wish it was but the powerful won't be held accountable because people simply don't have the power to hold them accountable. We simply don't live in a just world.

marricks··on Why is every layoff 10-15%?
Sorry if it seems flippant, but I provided just as much justification for my argument as you did.
marricks··on Why is every layoff 10-15%?
Yeah, exactly, and you only actually use 10% of your brain. Probably don’t need two hemispheres to be honest.
marricks··on Is algae the new kale?
Seems like you are pluralizing your own anecdote. Sorry for your issues though.
marricks··on Is algae the new kale?
Completely valid, I worried about that after I typed it but decided to leave it in to relate more to the article which opens on a wacky start up idea.
marricks··on Is algae the new kale?
I try not to post too many empty “I totally agree” comments but man, brussel sprouts are amazing.

Who ever popularized boiling them is a damn fool. Pan friend then oven roasted, just amazing. Best thing in the world.

Also you’re right on all points, but god, love me some sprouts.

marricks··on Is algae the new kale?
I love all these whacky avenues people take when eating just plants is a very low foot print option available to almost everyone.

We don’t need to eat crickets, we don’t need to eat algae, we don’t need bioreactors for growing meat.

I think the main reason we don’t hear more about just how goddamn efficient a bowl of lentils and rice is, or oatmeal, is because it’s not sexy. You just can’t make a start up on beans and rice.

Which is a shame, because beans and rice are healthy and tasty. And also are one of the avenues to save the planet.

marricks··on CRISPR cancer trial success paves the way for personalized treatments
I was directly calling out the bold and wrong claim that “it will be available for the masses” because that is entirely wrong.

If I get cancer 10 years from now I could be in luck! But it doesn’t mean I should immediately assume everyone else is.

marricks··on CRISPR cancer trial success paves the way for personalized treatments
Couple points:

- MRNA COVID vaccine patents weren’t open sourced or available for the third world but Cuba’s vaccine solutions are

- simple things like dental care aren’t offered in the US

I think you should replace “available for the masses” with available “to the middle classes” which may seem the same to the average HN reader but not the average inhabitant of our planet

marricks··on Disney says it has more streaming customers than Netflix
> the writing was on the wall

I really hope not. It’s possible the 2010s will be seen as a golden of the TV shows where there was so much competition for eyeballs that many shows were made which otherwise might not have been. Niche demographics seemed catered to which otherwise might not have.

Moving back to Disney owning everything and other channels not being able to compete… that’d be sad. Some people aren’t really excited about super hero shows or Star Wars anymore.

marricks··on I worked for Elon Musk in the early days of SpaceX
> Musk drives you like a good highschool sports coach

Which might be good to get results from traumatized teenagers for a few years but probably not adults.

Also, child or adult, you shouldn’t have a tyrant able to abuse you at will until you quit.

marricks··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
To some extent he actually thinks he can’t do anything wrong except be “too ambitious.”

So the more undeniably-short-sighted-flat-out-wrong stuff he does the more logic goes out the window.

marricks··on From Google to Twitter
Cool that the new free speech-haven twitter doesn't allow advertising extensions internally or cartoons.

Some proponents of free speech really only care if their speech is curtailed and care little about anyone else's.

marricks··on UK Government scans all web servers hosted in the UK for vulnerabilities
Why not both? They will never tell you the unsavory things they're doing. At least, not without coercion.
marricks··on General Mills, Audi pause Twitter ads, will evaluate site
Free for who to do what with?

Sure, “the bird” will be free, in a sense, when it’s profitable and doesn’t care about advertisers, but that freedom is free for Elon to do whatever he wants with it.

Not freedom for users or in any other (actually good) sense of that bloated meaningless word.

marricks··on NASA finds super-emitters of methane
Really hoping this was outside our solar system and indicative of life, TBH.
marricks··on D-Wave Launches in AWS Marketplace
Isn’t it, anything but slower and more costly than anything you could do with a convention computer?

Oh wait, it’s just a very small subset of problems, nvm.

marricks··on “Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with diverse viewpoints”
The adage “there’s no way to please everyone” is the embodiment of that job.
marricks··on The American chip industry’s $1.5T meltdown
Wasn't this foretold during the chip shortage by most articles written about it? That there'd be a down turn and everyone would have over invested in building new plants? Even worse because the fed is terrified of inflation / higher labour costs the US government is basically causing the melt down.
marricks··on Ask HN: What is your fav “I can't believe in 2022 this still doesn't work right”
It sure does, but they said "regardless of operating system." Outside of the apple-verse it still sucks.
marricks··on Ask HN: What is your fav “I can't believe in 2022 this still doesn't work right”
You're missing the point. Of course we have "the technology" for them, but most companies/people decided it was a good idea to have progress bars lie.
marricks··on Most Americans think money comes before mission at U.S. news organizations
Well, no matter what you read, you have to think about what the incentives are. Everything has a bias, especially people who claim to be unbiased. So if you really wanted to be "unbiased" you could at least spread that out.
marricks··on Consumer Price Index September [pdf]
I think we have vastly different values and even if we agreed on the same set of facts we wouldn't agree. Interesting talk, though.
marricks··on Consumer Price Index September [pdf]
Ok, let's check in next year and see if the US life expectancy rebounds from its two year decline.

I'm guessing not though, if daily COVID deaths are anything to go by.
