marliechiller··on Flowers for Algernon (1965) [pdf]
Can you explain why you think that way? Long covid gives people varying degrees of brainfog and debilitation ranging from simple forgetfulness all the way to being bed bound and needing round the clock care. It seems quite apt to me
marliechiller··on The lithium-ion battery may not be the best bet for EVs
Thanks for this anecdote. It really made me realise I take a lot of infrastructure for pedestrians for granted here in the UK
marliechiller··on The day I canceled my Spotify subscription
I experienced all of this on a recent flight, much to my frustration. Once fully exasperated at having the podcasts id predownloaded not actually play, I turned to my audible app. This too spent the first minute of booting clearly trying to contact servers to call home with a locked up, unusable screen, despite me having a large local library for access.

App developers clearly rarely test their code in airplane mode these days, much to our annoyance!

marliechiller··on Hyrum's Law
Noone has to be harmed for it to be graceless, its just an opinion
marliechiller··on Google is making a map of methane leaks for the whole world to see
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it the case that whilst methane is many times worse than CO2 in terms of its warming effect, it also has a much shorter "half life" than CO2 - in the region of a few years before its no longer having an effect on warming. Not to minimise the fact that we should be avoiding contributing to global warming in any way possible, but comparing it to coal therefore is apples to oranges
marliechiller··on Eating fewer calories can ward off ageing
I found this recent huberman labs episode particularly enlightening:

https://www.hubermanlab.com/episode/controlling-sugar-cravin...

One of the key takeaways for me was the “calories in- calories out” (CICO) model of metabolism and weight regulation and how specific macronutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrates), fiber and sugar can modify the CICO equation.

People tend to think that a calorie consumed is a calorie utilised irrespective of how the body actually processes that calorie.

The definition of a calorie is "a unit of energy equivalent to the heat energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 °C (now often defined as equal to 4.1868 joules)." i.e not what our body is doing to our food when we eat it.

The example used in the episode is that of a handful of almonds, say, 160 calories. The fibre content of the rusk causes approx 30 calories of those almonds to not actually be digested by you but by your gut microbiome instead!

marliechiller··on Interactive examples for learning jq
x1000 this. I find I have similar reasoning that I apply to awk. I _know_ some people get massive benefits out of using it, I just dont need it often enough to actually pick it up... GPT to the rescue I suppose
marliechiller··on Interactive examples for learning jq
I feel like learning something like jq is rendered almost obsolete with the onset of GPT. Spending time learning the syntax of a tool I will use one every so often seems like a waste of mental energy when I can just rely on GPT to spit out whatever I need on demand
marliechiller··on Do You Need a Visit to the Confident Man Ranch?
Something being more or less generalised doesnt necessarily mean more or less easy to answer. In this instance, its much easier to give axioms to being a good person than it is to being a good man. Especially in this day and age where the very notion of being a man (or woman) is being brought into question.
marliechiller··on Wales' 20mph speed limit: How has the first month gone?
Country roads also have a) considerably less traffic and pedestrians b) often have obvious blind spots which drivers cannot speed around without very obviously rolling the dice. Its why you see traffic calming measures in Belgium and the Netherlands which are in the form of straight avenues having lots of bends[0] in to ensure drivers have to pay much closer attention to the road.

Further to that, putting signage on a lot of these rural areas isnt economically viable for a road that has very little thoroughfare and associated accidents. That said, having 60 everywhere and trusting drivers sound insane

marliechiller··on Natural beekeepers are the radical dissenters of apiculture
I cant tell if this is sarcasm or not... In case it isnt, the abstinence of eating meat has an abundance of easily verifiable conservation benefits which far outweigh not eating meat. That in itself shows that they care about species. I really hope it is sarcasm though...
marliechiller··on Natural beekeepers are the radical dissenters of apiculture
what about disbudding, premature parent/calf separation, artifical insemination and harvesting of male calfs?
marliechiller··on Getting a job at Apple without going to college or doing LeetCode
The point is not whether an applicant can or cannot do it, the point is that the question is deliberately rephrasing to obscure a candidates understanding. If you ask your average candidate to do that in laymans terms or they were given 5 seconds to google this would be a trivial task and you would have a different outcome. All this selects for is the candidate to have a working definition of an ascii decimal string in their head, it represents no ability to problem solve whatsoever.
marliechiller··on Getting a job at Apple without going to college or doing LeetCode
The filter works perhaps for whatever niche you might be working in. I cant imagine asking this to one of my candidates and then assessing their entire professional experience off of something like this though.
marliechiller··on Getting a job at Apple without going to college or doing LeetCode
I have written countless programs but would not be able to answer that without first turning to google. You might have screened out plenty of valid applicants with this
marliechiller··on Ask HN: Any interesting books you have read lately?
Theres a great forum called ukaps (https://www.ukaps.org/) which has tons of resources for getting started. Its a highly addictive hobby! Also recommend watching some of the cinescaper videos on youtube for inspiration :)
marliechiller··on Sao Paulo: A city with no outdoor advertisements (2013)
Perhaps its revealing of the true nature of way cities really are - huge concrete, brick and mortar landscapes. Maybe the revulsion is a natural reaction and humans are inclined towards a more earthly aesthetic which advertising simulates through color
marliechiller··on WHO advises against use of artificial sweeteners
> the farther away I move from those wretched, miserable rain-drenched isles.

you dont make a compelling case when you end your point with such bias

marliechiller··on WHO advises against use of artificial sweeteners
So if I have to choose between diet and normal coke, which one is objectively worse for my health now?
marliechiller··on Some mistakes I made as a new manager
> The "strong ideas loosely held" type guys need to be careful when they become management, because while it may work with peers (if they also love arguing), it doesn't work with a power imbalance. All your "strong ideas" will become "permanently held", congrats.

As someone who loves a verbal spar and almost certainly falls into this category, this one resonates with me and I will be taking it to heart going forward. Thanks for pointing this one out!

marliechiller··on The meat industry blocked the IPCC’s attempt to recommend a plant-based diet
thats... not how toxicity is working in this sense and your anecdote doesnt disprove what he is saying. Another anecdote - I went surfing at the end of last summer and was advised not to go into the sea as there had been heavy rains up the valley which had washed refuse off the fields and into the estuary. Lots of people who ignored the advice got sick that day as it turns out the runoff is toxic.
marliechiller··on AstroNvim is an aesthetic and feature-rich Neovim config
Always wanted to try it but the biggest barrier to me is that if I were to pick this up, it would not be available on all machines where as vi is.
marliechiller··on Vimium – A browser extension that provides Vim-style keyboard controls
pressing 'o' will achieve the same thing but also allow you to search the internet as if using a google search (or your default search engine)
marliechiller··on Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
We share a huge amount of culture.
marliechiller··on Study reveals average age at conception for men vs. women over past 250k years
Why would you want a 20 year old wife at age 50. The maturity gap would be almost unbridgeable. The only benefits are sexual and even then the maturity aspect might play a part. Even in my late 20s, the idea of someone who has just left their teens would be deal breaker
marliechiller··on UK: Excess deaths in 2022 among worst in 50 years
Is this prevalent in the UK? I didnt even realise
marliechiller··on What happens when babies are left to cry it out?
I do sometimes wonder on the effects of "positive" bullying in social circles. Not physical violence, but teasing etc. One boy in our childhood friendship group was constantly teased for his weight and bad eating habits. Eventually, he had had enough and one summer, hit the gym and got in shape. I suppose it easily could have gone the other way and this is all anecdotal but there must be other instances of such social effects
marliechiller··on Female spies of MI6
I found this extends to lower status roles in general - I have also worked as a secretary as a male and found the same thing
marliechiller··on Beyond Meat is struggling, and the plant-based meat industry worries
Happily, I see your original comment has been downvoted. Im not sure how wanting to reduce suffering is cult-like but each to their own...
marliechiller··on Beyond Meat is struggling, and the plant-based meat industry worries
correct, which is even more reason to try to reduce animal consumption as they make up a massive proportion agriculture required just for their feed
