markx2··on Show HN: I made a service to convert WordPress blogs to Hugo
And how do I upload an image of my cat to my all new Hugo site?

WP lets me drag/drop or upload media very very easily. Has done for years.

Hugo? or indeed most SSG's?

markx2··on Age verification mandatory for porn sites in the UK starting July
Those that do not wish to verify and cannot afford a VPN could start using 'free' VPN sites / extensions and in doing so open up their computer / network to more malicious content.

Those that do not use a VPN will be justifiably concerned that a breach at some later date will expose them.

Expected: articles from the likes of TorrentFreak which detail 'no logging' vpn sites.

The children will all be safe though, so there's that.

Pornhub's stats, which they publish, will make for interesting reading.

markx2··on Mullenweg Shuts Down WordPress Sustainability Team, Igniting Backlash
> Hey - if this is important to you, by all means pursue this direction, but I would cut this sort of initiative too.

This was costing Matt nothing. Zero.

The work was being done, for free, by passionate people.

markx2··on My Experience Biohacking
It is absolutely for amusing fun.

"I bet I can lift that paperclip 6 inches off the table with one finger"

Mine is not strong enough to lift much more than a paperclip. However, I have many magnetic fidget toys and when one of those attracts to the finger magnet it does strongly which impedes blood flow to the skin in the middle. It's the same as a kid swallowing one bucky ball - probably does nothing - but if they swallow another, and they attract through tissue, problems.

markx2··on My Experience Biohacking
I felt nothing. Been through UK/US customs a few times with a magnet in one finger and 3 rfid implants and I felt nothing. Nothing was detected.

Maybe the magnet was detected but as I have my hands out and fingers spread a visual check would dismiss any threat. The same could be said for non-magnetic steel implants I have - one in each hand.

markx2··on The secretary who turned Liquid Paper into a multimillion-dollar business
I have never had cause to use the product but I do have one experience.

1981, High School and the teacher is handing back our hand-written essays after marking them. She berated many of the class, me included, for handing in such shoddy work because of the amount of errors. That might be fair enough but then she held up one piece of A4 paper and did so in a way that the sunlight from the window came through it. "This" she exclaimed "is perfect and you should sll do better".

The sunlight showed blocks of what in the UK was called Tippex.

Teacher was clueless, but the felllow student had done it very well.

markx2··on US newspapers are deleting old crime stories, offering subjects a 'clean slate'
https://www.judyrecords.com/ probably has it.
markx2··on Fatty acid amides present in Camembert cheese improved cognitive decline
"Orally administered CC improved the cognitive decline induced by a high-fat diet"

Does this mean that:

1. the cognitive decline was improved and therefore the decline hastened

or

2. something else?

markx2··on Is Matt Mullenweg the Mad King of WordPress?
YES.

"It’s disappointing to be legally compelled to provide free labor to an organization as parasitic and exploitive [sic] as WP Engine,"

No mention at all of the thousands of hours from contributors that enabled him to build wordpress, wordpress.com and therefore automattic.com

markx2··on Price of Freedom – Matt Mullenweg (2007)
Thanks - edited.
markx2··on [dead]
You missed the three questions I asked.
markx2··on [dead]
If it was just a 'basic murder' why the resources being used to solve it?

If it was just a 'basic murder' why did the killer take his time - days - to take action?

If it was just a 'basic murder' why the words on the bullet casings?

I'm in the UK and have some familiarity with the US 'healthcare' system and from where I am this is not a 'basic murder'.

markx2··on Delicious Library (2004)
I still have the handheld scanner that I bought to catalogue our many DVD / CD collection. I forget why I did - insurance probably - but the way the app displayed was perfect.
markx2··on Is it me or is Reddit mostly bots now?
> Names that are all generated the same way

Years ago you could enter a username and if it was taken you would get a suggested username with added numbers. "Think 'simon' is taken, what about 'simon7889' ?"

Sometime in the last couple of years it autosuggests. word_word_number. For example Interesting_Bus_7217

My suspicion, with zero evidence, is that this was a deliberate choice to enable more botting.

markx2··on The US copyright office has struck down a major effort for game preservation
> That ruling cites the belief of the Entertainment Software Association and other industry lobby groups that "there would be a significant risk that preserved video games would be used for recreational purposes."

I have an RPi which has over 10k games from my youth. I play those games, some arcade, some from early consoles when I want to play those games. Just like sometimes you want to listen to music from when you were a teen.

I also have many consoles and games which I will hook up to my TV when I want to play those games - SSX Tricky anyone?

I have a PC and a Steamdeck with almost 9k licenses to play games.

So what do the ESA want?

Kill off music older than x years? KIll off games older than x years? (MAME would like a word there)

The ESA argument - as quoted above - is bullshit.

markx2··on The ISS Is Leaking Air–and NASA and Russia Can't Agree Why
"Earlier this year, NASA elevated the leak to the highest level of risk as the rate of air escaping from the module had doubled from one pound of air per day to a little over two pounds."

How, in a gravity free environment, do you weigh air?

I would assume - knowing literally nothing about it - that the internal atmosphere is constantly monitored. That monitoring detects a change and a lowering of 'air' and so releases 'air' from a reserve and it is the weight of _that_ which is the measurement?

markx2··on Steam releases new built-in recording feature
I've been using this on the Steam Deck for a while and it is excellent. I mainly use it to grab video of glitches or other gameplay / menu effects which I can then share with developers. Very handy.
markx2··on Bullenweg.com is no longer available following threats of legal action
All the forks exist, as does the original repo. (Edit: origlnal repo has gone)
markx2··on Before you buy a domain name, first check to see if it's haunted
Automattic.com was bought (no idea if it was unregistered / acquired) by Matt Mullenweg when he set up the company. He also bought https://a8c.com.

Here in the UK with EE/BT that correctly redirects to automattic.com, but it might not for you depending on your ISP.

The wayback machine shows adult content links prior to the domain being put on sale, hence the blocking.

markx2··on Knocker uppers: Waking up the workers in industrial Britain (2016)
Time related:

"Elizabeth Ruth Naomi Belville (5 March 1854 – 7 December 1943), also known as the Greenwich Time Lady, was a businesswoman from London. She, her mother Maria Elizabeth, and her father John Henry, sold people the time. This was done by setting Belville's watch to Greenwich Mean Time, as shown by the Greenwich clock, each day and then "selling" people the time by letting them look at the watch and adjust theirs"

A friend and I would play the Sega Megadrive version.

There was one track - sand, around water, started going left - which we both loved. The normal race was IIRC 3 laps. But this track could be unlapped. So we would start and by mutual agreement go backwards to increase the number of race laps. Once we got where we wanted, 10 laps, we would line up at the start and do the 3,2,1....
