markusw··on Go is my hammer, and everything is a nail
It's not really about Go, I think. But it makes me productive, and I like that. I don't think it's a magic bullet at all. Lots of things annoy me about it. But it's _good enough_ for quite a lot of things IMO.

But tying shoes with a chainsaw does sound kinda fun. :D

I believe there are many different hype cycles at once, depending on ones vantage point. The world is large!
markusw··on Go is my hammer, and everything is a nail
Nope, it's the same. It's one of the things I value about the language and project.
markusw··on Go is my hammer, and everything is a nail
What you see as missing, others (including myself) see as delightfully constrained and solved in a different way.
markusw··on Go is my hammer, and everything is a nail
It actually gets even better! :D Enjoy the journey!
markusw··on Go is my hammer, and everything is a nail
I choose to read most comments in a positive light, but thank you for your kindness. :)
markusw··on Go is my hammer, and everything is a nail
Yep, totally agree! But I learned Go, so I wrote about that. :D I tried Brainfuck once, but I don't think my brain can wrap that enough to make it a career.
markusw··on Go is my hammer, and everything is a nail
I guess we're at "I am Go and also a hammer and all the nails" then. :D
markusw··on Go is my hammer, and everything is a nail
Yes, I definitely could have. But I don't know C#, so that would have been an awful blog post. :D
markusw··on Go is my hammer, and everything is a nail
Yup, this exactly!

Author here. Well, it has worked pretty well for me so far, so I don't know why I would switch. Go is fast and expressive enough for my use, and it's probably outweighed by being super familiar anyway.

(BTW, in my eight years of Go, I think I've used protobufs maybe once or twice. HTTP FTW!)

markusw··on Go is my hammer, and everything is a nail
I wasn't aiming for that. My point is more: I know Go already, it's good enough for my purposes, so I'm using that as my hammer. I could just as well have been Java or C# I learned eight years ago and used that for everything. :)
markusw··on Denmark to charge $100 per cow in first carbon tax on farming
True, good points. But I would prefer that the land is then used for plant-based food for people instead of (as I recall) 60% for feeding the animals for meat export.
markusw··on Denmark to charge $100 per cow in first carbon tax on farming
I live in Denmark. We have way more pigs than people here. We export most. Only 2% of our nature isn’t farmland. The farming sector only contributes marginally to our economy, while being responsible for an extraordinary amount of the carbon equivalent.

I look forward to this change, and more like these!

markusw··on Denmark to charge $100 per cow in first carbon tax on farming
Good thing it’s not all food then, but things that are actively bad for our continued existence on this planet.
markusw··on Denmark to charge $100 per cow in first carbon tax on farming
Good thing we have scientists who can model things so we don’t have to guess blindly! https://ourworldindata.org/carbon-price

I live in Denmark and look forward to this change.

markusw··on I sold TinyPilot, my first successful business
Really interesting read, thank you for sharing!

You mentioned that building tinypilot suddenly sparked way more interest than your other attempts. Do you have a plan for your next product? Try out different things and hope you find something that gains similar traction? Or do you have some sort of evaluation criteria for your ideas?

markusw··on Show HN: Use Go's HTML/template to write React-like code
Hey, I wrote that! :D I hope you find it useful.
markusw··on Show HN: gomponents, HTML components in pure Go
Honestly, I don't know. I've never measured because it's never been a problem. Most of it is writing string literals to an io.Writer, no idea what the overhead is there. Could be fun to write some benchmarks. :)

With regard to caching, I think I would opt for a solution at a different layer. For example, render the page and just cache the output in memcached, Redis or similar. Or just in memory maybe. As always, it depends.

markusw··on Show HN: gomponents, HTML components in pure Go
Cool! What does reactive client-side rendering mean in this context? That state changes are pushed from the server?
markusw··on Show HN: Goqite, a persistent message queue Go library built on SQLite
Ha, I’ve started the same thing in Go, but didn’t get that far. https://github.com/maragudk/sqlite
markusw··on Show HN: Goqite, a persistent message queue Go library built on SQLite
Yeah, it's not exactly a new idea. I'm actually a bit surprised it's this popular. :D

Thanks! Doing it in another language would be almost trivial, there's really not a lot of code involved. I've focused mostly on making a nice, easy to use API for the common cases. No more, no less.

markusw··on Show HN: Goqite, a persistent message queue Go library built on SQLite
Ooooooooh. TIL!
markusw··on Show HN: Goqite, a persistent message queue Go library built on SQLite
See the other thread on naming. ;)

Haha, you got me. :D
markusw··on Show HN: Goqite, a persistent message queue Go library built on SQLite
There you go! :D https://github.com/maragudk/goqite/pull/31
markusw··on Show HN: Goqite, a persistent message queue Go library built on SQLite
Yeah, that’s a good idea! I was today old when I learned that SQLite can have transactions across separate db files.
markusw··on Show HN: Goqite, a persistent message queue Go library built on SQLite
Well peepz, it’s been fun, but I’m off to bed now because sometimes I get sleepy. Ta! :D

(Thank you for all the comments!)

markusw··on Show HN: Goqite, a persistent message queue Go library built on SQLite
I also don’t like those parts, but for an otherwise great project, I’d happily use the parts I do like. Strict tables go a long way for me, and you can make foreign key checks a compile-time enforcement.

Thank you, I’m really glad you like it! :)
