marklyon··on I Miss Working from the Office
> construction workers their own hammers

Aren't most construction workers expected to provide their own basic tools? The contractor usually provides specialty tools and power tools, but when I did demolition, I certainly brought my own hammer.

marklyon··on US post office carriers "forced to work fewer hours," leaving "buckets of mail"
Are they? How is "detains" and "delays" defined? It doesn't seem like requiring delivery of late-arriving mail on the same day is the intent of that law.

We set it up at our condo building lobby on a nice MFP for anyone to use. Was a great, easy to use solution.

But, if you transition, you lose some significant existing functionality and integration.
marklyon··on The voice from our Nest camera threatened to steal our baby
> In my mind, fully distributed doesn't have to be the goal. I believe the number one problem for getting people to talk to their smart devices are NATs.

Ubiquiti does a good job with this - they provide the interface to get into my equipment remotely with little setup, but don't send the data to their equipment.

I remain miffed by their recent decision to force the blue lights to on with my dropcams. I actually was able to gather critical evidence when cleaners (who were swapped out for my regular people without warning by the cleaning service) decided to search my home and commit identity theft instead of their jobs. They actually picked the dropcam up off the shelf and looked at it - getting a great, clear shot of their faces for the police - then decided it was broken and put it back down instead of destroying or unplugging it. Now, that wouldn't happen. They'd just unplug them or point them elsewhere. They even blink if I decide to look and see what's going on - a clear warning to any well-informed thief.

I miss the old Dropcam. You created something great. Sorry to see the buyers screw things up so badly.

marklyon··on Employer health plans are getting pricier and skimpier
Because you can’t buy true insurance. You are buying a combination of prepaid healthcare - often including things you don’t need - with some insurance features attached.

The i3 does have a center display, but that’s mostly for the infotainment system. The traditional dashboard functions are where you’d expect, right in front of the driver.

Yes, but you risk also blocking the IR illuminators that let it work at night.
marklyon··on Nest Cam status lights can no longer be turned off for privacy
How many cameras do you pass each day that have a glowing/flashing indicator on them? None of the commercial cameras in my workplace or condo building have lights.

This change is extremely frustrating to me. I actually got valuable footage from my Dropcam Pro (now Nest) that I would not have recorded otherwise when someone was admitted to my apartment unsupervised in order to perform a task.

The Dropcam was on a shelf with a lot of other knickknacks and had a great view of my desk, living room and kitchen. The guy actually picked up the camera and called his accomplice over to look. Got a great image of both of them.

The light was off and they decided it was broken or not plugged in and put it back - where I then had a clear view of them collecting my personal documents, mail and financial records so they could take photographs for later use.

After searching, they found where I stored checks and credit cards that weren’t in use. They took random checks out of the checkbook and photographed the front and back of the card.

They then completed the work they’d been sent to do.

I noticed something was amiss when I came home, but nothing was obviously missing. Had I not had the video, the two would never have been arrested and convicted. Those responsible for admitting the duo would also likely have avoided their liability, having clear video of the incident allowed me to quickly resolve that claim (and effectively address the more than $200k in false charges, plus tax fraud, plus identity theft that resulted).

marklyon··on Facebook backtracks after removing Warren ads calling for Facebook breakup
> if Google removed or downgraded search results for Warren - a US senator and presidential candidate - that would be a worldwide scandal.

Would it? A number of Republican candidates note that their email goes straight to spam in Gmail, while messages from Democratic candidates do not, even without any obvious difference in delivery efforts by the sender. Nobody cares.

marklyon··on Minimum-wage worker needs 2.5 full-time jobs to afford a one-bedroom apartment
But, when your union contracts use minimum wage as the base for their calculations, it's far easier to advocate for raising the minimum wage than it is to negotiate a higher multiple, etc.

The contract for the cleaners in my office[1], for example, starts its base wage calculations by adding $0.50 to the minimum wage. All the increases and adjustments begin at that number.

marklyon··on T.S.A. Agents Refuse to Work During Shutdown, Raising Fears of Airport Turmoil
> high on the list of jobs that protect us from terrorism

I'm not certain your statement is accurate. The TSA has itself demonstrated, time and time again, that their accuracy and precision leave much to be desired. If anything, they've been lucky. Terrorism, thankfully, is quite rare.

If anything, I hope the shutdown helps push airports and airlines to seek control of their infrastructure (and, with luck, this administration will help diminish the power of the executive branch in the future).

Sure. I'm a huge fan of "competent professionals doing professional things" youtube. My suggestions are a strange hodgepodge of HVAC repairs, electricians, welders, carpenters and other folks sharing their day-to-day job.
marklyon··on Allegations of overpriced repair charges at Apple Store [video]
Rossman does depot-level repairs. They don't need 10,000 depots. They need a few. They could potentially have someone like him video or phone-linked to stores to answer tough questions (and very well may). They then need good policies and training for the frontline staff to sort out when something can be sent for repair and when it can't. It would also help if they revived SOS-APPL and started making parts easily available.

I suspect it wouldn't take much money at all for Apple to buy Rossman, drop him in a big NYC depot with a Jurassic Park-style viewing window for fanbois to watch things get fixed while he livestreams the repairs, and quickly turn this into a PR win. They could replicate that in several other large cities easily. Will they? Probably not.

marklyon··on A mysterious grey-hat is patching people's outdated MikroTik routers
I'm currently dealing with this from jetigroup.?rg. The registry information is invalid, the contact emails I found for the guy who ran the company at one time bounce back, but a weak password on a mailman install let someone create a distribution list that allows every recipient to post. They broke the unsubscribe part of the script, so nobody can get off the list. Until I made a rule to kill all mail from the domain, the flood of "remove me, I'm contacting the secretary of state" messages were simultaneously hilarious, annoying, and sad.

EVgo CCS for my used BMW was free for the first year and is $99/year after. Not unreasonable.

I've signed up for several other networks, but I prioritize using EVgo and chargepoint since I get "free" sessions on both.
