I mean technically correct. I think cortisol would have been funnier tho.

No I would not make the argument in reverse as you suggested. Not in this context. This is atypical murder. The proliferation of murder is the only metric that matters. This is not your average crime context. It's more or less legitimate businesses/corporations stepping out of legitimate methods. Any murder in this context is noteworthy, an increase points at a catastrophic development of uncontained corporate power. A junkie killig someone in a robbery does not damage the foundations of our current society, where coca cola killing a union worker does. No amount of murder is to be expected, or assumed here, regardless of the activism extend. It's categorically different to "common murder".

Likewise you wouldn't discuss a rise in Al Qaeda terrorist attacks in relation to US population growth, or cartel excutions in relation to Mexico's birth rate. What you are interested in is the number of organized, state-like, violent offenders only, not the pool of their victims.

I hope my point gets across. Not a native speaker.

Thank you for the review.

I am not into voyeurism and sexually liberated enough to feel unashamed watching porn directly for erotic stimulation. So, I am rather looking for insights of a different substance.

Pretty much what I meant :)

BB is the point when TV series started to be seen as superior format for sophisticated story telling. When series became very long movies basically.

Thanks!

I tried PoI, but it didn't catch me (first ep only). Maybe I try again. I would love a good, techy private detective series. Would love to find something like Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, as a series.

For me, in Germany, Breaking Bad was the series which changed the game. After breaking bad, TV became the superior story vessel. There were some good series before, but after BB "everyone" around saw the appeal. It's a different narrative style than traditional TV series. Even gems like Battlestar Galactica, feel more episodically contained and are not bincheable like modern shows. BB wasn't pioneering but rather the turning stone(?), I think.

And yes, I do recommend giving BB another try. It starts so slowly, but it will get insanely intense! However, it's becoming uncomfortably stressful story-wise. If you don't like that sort of drama, you may not enjoy it. Then Better Call Saul is even better, but also even more slow progression. Tho, if you got into the BB style, the wrinting, acting and cinematography are unmatched IMO.

With 6 subjects, it feels a bit silly to even turn on the math. 5% is about two legs of a participant. I think humans can process those low numbers instantly, intuitively; we can do it by pattern recognition, without the need for abstraction. The statistics of a dinner party. I think even some animals could do some "math" on 6 food.

Should be called "collected case studies" or something.

No, it's a cynical question, which derails the conversation into an arbitrary technical debate. It implies/hints at/suggests there is methological issue. Murder is not some statistical event you have to expect, account for.

Language/communication doesn't work the way you argue here. There is context. OP's question would be valid and common for science on e.g. the connection of total brain cancers and smartphone usage.

markenqualitaet··on Record number of environmental activists murdered
Do you recommend it? It's one of the few scifi shows I haven't seen but stumble upon from time to time. It seems a bit low-budget and oldschool TV (pre-breaking bad quality of TV).

I assume you mean the vaccine.

"Long term effects" here doesn't mean what you think it means....

In the past, long term side effects were still occuring with weeks or few month after the shot. However, the statistical signal may be delayed for years or decades to manifest.

It's very hard to think of a way how anything could cause side effect years down the line. Vaccines do not contain beryllium or asbestos. The mRNA vaccines do not even contain mercury or other heavy metals. Mind you, 'none' means less than a can of tuna. They do not remain in the body for long. None of it.

That's why people aren't too worried, rationally. Long term effects whould have shown already.

If you indeed mean COVID, I agree. There may be late long term effects, because of the diffuse organ damage and persistent infections.

Of course any strong immune stimulation may slightly increase or decrease the risk for derailing or aging the immune system. Which may sooner, e.g. autoimmune disease risk, or later, e.g. lymphoma risk, manifest.

For COVID it's a silly debate, because you will get infected or vaccinated in any case.

markenqualitaet··on Moderna Is About to Begin Trials for HIV Vaccine
Idk. The body seems to adapt to radiation and some excess guardian genes may prevent malignant growth. Of course you cannot live through the gamma blast area, but surely the fallout zones may be manageable.

On the other hand chemistry is highly temperature sensitive and at some point proteins will just denature. Then again you cannot have rapid growth without water, as plants need evaporation to transport minerals and such from the soil into the plant. And what about phosphorus anyway? Soon most soils may be nothing but dirt. You cannot work around the phosphorus erosion. Once it's lost, it's lost. We better start recycling our feces and the dead now. You kinda need to harden all life, not just humans and crops.

markenqualitaet··on Moderna Is About to Begin Trials for HIV Vaccine
I assume the effectiveness of PrEP doesn't help the case, as infection can now be prevented for those at high risk.

Might be important to keep an eye out for PrEP access progression and these trails around the world...

markenqualitaet··on Moderna Is About to Begin Trials for HIV Vaccine
I don't think it works this way with HIV. As you stated having immunity to a specific HIV presentation does not prevent infection. Any vaccine effective would need to make the body see a pattern it cannot find on it's own. Something universal to HIV, which cannot be evolved around.

This is different from other disease where the immune system doesn't have enough time to response before the disease kills/damages the body.

If the vaccine can prevent HIV signature evasion, it may very well help control/treat the disease, I think.

Thanks.

You mean e.g. this techy thing at the end of the inlet tube right? It's electrical and only opens when the machine needs water, correct? I think I read a warning about electrical hazards for this plastic tube.

On the downside, this valve probably doesn't allow flushing the inlet with some hypochlorite solution easily... Well knowing the drinking water is safe helps. Hydrogen sulfide is detectable in such low quantities, I am probably stressing over very little contamination anyway.

I wonder if you could reconstruct the whole of "western" civilization just from norms and regulations :)

Y tho? Your advice reads like a recipe for a bad time.

Mitigation is required, if you actually do have something to hide.

Freedom however is endangered, if you personally mitigate this or not. I think for most people the best course of action would be to speak out against this, boycott the companies or get politically active, educate others about the threat to all of us.

And evading hostile tech's reach is really not a practical every day thing. I mean look at the shitshow of browser fingerprinting. Behaving vastly different than most will leave a trace of its own, even if it's just the absence of common information.

The best personal protection is being part of a healthy, democracy valuing collective not okay with this surveillance.

And if you are about to explode the next big story, I would probably advice migrating somewhere hostile to the country you are about to piss off. It's not like they turn on your fridge because you bought LSD for you and your boyfriend; I mean generally buying drugs happens in public Telegram groups these days... Politicians love spending money on surveillance tech, but not law enforcement people. Nothing is gonna happen, if you don't mess with powerful people's egos.

The real damage of these trends is the self censorship and permanent premptive self-surveillance you automatically do in the face of it. Like treating every device as hostile! You are killing off the mental freedom more and more, creativity, possibilities. No one is going all to prison, but no one isn't in prison a little bit.

This made me checking the situation in Germany. Apperently the washing machine needs a backflow protection by law. Not sure mine has one as it's just a simple looking double faucet (washing machine + sink connection). Maybe that's going to the long list of "deadly" oversights by my landlord XD

Either way, I read modern washing machines prevent this also by their own valve systems. Guess that's the fancy thingy at the end of the water connection. Hope that stops whatever is making notable hydrogen sulfide in the freshwater inflow from spreading into my drinking water... What do they even eat??

For real washing machines and fridges are just increasingly disgusting if you start asking questions... Really glad for my immune system.

markenqualitaet··on Tesla valve
Probably a good point. I think I am making the tesla valve more than it is. I am prone to this. Thanks.

With this argument you can dissolve anything in "why even bother?". In the real world it very much makes a difference, if the breach of trust is secretly implementing a side channel, or secretly using a documented one. The latter e.g. can maybe by activated "by accident" plausibly, but having a backdoor at all is hard to justify. And for a company like Apple, the size of a breach of trust matters for financial incentives.
markenqualitaet··on Tesla valve
Does anyone know, if there is research into hygenic aspects of Tesla valves compared to traditional ones? Like biofilm formation experiments?

I was yesterday wondering, if it would make sense to include these into household water piping to ensure mono directional flow, preventing contamination from dirty ends. Doesn't my faucet current create suction on the washing machine's connection? Then again a Tesla valve may be a bio-safespace itself, as there are probably pro-life areas around the turbulences, different water exchange rates and maybe even different gas (oxygen) concentrations.

Also why isn't the cold water line used to dehumidify the shower?

I assume my "smart" ideas about water infrastructure would mostly get me killed by legionella at some point. Excessive regulation on touching the water probably isn't just for killing the fun and creating jobs...

(I recently learned all water pipes are covered in biofilm after 2-3 years, even tho there is hardly any bacteria cell in my country's water. So, there seems to be a disgusting and probably fragile ecosystem to consider...)

markenqualitaet··on Tesla valve
You seem to know a thing or two. Could you point me to an intro for material/physics simulation? Keywords and such? Some basic ideas or even tutorials how this is approached and the common pitfalls?

Is water simulated like gas, sand, or spaghetti? Are internal grid configuration and electromagnetic properties considered usually? Water's chemistry and physics makes it such a special thing, no? What's the scale when things commonly fall apart? Is quantum computation a possible answer to scalability? Can you "divide and conquer" a fluid system? Do real life model measurements tell you much about upscaled applications?

I only know people hate fluid dynamics studying physics and that it's a hard problem.

I think Bangladesh is also scheduled for certain crisis.

And let's be real, no wall (or frontex and the like) will ever keep out billions of people. If the world doesn't get its shit together and respond globally and collaboratively now, this will get ugly beyond imagination and no one, no matter the edgy coldness of their x-first attitude, will come out of this recognizable. People won't just die politely, much less when informed about who's to blame for all this hell.

I think there may be even possible consequences beyond everyone's worst nightmares when we see massive ecosystem collapses. What is it gonna be like, if you have unimaginable fields of mold and bacterial overgrowth? The winds bring Sahara's heavy mineral dust to Europe now, I am sure spores and toxic particles fly much better tomorrow...

markenqualitaet··on Apple Has Opened the Backdoor to Increased Surveillance and Censorship
It is worse tho. The surveillance apparatus doesn't care much about your actual words and images, but your associations and relations. This makes finding needles much more efficient and pre-encryption exfiltration circumvents user added measures, like third party iCloud encryption. And I am pretty sure this will be baked into the OS deeper than your VPN/DNS's reach. Opening up this side channel isn't undone by trusting some "icloud deactivation". Much less in your mind.

To me there is not a single client which isn't off somehow, missing something. I feel like nobody really loves mail client development, because email kinda sucks. Mail just needs to die IMO. You wouldn't design something like email today. I wouldn't want to support all the legacy "features" either. It's a wonder someone is caring about these clients at all.

It's not like mail is going anywhere soon. Look at the fax. There is many decades of infuriating mail client dependecy ahead.

Worse than not using it for navigation is using hjkl for something else. I cannot not press j by accident. Years ago I had to stop using thunderbird for this.

As a Rust beginner, I would never assume code I write to not be executed, or cut out by the compiler. I know this sometimes happens, but I wouldn't count on it for lack of understanding. I don't think that's anyone's expectation who doesn't know the inner workings well, really.
markenqualitaet··on Apple’s Mistake
This only makes sense for non-CSAM data and/or premptive surveillance/policing. Proper criminals/terrorists will evade this by either ... uhm ... disabling this, network filtering this, using Android or no phone at all for their criminal activities... at the very least once you put this pressure on the "market" for a while.

Few people have access to the databases. I would bet quite a bit, this will be used for marking possible offenders of all sorts of crimes and "crimes", e.g. having ISIS propaganda material on your phone, or leaked data. Sometimes you may not even know files to be on your phone. Try exploring Telegram's nearby groups with image autodownload for groups activated and see what happens to your "share recent files" dialoge... It's all porn and nazi memes now!

Overall, I am happy Apple admitted this ultimately, because I was conflicted about buying into the ecosystem for the recent hardware appeal. Not conflicted anymore. Not at all. It's Linux/ASOP or ~~die~~ get stressed out. No M1 benchmark or fancy watch health features can make up for the chronic knot in my stomach using Apple's products; die Schere im Kopf . Hope I find a low latency pen input tablet runnig FOSS Android or Linux, too, as I feel uneasy about journaling or drawing on my iPad now. Thanks Apple, I truly hate you too <3
