Guys, take a look at Mr. Handyman over here, able to do the work of professional HVAC workers in only double the time.

markdown··on Show HN: CheapFoodMap – A map of good meals under $10
You'd have to buy all the domains before starting the poll
markdown··on 7.1 Earthquake in Japan
Earthquakes didn't start in 1991. The Japanese have always had to live with earthquakes and build accordingly.
markdown··on 7.1 Earthquake in Japan
It's Japan though. They don't have non-resistant buildings.

markdown··on French firefighters face 'pyrocumulonimbus' for first time
The pine forests have been there for centuries, so it being pine is no explanation at all for why it's burning so badly now.

markdown··on Government orders GitHub to remove Bluetooth-based chat app Bitchat: Jack Dorsey
Sadly that wasn't possible in the US political climate and maybe a million people lost their lives as a result.
markdown··on IRGC claims it destroyed Amazon's Bahrain data center
I didn't know they had significant fruit production in Russia and Ukraine. What sort of berries do they produce?
markdown··on Businesses with ugly AI menu redesigns
Yes. In some countries, plastic versions of dishes are displayed.

Or the OG, Expert Sex Change.
markdown··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
Nah, it's rare to see [deleted].

More common is seeing "tumble cup and he ran flew tree" due to users using anonymizing apps to remove their old data.

markdown··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
> I used to enjoy reddit back in 2011-2013 when it was all about silly memes and jokes.

Reddit is as it's always been. You just got older and don't get the current silly memes and jokes.

markdown··on Long presumed dead, a thriving coral reef is discovered in West Africa
Don't they just sprout in deeper (cooler) water?
markdown··on Judge approves $1.5B Anthropic settlement for pirated books used to train Claude
Aaron Swartz also intended to offer incredible value for what he took, AND for no personal profit.
markdown··on The EU is about to sell our most sensitive data to the US for visa-free travel
Yes, I know it depends on citizenship. In my country, on top of all the hurdles you mentioned, you have to deposit about $7,000 USD into a US government account as a guarantee that you won't overstay. You get that back when you return to your country. That's new Trump policy that hopefully doesn't outlast his presidency.
markdown··on The EU is about to sell our most sensitive data to the US for visa-free travel
Depends on the country. Eg. New Zealand and Australia don't put a visa sticker in your passport.
markdown··on The EU is about to sell our most sensitive data to the US for visa-free travel
As delusional as thinking the 2nd amendment will help "limit the damage bad actors can do when they are in power".
markdown··on The EU is about to sell our most sensitive data to the US for visa-free travel
> visa (a major hassle) and biometric data passing in the airport (a minor one).

Since US-issued visas are multiple entry for 10yrs, it's relatively not a hassle at all.

markdown··on Hacker wipes Romania's land registry database
That wouldn't be possible in my country because she would not have any right to sell the house until it was transferred to her. This transfer would happen during the probate process. The probate process is where all issues regarding the will/estate and disputes are settled. Once probate is complete, ownership is set in stone and the widow would have every right to sell her house.
markdown··on Hacker wipes Romania's land registry database
wtf
markdown··on Hacker wipes Romania's land registry database
Don't you have a land title, which of course is more evidence than a survey which anyone can pay for and get?
markdown··on Hacker wipes Romania's land registry database
In my country, titles are always issued in duplicate. The land registry gets one of these originals, and the landowner the other. Just about every landowner has their original on their person, or held by a bank if it's mortgaged.

So all is not lost if the registry goes up in flames.

markdown··on Hacker wipes Romania's land registry database
A land title is written on paper or cardboard, with signatures and stamps on it.

The digital copy is just that; a digital copy.

The hacker would have to destroy the database and all backups, and also burn down the building holding the registry.

markdown··on Bananas sprout in Rayleigh Garden UK after 15 years
Ask a 5yr old. They've watched Moana a dozen times and can name a chicken character.
markdown··on Texas wins court order to suspend domain name for violating age-verification law
That's the correct way, because it applies only to residents of that jurisdiction. Texas should be able to prevent their local ISP's from showing illegal content, but not control what people see in other parts of the country/state.
markdown··on Kaiser nurses say AI, workplace surveillance are making their jobs, care worse
If the hospital is owned by private equity, the owners definitely think of the patients as customers. Doctors and nurses shouldn't, but the owners do.
markdown··on Kaiser nurses say AI, surveillance are making their jobs and patient care worse
Bloodletting works well, particularly agains the vapours.
markdown··on 'Likweli': A new monkey species discovered in the Congo Basin
Incredible that that language is still used in 2026.

https://www.audubon.org/news/like-finding-unicorn-researcher...

This article about finding a bird presumed to be extinct for 140yrs is a good example of the local people knowing the bird was there all along, and guiding researchers with cameras to spots where they could find them.

BTW the youtube video on that page of the team in utter jubilation upon seeing the photos in their cameras never fails to make me smile.
