markdown··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
Well hopefully not, because you don't want them pissing and shitting in alleys.

> Instead of politics and blame we need to focus on markets and let them take care of the problem.

The problem is politics and banana republic levels of corruption (aka lobbying) preventing chinese evs to enter the market. If you opened the automotive market to competition ie:

> focus on markets and let them take care of the problem.

then the need for fossil fuels would decline.

markdown··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
Wow, guy on internet solves problem within seconds. And you didn't even have to visit the site. Incredible.
markdown··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
You just charge for it. A dollar per entry should be enough for someone to come by and clean it twice a day, such that it doesn't matter what shenanigans antisocial people get up to in there. No mess will last longer than a few hours.
markdown··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
I visited Hollywood Boulevard once. That was nuts. No public toilets anywhere, in one of the most famous tourist attractions in the country. Worse, food establishments won't let you use the restroom, claiming they have none or that it was out of order.

Thankfully I found one in a cinema.

Odd to list things in reverse order.

This is what was sold to – and often forced on – countries by the US and their allies via the IMF and World Bank. Global free trade meant that you only produced what you had an advantage in and bought what others could produce at lower cost.

> People have much different opinions on what's readable.

Opinions are dime a dozen, but readability (and usability in general) is a well-studied field and having to move your head from side to side to read text that stretches the width of a screen is objectively bad for readability. That's just one example.

And making the website readable for the majority does not prevent one from using the built-in reader or an extension.

I'm almost certain he used to have a reasonably styled website. I just tried to look it up but it looks like he's excluded the website from WayBackMachine.

> Not everybody knows how to use sql or css or java or whatever thing it is that lets you pick the font.

lol at the idea that Dan Luu can't add css to his website by copypasting some links into his html. He could make the site readable in about 3 mins and never have to worry about it again.

BTW this is just the first such library I found. There are lots of 'em, and all very well documented, requiring less knowledge to use than what it takes to publish a blog... which he's mastered.

Nah, he's just trying to be different. It's vanity.

He's had a usable website in the past. This one is explicitly made to be shitty. "Look at me, I'm such a geek" energy.

I agree with you on your point, but I just wanted to let you know that recipes can't be copyrighted.

If you write: "Smash one egg into that bowl and feel the power. Sprinkle salt onto it salt bae style." That's copyrighted and I can't copy that word for word.

But I can publish my own recipe which is an exact copy of yours but written like so:

Ingredients: 1 egg 1 teaspoon salt

Method: Combine egg and salt.

Or write that in any way I want that isn't a word for word copy of your recipe.

I've been looking for a recipe book that my mother used to own called "Taste of the Tropics". Every few years I search online, and while I find a listing from time to time, it's always been "Currently unavailable".

I just searched again now and found 3 used copies on AbeBooks for about US$11 incl. shipping. Absolutely made my day.

I don't know if adult me will enjoy it beyond the nostalgia, but there's a coconut cake recipe in there that I will never forget.

Like you said, just about nobody on planet earth would care if the billionaires ingested and then destroyed those final copies, but I'd have been gutted if they'd beat me to it.

I wouldn't call it a Silicon Valley company. LexisNexis is in headquartered in New York.

> The killer feature of modern watches is the vibration alarm - you can wake up even if you use earplugs/headphones/noise machine and you won't wake up anyone else along with you.

I came here to say exactly this. That's not the reason I bought a smart watch in the first place (I didn't even know that was a feature), but it's the only reason I still use a smart watch now over my old Seiko.

markdown··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
This is bizarre to me. Do you always shop this way? Personally I find a favourite brand and stick with it. There isn't a single product I can think of where I'll buy the same thing from multiple brands.
markdown··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
No, there aren't any Amazon grocery stores in BC.
