markdog12··on Flowers for Algernon (1965) [pdf]
By far the best episode, IMO.
markdog12··on Flowers for Algernon (1965) [pdf]
Incredible story. Would love if anyone has any similar recommendations.

Also read this in one sitting. Couldn't put it down, so thought-provoking.
markdog12··on I designed a cube that balances itself on a corner
Imagine showing Archimedes this device.
markdog12··on Dart/Flutter now has macros/metaprogramming
It does have tuples. They're called records in Dart: https://dart.dev/language/records

Also "destructuring" via patterns: https://dart.dev/language/patterns

markdog12··on Dart/Flutter now has macros/metaprogramming
Not OP, but you're right, it's still an experiment.
markdog12··on Dart/Flutter now has macros/metaprogramming
It also may be getting shared multithreading and related features: https://github.com/dart-lang/language/blob/15ab39175ee00fe88...
markdog12··on Dart/Flutter now has macros/metaprogramming
Examples right in language repo: https://github.com/dart-lang/language/tree/main/working/macr...
markdog12··on WebP is so great except it's not (2021)
Seems Safari has it enabled by default now, and Apple has support at the OS level. Firefox at least has it under a flag. Chrome team are the odd ones out here.
markdog12··on Deno 1.39: The Return of WebGPU
> WebGPU is still considered unstable in Deno. To access it in Deno use the --unstable-webgpu flag
markdog12··on Gemini AI
Still can't use Bard in Canada.
markdog12··on GCP Incidents
Is the port open-source? I'd like to try it, if so.
markdog12··on Reflecting on 18 Years at Google
> Take Jeanine Banks, for example, who manages the department that somewhat arbitrarily contains (among other things) Flutter, Dart, Go, and Firebase. Her department nominally has a strategy, but I couldn't leak it if I wanted to; I literally could never figure out what any part of it meant, even after years of hearing her describe it. Her understanding of what her teams are doing is minimal at best; she frequently makes requests that are completely incoherent and inapplicable. She treats engineers as commodities in a way that is dehumanising, reassigning people against their will in ways that have no relationship to their skill set. She is completely unable to receive constructive feedback (as in, she literally doesn't even acknowledge it).

As someone who's very invested in Dart, this really pisses me off to hear.

I guess that's what this tweet is alluding to: https://twitter.com/timsneath/status/1727192477264974273

markdog12··on WasmGC – Run GC languages such as Kotlin, Java in Chrome browser
Can you clarify?

If you mean compile Dart to WASM, leveraging WasmGC, yes that's being worked on a prototype has been available for months now:

If you mean integrate the Dart runtime into browsers...that ship sailed a long time ago. Wasm is a more flexible way to accomplish that, amongst other reasons.

markdog12··on Talk-Llama
Got stuck on the model same as you did. No idea what model to use, not interested in fighting with Python to convert the models.

I was able to get llama.cpp itself to work, though, including image analysis.

markdog12··on 32 MiB Working Sets on a 64 GiB machine
He reported it in the best way possible. We all know what would have happened if he filed a bug report (especially if they didn't realize it was him).
markdog12··on Why are websites requesting access to motion sensors on my desktop? (2019)
> "Why does a browser need to give access to a serial port"

Why does a program need to give access to a serial port?

> if you asked the average internet user 20 years ago if their browser should provide websites with access to their serial ports, you'd get laughed at

What if you included "Only if you allow it"?

markdog12··on Why are websites requesting access to motion sensors on my desktop? (2019)
You have to explicitly grant permission for a site to use a serial port.
markdog12··on Haskell WebAssembly in the Browser
It's already in Phase 4, so close: https://github.com/WebAssembly/proposals#phase-4---standardi...
markdog12··on Dart 3.1 and a retrospective on functional style programming in Dart
Which of its tools are opinionated and how? Do you mean the formatter, perhaps?
markdog12··on IntelliJ IDEA 2023.2
It has always been very slow to me, very frustrating software to use.
markdog12··on JPEG XL: How it started, how it’s going
The image formats (at least newer ones) in Safari defer to OS support, so you'll need Sonoma to view JXL in Safari.
markdog12··on Apple Vision Pro Is Apple's New VR Headset
Starts at $3500 USD.
markdog12··on Nginx 1.25.0: experimental HTTP/3 support
Update: nginx:1.25 up now.
markdog12··on Bringing the power of AI to Windows 11
Interesting, thx! Fingers crossed, as zstd is awesome.
markdog12··on Nginx 1.25.0: experimental HTTP/3 support
Any docker images for this? I noticed there is no official one: https://hub.docker.com/_/nginx/
markdog12··on Nginx 1.25.0: experimental HTTP/3 support
Well, HTTP 3 is standardized off the initial QUIC implementation (UDP), yes.

Update: I guess, technically, HTTP 3 is the protocol built on top of the QUIC protocol.

markdog12··on Bringing the power of AI to Windows 11
What about zstd?

Update: looks like no: https://github.com/libarchive/libarchive/wiki/LibarchiveForm... :(

markdog12··on Bevy and WebGPU
Yeah, MUCH better now.
