mariorz··on Singapore and its lack of Democracy
>BTW, there are no true democracies in the world today as far as I know. Thank goodness.

So what's the difference between a representative republic and a democracy? Are you actually actually saying that for a country to be democratic all government decisions would have to be made by everyone?

mariorz··on Y Combinator To Offer Standardized Angel Funding Legal Docs
I agree, didn't intend for it to come off as a complaint, was more curious than anything. Now I'm even more curious though.
mariorz··on Y Combinator To Offer Standardized Angel Funding Legal Docs
The article links to the ycombinator homepage, I see no legal docs there. Am I missing something?
mariorz··on Singapore and its lack of Democracy
I meant "free-market" in the sense of the cost of switching governments you mentioned. Switching governments was just not an option.

Side note: Díaz probably did some expropriations but at least not the biggest ones. Those where done during Lazaro Cardenas´s presidency.

mariorz··on Singapore and its lack of Democracy
Thanks for the link and those stats are indeed incredible. It's worth pointing out, however, that low crime-rates and economic prosperity are not at all uncommon in dictatorships. Examples I'm familiar with include Porfirio Diaz in Mexico or more recently Pinochet in Chile. In those cases, though, there where no "free-market" forces at play as people could not easily move to other countries.
mariorz··on Singapore and its lack of Democracy
I don't think this article is particularly good, but I've always wondered how people come to accept living without certain freedoms, so I found it interesting in this regard.
mariorz··on Hello darkness my old friend
I don't think Apple is as pressed to fight this war as DirecTV was.

Also you can jailbreak the thing without additional hardware which wasn't possible in the DirecTV scenario. I doubt that we'll see jailbroken iphones going away anytime soon, the process is becoming effortless even for non-hacker types and the benefits are obvious (even if you've never heard of Freedom 0).

mariorz··on What a Jakob Nielsen designed WinAmp skin would look like
It actually looks better than 99% of the WinAmp skins I remember.
mariorz··on Hello darkness my old friend
iPhone owners who do care about Freedom 0 will just jailbreak the thing though.
mariorz··on Ask YC: Hecl language syntax?
I'm not part of the "syntax doesn't matter" camp either. Since Hecl (I think) is partly intended to use for coding directly from phones with crappy screens/keyboards, for me at least, syntax would be especially important there. Not so much that it would be familiar, but that it would be as concise as possible.

mariorz··on Can Indian Society produce Gates/Larry/Zuckerberg?
Even so the case is a joke. He stole the code he wrote himself? I think allegedly he didn't honor a verbal agreement to write a site for the connectU founders, that is very different from someone "stealing the code" and it's silly to even consider FB's success and CU's lack there of is due to the fact that they launched a month or two earlier.

In any case, I was responding to jrockway's comment "someone who steals his employer's idea and makes billions off it".

mariorz··on Can Indian Society produce Gates/Larry/Zuckerberg?
This is stupid and that case is a sad joke. I don't see how the idea could have been stolen since Friendster, Myspace and probably some others existed before FB.
mariorz··on Is it lame to want to know why you got modded down?
I really think it would be better if we just got rid of karma per user or at least get rid of the leader board. It just encourages karma whoring and ends being counterproductive. Slashdot figured this out a long time ago.
mariorz··on Facebook Connect Will Be Game-Changing...and Dangerous
"The problem with Grand Unified Login Theory is that it often goes against the primary goal of having your own web service which is to build your own user base. In the long run your user base is worth more if it is uniquely yours as opposed to just being a subset of someone else's user base"

Why? The value of your "userbase" is not in your DB table, it's the users who interact with your service and arguably find it useful or fun. For many types of apps, allowing the user to interact with their friends is extremely important in achieving the above.

I don't really get your "flu" analogy, maybe you can say what you mean, are you literally worried about FB's downtime affecting your web service? that could be a valid concern for some web apps, I guess, realistically not for most.

mariorz··on On Math Teaching: Lockhart's Lament
"It's amazing how many people don't know the very basics of it like, for instance, how multiplication is just a compact way of expressing a repetitive sum."

You mean to say, of course, that many people usually think this is so, while it being obviously wrong... right?

Otherwise, my friend, I think you should forget all about what your elementary school teacher said and re-examine say multiplication of fractions for starters.

mariorz··on Facebook Connect Will Be Game-Changing...and Dangerous
Well, the problem they're addressing is going to be solved somehow by someone, it will probably be either this or openid and xfn. I think FB has head start so far.

Passport btw, offered no benefits really for app developers, not the same case here.

mariorz··on Video Streaming over BitTorrent networks
The url is information I use when deciding to click or not, especially if you're linking to non-html files. More importantly whats the point? Nobody is getting charged by the character here. It's a terribly annoying custom probably encouraged by that twitter app.
mariorz··on Video Streaming over BitTorrent networks
Yes they modified the bittorent protocol, article talks about it, it remains backward compatible though (for non-live streams).

On a different note, please cut it out with the tinyurls (not just you everyone), needless obfuscation of usable information makes no sense.

mariorz··on Game Developer Salaries From H1-B Data
linkage?
mariorz··on Game Developer Salaries From H1-B Data
I would think companies like H1-Bs because it allows a bigger talent pool to choose from, not because they can exploit foreign workers more easily.
mariorz··on Who's Going to Fund the Next Steve Jobs?
He did get funded, but is he really in it for the long run? My uninformed prediction on the matter is loopt gets acquired by MS in a few years, which does seem to be the goal of most startups these days.

Yeah, and according to the linked wiki article secondary ion mass spectrometry has been around for a while.
mariorz··on Guido on the fate of Lambda, map() and filter(), and reduce() in Python 3000
I still think the list comprehension is clearer than:

map(str, filter(lambda x: x%2 is 0, range(100)))

mariorz··on Guido on the fate of Lambda, map() and filter(), and reduce() in Python 3000
I don't think the "x for x" is repetitive. It's there for the cases you mention. e.g.

[str(x) for x in range(100) if x%2 is 0]

VS

map(lambda x: str(x), filter(lambda x: x%2 is 0, range(100)))
