mariopt··on The Rise of the Bullshittery
Great article
mariopt··on Show HN: Gigacatalyst – Extend your SaaS with an embedded AI builder
Doing this with the AI generating the backend is definitely going to be challenging, it's essentially the user vibecoding operations that mutate data and hoping for the best.

When I envisioned this, I though about this being more frontend focused by having UI components/sections that disclosure which actions (endpoint calls) they can access. This would be virtually risk free.

But I supposed you guys are trying to solve a much bigger problem then.

mariopt··on Show HN: Gigacatalyst – Extend your SaaS with an embedded AI builder
I agree that is part of the future of AI, you describe what kind of UI you need and the app generates a combination of UI components to match your needs.

I expect this to be a simple NLP mapping via local/cloud AI model to a JSON/DSL that describes the interface. Naturally, this won't work well for complex UI that are context aware but will do well for most simple apps/dashboards.

My question is: How do you plan to make this a business?

mariopt··on AMÁLIA and the future of European Portuguese LLMs
This model is a waste of Public Funds.

There is no public website to use it, be it free or paid, the dataset is not public, the code is not public (The github URL in the article returns 404 ), the claimed model intelligence is so low that is pretty much useless at 32K context and massively inferior to GPT‑4o.

As per tradition in Portugal, some people managed to get 5.5 Million to produce nothing and no one is asking questions.

You want a better idea? Just fine tune the open source Kimi 2.6 with an open source Portuguese dataset, the cost would be under a million and we would be getting something useful.

It would be really nice to know what happened to 5.5 Millions whilst not being able to even provide a functional website to use the model.

mariopt··on Software engineering may no longer be a lifetime career
Why are we upvoting this?

Virtually, the entire blog is about AI with a ridiculous publishing rate (https://www.seangoedecke.com/page/5), funny how I can look at this site HTML and know right away it was done with AI.

Can we stop upvoting vibe published articles? The arguments are flawed and don't even make sense to anyone who does software

mariopt··on Cloudflare Pages is down in Spain
I though that but *.workers.dev is resolving but my domain is not. Are they blocking DNS servers IPs now?
mariopt··on Cloudflare Pages is down in Spain
Seems like DNS, what's even more frustrating is not getting any visibility on what is happening. Went to CF discord and they're not happy about me pinging the people with the CF tag.

Guess they don't mind about downtime but my customers do

mariopt··on Cloudflare Pages is down in Spain
You may not see it on the dashboard but all my sites are unreachable. I used a 3rd party website screenshot and it may be working in some countries.
mariopt··on DeepSeek v4
Does deepseek has any coding plan?
mariopt··on DeepSeek 4 Launched
It's the model marketing page for Hong Kong, they've link to a web ui where you can test the model.
mariopt··on Kimi K2.6: Advancing open-source coding
Really excited to try this one, I've been using kimi 2.5 for design and it's really good but borderline useless on backend/advanced tasks.

Also discovered that using OpenCode instead of the kimi cli, really hurts the model performance (2.5).

mariopt··on Migrating from DigitalOcean to Hetzner
Every time I see this kind of article, no one really bothers about sb/server redundancy, load balancers, etc. are we ok with just 1 big server that may fail and bring several services down?

You saved a lot of money but you'll spend a lot of time in maintenance and future headaches.

mariopt··on Building a SaaS in 2026 Using Only EU Infrastructure
The EU providers are simply not on par with AWS, CloudFlare, GCP, etc.

Yes, you can get cheap servers but then you've to self-host and manage a bunch of services that you could get for pennies on the dollar in AWS.

There are hundreds of datacenter providers and yet, most are absolute garbage when it comes to customer support, problem resolution, you get really old hardware, many times you have to send an email and wait weeks because they don't have a self-service UI, SLA is a joke, etc.

You can do it, it's just gonna be a nightmare and you'll spend more time/money on it.

mariopt··on Tell HN: Anthropic no longer allowing Claude Code subscriptions to use OpenClaw
Last week Z.ai coding plan was unusable due to a lot of people abusing the coding plan with OpenClaw. This can be verified: https://openrouter.ai/z-ai/glm-5-turbo

OpenClaw managed to burn 2.46 trillion tokens just in the last 30 days.

I'm not even gonna judge why someone needs an AI Assistant running 24/7, the core issue is that coding plans are being ruined because they're not paying for ridiculous amount of tokens burned.

Anthropic is actually making the right decision: You want a LOT of tokens for your 24/7 agent? Ok, just use the API and pay for your tokens.

I enjoy paying for a sub that I actually use to code, and what we pay today is not even enough to cover the costs of running AI servers.

mariopt··on Tech employment now significantly worse than the 2008 or 2020 recessions
The market in the EU is strange, it doesn't matter where you live. Every role is being advertised as a remote one, over 200+ applicants and it's virtually impossible to get noticed.

I blame this on people spamming fake AI CVs 24/7, no one is going to review hundreds of CVs.

mariopt··on Tech employment now significantly worse than the 2008 or 2020 recessions
EU/UK
mariopt··on Tech employment now significantly worse than the 2008 or 2020 recessions
For the last 2 years I can't even get an interview despited having 14 years of experience and being up to date with development trends, libraries, languages, AI tooling, etc.

I don't think the market is flooded with new devs as many state, I think we are in a deep silent crisis

mariopt··on Show HN: OpenWorkers – Self-hosted Cloudflare workers in Rust
I think it would be worth it to keep the D1 compatibility, Sqlite and Postgres have different SQL dialects. Cloudflare has Hyperdrive to keep the connection alive to Postgres/other dbs, what D1/libSql/Turso brings to the table is the ability to run a read/write replica in the machine, this can dramatically reduce the latency.
mariopt··on Show HN: OpenWorkers – Self-hosted Cloudflare workers in Rust
Amazing work!

I have been thinking exactly about this. CF Workers are nice but the vendor lock-in is a massive issue mid to long term. Bringing D1 makes a lot of sense for web apps via libSql (SQLite with read/write replicas).

Do you intended to work with the current wrangler file format? Does this currently work with Hono.js with the cloudflare connector>

mariopt··on Floor796
The artwork looks amazing, is it AI/ComfyUI?
mariopt··on Unifi Travel Router
It would be super convenient, given it's size, for me to purchase a eSim card abroad with unlimited data and not having to drain my phone battery.

This is a travel router.

mariopt··on Unifi Travel Router
This won’t replace my GL-AXT1800 which offers a lot more flexibility.

Unifi shipping without eSIM support is a big mistake imo. I don’t want to have a 5g router(which are insanely expensive) or a second smartphone with 5G.

mariopt··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Hi Peter, thank you for doing this AMA.

How can an European Senior SWE land a job, let’s say, SF and have some kind of guarantee regarding the visa before flying into the US.

The 100K cost for the H-1B is so absurd that it crushes any hope of me ever participating in Silicon Valley or any other tech hub in the US. Is the tech alive or are companies just relocating to EU/others?

mariopt··on Trillions spent and big software projects are still failing
> IT projects suffer from enough management hallucinations and delusions without AI adding to them.

Software is also incredibly hard, the human mind can understand the physical space very well but once we're deep into abstractions it simply struggles to keep up with it.

It is easier to explain how to build a house from scratch to virtually anyone than a mobile app/Excel.

mariopt··on I don’t need a Steam Machine
Games being optimised for specific hardware.

Some games just run better on the PS when compared to the PC version, regardless of you having the latest and best PC. You can see this fairly well on the Nintendo Switch, which is a low spec tablet but the games run very well and the experience is great.

PC Games, generally speaking, tend to favor keyboard and mouse not controllers.

This is why I suspect game devs will start optimising for the Steam Machine, provided it sells well.

mariopt··on Do not put your site behind Cloudflare if you don't need to
Fair point but you also get exposed if the dns provider has an outage.

Self hosting will also bring its own set of problems and costs.

mariopt··on Do not put your site behind Cloudflare if you don't need to
Enterprise self hosting is an expensive nightmare for most companies. I think it is time to discuss multi cloud deployments to escape outages.

I am hosted on Cloudflare but my stack is also capable of running on a single server if needed, most libraries are not design with this in mind.

I’m also wondering if all these recent outages are connected to cyber attacks, the timing is strange.

mariopt··on I don’t need a Steam Machine
Steam Machines can become an existencial crisis for PlayStation and Xbox.

A “console” that I can use as a PC? I am in 100%. You’ll get the world biggest game library at a discount, this is why I sold my PlayStation after spending 200 euros and watching it becoming useless.

I also suspect a lot of game devs will optimize for steam machine and finally we’ll get a console like experience on PC.

Don’t let the “low specs” fool you, it has the same specs or better as 70% of steam users.

Given Valve gave money to a lot of open source maintainers , it’s also great for Linux.

Just take my money

mariopt··on Ryanair tries forcing app downloads by eliminating paper boarding passes
The online check-in opens 48 hours before the flight and you get a notification, no reason to delay this and your life harder inside the airport and potentially lose your flight.

Still confused about the no paper thing, you could print the digital pass given It has the gate qr code

mariopt··on Ryanair tries forcing app downloads by eliminating paper boarding passes
To be honest, I don’t think you’ll need to use the app. I get my passes via email and add them to Apple Wallet.

In some airports, printing the pass is actually free, they have a dedicated vending machine just for this.

They are not saying that you can not print the pass yourself, I suspect this move will save a lot of time and money which, ultimately, is a good thing for everyone.

They want to charge a check-in fee if you don’t do it online, I would not be surprised if they have a lot of people wasting time doing it in-person instead of doing it online. This could speed customer who actually have luggage.

What am I missing?
