mariocesar··on Malleable Software
I've been in SaaS for about 17 years, and a pattern I've seen is that for companies customers actually love, customization shows up as a milestone. It helps them find their own way of doing things, but eventually they settle into that way.

When it resonates with customers, it feels great.

Customizable SaaS is really just a side effect of the deeper need for control, because with control you can execute better. And when that lines up with capital, market fit, and a clear purpose, it creates more than efficiency, it creates meaning.

The companies that never settle, always chasing new patterns, usually end up with customers who don't enjoy them and employees who don't enjoy the software either.

mariocesar··on Ask HN: Would you get a CS degree today?
If the goal is to learn about computer science, then yes absolutely. However, if the goal is to better one's chances of securing a meaningful and well-paid job, the answer is no.

I used ChatGPT for that and it worked fine, you can even take screenshots and tell it to create the YAML config file for you

If you're curious, the code in ellipsis results in executing:

mariocesar··on Show HN: I Built a Tool to Find Devs Based on Code, Not LinkedIn Titles
When I search for "City, Country," I can find my profile, but searching for just "Country" doesn't work.

This is a good idea, but it needs more work on how to tokenize and index the profiles. Are you just using the API? or storing the profiles? because API for exact matches misses a lot of profiles. The location field in GitHub has been always been inconsistent, some people use country flag emojis instead of names, or just abbreviations like AR, BO, or USA, etc

mariocesar··on Using fake deadlines without driving your engineers crazy
Wow, this hits close. When I was managing teams, I put a lot of effort into making deadlines clear, measurable, fair, etc. I personally use Deadlines for everything, maybe is the ADHD coping I have the reason I like dates a lot, but is not the same when I work with others in a team

I thought I was helping my team with structure, clarity, direction. But looking back, even though we all wanted to do good work and move forward, and genuinely care about each other, something always felt off. There was this tension around "dates". I felt it. The team felt it. And we quietly resent them

Years later, I stop managing and become part of a team again, and I saw another manager approach deadlines totally differently. She talked about deadlines as "things that happen" you wanted or not, almost like happy accidents. The real focus was on creating an effect. That shift in language unlocked something for me. Deadlines became markers to check if we were moving forward, making the impact we wanted, not pursuing goals. That change made everything feel sane and more honest, and give more room to be ambitious. The day to day was the same but different, we checked whether what we were doing was aligned, and deadlines where just times to "measure" how things were going, so deadlines was something we wait for, and they were easier to negotiate, because if you have the effect or goal in mind, you move deadlines to match the outcomes we wanted, and not just avoid the deadline themselves

It's not directly on the post, but the idea is similar: it's better to use deadlines as measurement tools rather than a time to do judgment. Better to build trust through alignment and purpose.

mariocesar··on Plain – a web framework for building products with Python
I've some mixed feelings about this fork. On the one hand, I get the motivations, there is alway a lot of value in experimenting outside of a legacy project. But at the same time, I cant help but feel uneasy seeing something I've deeply respected and used on for years being split off in this way, "fork of Django" is a big statement.

Part of that discomfort comes from a sense that the collective effort into Django is being sidestepped rather than built upon. It feels like a "saas-fication" effort, like Ruff, Docker, Terraform, etc but instead of going from creating something new it replaces something that already works. I worry about the potential for a more commercial or narrow direction that doesn't embody honestly the open, thoughtful mission thats made Django so special.

I'm in love of boring software.

I care about Django more than I realized. Seeing this has actually pushed me with a gut emotion to want to get more involved contributing code, writing, or just participating more with Django

It's not about the tool or the language, I want to feel different about the community that is open and respectful of contribution and values long term relations.

It's not fun to be boring, but boring is good

Im really happy to hear from you and from Django Ninja!

First off, I just want to say how grateful I am for your work. I know how challenging it can be to maintain opensource projects, and I truly appreciate the effort

Wishing you all the best.

This is a bit unrelated, but something thats been on my mind, how are things for you with everything going on in Ukraine? I cant imagine how difficult it must be to deal with such situation while also staying active in open source

mariocesar··on Show HN: FastOpenAPI – automated docs for many Python frameworks
Not a technical reason: I've been using Django Ninja to medium/big app with lot of validation logic, and it was a delight. It was easy to start and integrates well with Django, but I'm moving away from it, not because I dislike it, I still like the approach and ergonomics. However, the project seems somewhat abandoned or at least struggling with updates (last release is in August 2024) and with lots of PRs staled. There are forks like django-shinobi https://github.com/pmdevita/django-shinobi that are moving forward and have releases

Right now I'm shifting to FastAPI + Django since much of my logic is already in Pydantic classes, and authentication is token based, so FastAPI mainly is a wrapper for my Django app. Still, it doesn't feel ideal. I would prefer to use django-shinobi, but when I first try to migrate to FastAPI I did it most of the hard stuff in a day

If you're considering options, I recommend giving django-shinobi a try. I hope it gains more traction and involves more maintainers.

It's a shame that some comments in the original post are so toxic and unwelcoming. There are plenty of empathetic people on HN. Well HN is welcome if at least when the topic isn't website standards or a page failing to load in some commenter obscure browser.

mariocesar··on Google's Chrome extension cull hits more uBlock Origin user
uBlock Origin still works with the latest version of Arc Browser. However, when you go to the extension store, it shows a warning that it will not be supported in future.

Arc Browser uses uBlock Origin natively, so I assume they will "patch" it or find a workaround to keep it working

mariocesar··on SaaS Idea Validation
I like the site, but it would be great to have a presentation and summary of what you're trying to validate.
mariocesar··on Okta Bcrypt incident lessons for designing better APIs
Regarding the API design, I agree now with OP after reading other comments on HN. The API would be improved if it clearly indicates to the user when truncation is done, even if this understanding is implied by principle.
mariocesar··on Okta Bcrypt incident lessons for designing better APIs
I'm confused, it seems that the OP wants to use Bcrypt as an encoding/decoding utility.

About solutions, Django hashes by default the password only with a salt. I'm not sure why it would be valuable to combine user_id+username+password. I've always assumed that using salt+password was the best practice.

Not available for Bolivia!

Currently, we have restrictions, as there’s a limit of 50 USD on USD transactions per week for each bank. There is a constant growing interest in USDT and crypto here, especially since the middle class is quite aware of it due to the limited availability of USD in the country! It would be nice to explore this further, but it's a bit disappointing that it's not an option right now :/

mariocesar··on Tinystatus: A tiny status page generated by a Python script
Yea, you can create a website on S3 and set up a Lambda trigger every minute. To schedule this, you can use a CloudWatch rule with a 'Schedule' expression to trigger the Lambda function.

Alternatively, you could use GitHub Actions and schedule the workflow to run every minute.

However, I prefer the Lambda approach.

mariocesar··on Show HN: Ruroco – like port knocking, but better
I know a guy who works as an IT consultant for a local telecom company. This is what he does: He calls up the data center and says he needs to connect to a server. The support staff there physically walks into the server room grabs an UTP cable and connects a router directly to the blade server. The router then assigns an IP with all ports wide open—no firewall, no nothing. An hour or so later, the support guy calls back to see if the work is done and then unplugs the cable. And that's their whole security protocol
