mario0b1··on Invisible Manipulation: ways our data is being used against us
>Soon the default will shift from us interacting directly with our devices to interacting with devices we have no control over and no knowledge that we are generating data.

That's already the case. The big problem is that no one cares about it, because it seems like everything just work fine. I don't know and I can't tell if bad things will happen to us with our data everywhere, but it's possible. But how could we possibly convince "normal" people that giving your data out for free is bad?

mario0b1··on How to Get Things Done When You Don't Feel Like It
These are really really good!

I can add a few, which helped me a lot through my depression and getting things done in general:

- Plan your breaks: "I'll do one hours of this and then have a quick break and go for a walk"

- Set yourself rewards. It doesn't matter how tiny they are, but - atleast for me - they are effective: "When I finish this today I'll get a nice meal at my favorite restaurant".

- Set yourself a time limit. This goes more or less with the one above. Set yourself some time limit that you'll only work til something like 5pm and then enjoy your free time. It doesn't matter if you have finished your work today or not. Maybe it wasn't even possible to finish it in one day at the first place. Plus what helps me a lot is, if you don't finish your current task in time make a quick bullet list for your task for next day. Be realistic and start with super simple goals.

mario0b1··on The death of Google
Maybe some time will come where they go from fashion-only-brand to consumer and/or budget brand? Sure it could hurt their image, but if they keep going into that privacy direction it could possibly give them A LOT more customers, who just can't (or don't want to) afford apple right now.

> I would use it if they change their name. Sure, the name might not be the catchiest one, but shouldn't be things like ethics, usability/functionality and so on way above this? Dropping something because it has a bad name seems odd. Even if it has a ""bad"" name, people would come up with a catchy phrase for it sooner or later. It just has to get rolling - for which the name might be contra productive, that's right.
mario0b1··on A guide to proper use of animation in UX
- huge sticky header

- some sticky like and share feature on the side

- weird contrasts which are not comfy for the eyes

- too many animations (this might not count at all)

This sums up most things I hate about modern web pages actually. Why use all these things? Especially huge sticky headers are just super annoying. Please don't use them. Thanks.

mario0b1··on A $1, Linux-Capable, Hand-Solderable Processor
Getting a lot of drivers, a functioning network stack and all those other neat things in one package is really comfortable. And if it is connected to the internet (and an actual product) it might need an update, which should be easier to do with a full-fledged system underneath it then writing everything yourself. Sure it is overkill for a lot of stuff, but as IoT grows by the second there are more than enough use cases for embedded linux

despite being unable to disagree with you there still might be a few hardcore hobbyist hackers outside who still want to get such a task done just for the sake of it. As long as it makes fun, right? You don't always have to achieve useful stuff. Also getting something like this done might not even be useless. It trains a lot of skills nevertheless.

PS: Don't take hackaday articles too serious, there are some really really talented people among that community and it is always great to see if someone gets some really great (over)engineering done.

mario0b1··on How work kills us
This passage made me appreciate germanys health care. You can think of germany whatever you want, but the easy access to health care is super glorious. I think a lot of people that live here are not aware of it, because it just happens to be there and they don't have to think about it. The past 2 1/2 years i had to go to so many doctors and I was just happy to live in a country with absolutely beautiful healthcare. But maybe it is bad how the german health system works and I just have been lucky. It's possible, but I don't think so.
