maresca··on Ask HN: What are you working on right now and why is it cool?
Flocal : http://goflocal.com - Craigslist meets Tinder

It's a lot better than craigslist. It's quicker and easier to use. Immediately see how far away a post is. There's no registrations or signins. Every post has a pic and location, so you won't see a lot of the junk you see on craigslist where someone posts something with no map, no pic, and no address in the post.

maresca··on The First Browser Dedicated to Developers Is Coming
Is there a firefox plugin that lets me edit CSS in the developer tools AND lets me save the edits back to the actual CSS stylesheet on my machine? I'd love to see that functionality.
maresca··on Final – A credit card built for the 21st century
What happens when your generated number matches an existing number? Is there a finite amount of possible CC numbers?

maresca··on Apple’s “warrant canary” disappears
Perhaps this is the reason for all of the security updates in iOS 8.
maresca··on Verizon offers free iPhone 6 with trade-in, 2-year contract
Yeah, and for those of us that are grandfathered into unlimited data, we'd lose our unlimited contract while upgrading. I'll stick with my 4S so I don't get squeezed per gig.
maresca··on Traction Book – A Startup Guide to Getting Customers
I just finished this book the other day. Great book! As a developer, I'm usually deep in code so I'm not the best at sales and marketing. The book has great examples of what others have done to get traction. My biggest takeaway was that the book helped me get into the sales/marketing mindset which helped generate a few ideas of my own.
maresca··on Common App Rejections
I wonder how often apps are rejected and how often they get through for this rule. I'd much rather use an app that uses my ID instead of making me sign up/sign in. It also makes it easier to stop people from posting crap in your app than if you assigned ids on your own.
maresca··on Hyperlapse, Instagram's new video stabilization app
Some of the smaller shops including solo founders and two man teams only have the resources to build one app at a time. If they're building something in their spare time, it's even harder.
maresca··on Applications for YC W15 are open
What if you're a solo founder that has a cofounder lined up but are waiting for the right catalyst to bring them aboard? What if you're solo but have been contracting out the areas where you need help?
maresca··on Ask HN: Show us your abandoned (and probably incomplete) side projects
Poemr: http://poemr.com A suite of tools for writing and publishing anonymous poetry. People still use it from time to time, but not a lot.

LottoLane: http://lottolane.com A lottery pool management tool. Built this to use at work. We used it a few times and it works well. I just never marketed it that much.

maresca··on Google Analytics iOS app
Good. Now maybe they'll release an iOS version of Keep.
maresca··on Show HN: Checkr.io – API for background checks
I see nothing in there having to do with criminal charges. Only credit and financial records. Am I missing something?
maresca··on Ask HN: REJECTED. Would you be willing to contract-to-hire?
It depends on the size of the company and the types of questions you are asking. Larger companies move slower and are more apt to hire people of all skill levels. Smaller companies need rockstars that will sling great code fast.

Depending on the questions, you may be asking things that don't apply. How much did the puzzles apply to your every day coding tasks? Some people don't do well interviewing or at puzzle questions but can still churn out some great finished products. You won't know until you actually try them out in the position.

maresca··on Ask HN: How do I work on startup ideas while working in industry?
Make sure you aren't violating any non-compete agreements with your new employer. Also make sure they don't have any clauses in your employment agreement where they claim ownership of your projects. Read the fine print. If you're really concerned, ask someone there. That should be easy if you've worked there before.
maresca··on Driver caught using cell phone jamming device
Downvotes for an unpopular opinion. Keep up the good work hacker news!
maresca··on Driver caught using cell phone jamming device
A very valid point. I wonder what people did before all of these wonderful gadgets. Enjoy the scenery?
maresca··on Driver caught using cell phone jamming device
I actually don't, but that's mainly to make my battery last. I get what you're saying though.
maresca··on Driver caught using cell phone jamming device
My opinion is probably in the minority on this issue, but I think cell phones should be disabled by default near vehicles(Except for emergency services). As a stick-driver and motorcyclist, I see way too many distracted drivers. People will miss lights, swerve, and worse because of their cell phones.

The one thing that will help reverse this trend will be self-driving cars.

maresca··on Outbox vs. USPS: How the Post Office Killed Digital Mail
I hate to be that guy but if you popup a dialog as soon as I visit a site, I immediately click the back button.
maresca··on Ask HN: Screenshot Saturday
I agree. I'm using bootstrap for the layouts, so it should translate to mobile fairly easily. The nice thing is the players in a pool won't have to sign up. Only the lottery pool manager has to sign up. It's pretty convenient. We have a pool at work but aren't allowed to use our work emails for it. So this was born out of necessity.

LottoLane / http://www.lottolane.com

Lottery Pools for the 21st Century. LottoLane handles all aspects of lottery pools. Keep friends/family/colleagues in the loop with upcoming drawings. Track who has paid to play. Share pics of tickets with pool members. Find out if you've won instantly after a drawing without checking the numbers yourself.

maresca··on Ask HN: Payment Processor for a banned business model.
We'd rather not take checks/wire transfers. Our site digitizes the whole lottery pool process. It wouldn't align with our goals to force users to use checks/wire transfers.

This was what I was looking for. Thanks. I've only looked at well-known providers so far. I have a lot more research to do.

maresca··on Ask HN: Payment Processor for a banned business model.
That will definitely be an option at some point. I just don't want to turn away any potential customers because they don't have bitcoin.
maresca··on Ask HN: What side projects are you working on?
Here's a site that sells lotto tickets online:

https://www.lottoland.com/en

Legality of doing something like this is questionable. Plus, there's the issue of trusting the site if the ticket hits the jackpot. I believe they have people that physically go to convenience stores to buy the tickets for you.

I do have some ideas of how to facilitate playing in pools without having to be geographically close to the pool manager. But, overall, the pool manager should be someone you know.

maresca··on Ask HN: What side projects are you working on?
http://lottolane.com

LottoLane is a lottery pool management tool. It will handle email invites/reminders, payment tracking, sharing pics of tickets, and more. It will take care of everything involved in a lottery pool except for buying tickets.

maresca··on Ask HN: What has recently pissed you off that ideally a product could solve?
Lottery Pools.

The lottery pool manager where we work keeps a physical list of who has paid up. Email invites were being sent through our company emails, but the higher-ups put the squash on that. She then scans the tickets, makes copies, and hands them out.

I decided to build something that would automate all of this except the buying of tickets.

maresca··on The simple genius of Flappy Bird
His rise in the app store is questionable. He most likely gamed the app store using bots.
maresca··on This Man's $600K Facebook Disaster Is a Warning For All Small Businesses
I'd agree right up until the point where he went to Facebook HQ in Toronto for training on the ads. If it were someone wasting a few grand, I'd understand. Once someone is actually trained in a certain product by the company selling it, wastes half a million, and sees this kind of result, it crosses over to the realm of fraudulent.
