marcofloriano··on The Self-Employed Are the Happiest
It´s just a survey, but one thing we can conclude by the data: those who earn more, "think" they are more happy. And those who earn less, "think" they are less happy.

The point is, what is happiness ? By these numbers, happiness comes from money and by my personal experience (could be wrong), happiness don´t have anything with money. Maybe joy, satisfaction and fun have, but not true happiness. So the article could be entitled as: The Self-Employed Are The Most Satisfied ... and not the happiest. Maybe the most happiest are priests, nuns and people who dedicate their lives to others. Guess the survey was ok, but the journalist behind the article was not happy in the way that he interpreted the research.

marcofloriano··on What I Learned From My Failed Startup
I did´n like the video, a very poor quality. So i read just the excerpts. Nice observations. Good story. But they did well for around 10 years. I don´t think they were a startup anymore.
marcofloriano··on Are Algorithms the Magic Bullet?
In a word, maybe. I think algorithms is like the treasure map ... the way to get your insight , idea, solution done. Everybody, everyday, everywhere have ideas, good and bad ones, brilliant and stupids ... but what makes the difference between what will works, make money and more important, get done, is the way you implement your idea. I have a personal notebook with dozens of insights but i have no idea how to implement most of then ... so what´s the point on having just the brilliant idea ? But when you have an good idea and then write a good algorithm, you can get your idea very close from reality and that´s the most important thing. So maybe, yes, the algorithms is kinda kings in a world where "get something useful done" is extremely urgent.
marcofloriano··on Ramen Profitable
By my little experience, both of you are right. I´m facing both problems right now, today, this morning. I got a lot of friends with a lot of skills and desire to win building theirs own business, but they are not going to do that ... For example, i have two friends that with me invest on Forex Market. We used to work like slaves, to get our objective, build a profitable forex system (odds of win here are even worse than in the startups world, it´s about 5%). Two straight years of work ... but ... one of my friends get a girlfriend. Now he have to take more responsability because she lives in another city and if he wants to stick with her, he must get a job (some girlfriends are expensive!). Indeed he get one ... but ... he had to quite our little venture, he made a choice of take responsability for his new life (a job and a girlfriend), he could not hold on with the responsability of running behind this "fancy" dream ...

In another way, my parents wants me to quit from my dreams (build an forex system and a web based software startup) until my 18. They want me working for the government. Here at Brazil, work for Microsoft and Google are similar to work for the Government. Their point is that i have to be like everybody from my age, get a safe job, be independent, earn my own money and leave home (22 years old now). This kind of responsability is far more hard for me to take than the other. I can quite a (expensive)girlfriend and the status quo of having a job, but i cant ignore what my parents say and stay focused ! I wake up and sleep with this in my mind every day ! It´s like if a man must take a job to be a man, if not, you are just a kiddo. And being a kiddo on your 22 is being a loser. Being a loser is very hard to take.

Thanks both of you for pointing this types of responsability. And sorry for my bad english.

For God sake is it a joke or this guys are telling some truth !??? Specially the last stroke ...
marcofloriano··on Why Google is making an operating system
I ask you : Is it good for us ? I feel a certain joy in the air when IT guys talk about how google is doing well and microsoft doing bad. Like if it is good for the rest of us. It´s not. We cant have just one company owning the market, specially the internet market. It´s bad for the users, we need more googles, mor companys winning the internet war. If the Microsoft still being the number one enemy of google, so we already lost as users.
marcofloriano··on Rules for Bootstrapped Web App Startups
"Rules" are not a "How to build the next Google For Dummies".

"People can only talk about it if they know about it. How will they know?"

Using it. Start with your friends, and if they like it, they will talk about it to their friends. There´s a lot of ways to make the user "talk". It´s not asking him like a favor, but, basically, regarding him. It´s better if to need your app, he MUST invite new users. It creates a powerful chain of humans.

This would be better said as, "If you're not quite sure, don't be afraid to release. Blindly releasing for the sake of releasing is risky and stupid."

Nope. I think it´s about really release as fast as possible, as long as your app can do the "mainly" think. It´s not even an beta, it´s a alpha, but if it works, it´s must be released.

What is this doing on this list? Worst advice ever. Better would be, "Your app can succeed."

Because newbies business men think that they will be successful by the end of the year. Don´t dream, stay focused and prepare to lose, a lot. It´s not a game where the victories depends of you and your guts, but rather luck and a lot of uncontrolled factors. The best advise ? Good luck !

This can easily be the opposite of #1, "Build something people need and love." You're unnecessarily restricting yourself to the relatively tiny population of things that interest you.

Nah ... there´s a trick part here. If you make something that you can REALLY use, so it´s will be MUCH, but really MUCH more easy to sell to others. If you any time tried to sell something, you should know that.

Such as...

Hum ... anything your mom ever have heard (even if it exists) could help. The point is to start something new, and then look for YOUR USERS needs ... not having the brilliant idea. Dont stick with examples and ideas, go for the reality and try to create anything your user need.

Not according to Markus Frind, founder of plentyoffish.com.

Maybe ... but if you are have something that don´t trows a lot of shit on the screen of the user, and even so that have money, your product is really for the win. Dont be afraid, if your app really help somebody, they will be happy to pay for it.

Such as...

Get one, listen to him, release, get ten, listen to them, release, get 100, listen to them, release, get 1000, listen to them, release ... remember, "we are not on the software business, we are on the SHOWBUSINESS". And, of course, believe on your work.

Sweat a little. Release shit too soon and shoot yourself in the foot. Development must be done with design in mind.

I agree.

But develop with scaling in mind. (Will you really have enough time to completely redesign your data base schema after 1000 users?)

Agree again with you here.

What if spending money is more time/cost effective? (Paying someone to do something that would have taken me 5 days to do.)

It works only if in this five days you can make more money then you have payed for. Therefore you are not spending, but earning.

Sorry by my poor english.

marcofloriano··on Help: Artificial Intelligence best language to learn TODAY
Agree. I have a lot of experimental codes here that must be rewrite immediately. Looks like it´s the best way for me so far ...
marcofloriano··on Help: Artificial Intelligence best language to learn TODAY
That´s a really good point dmix, C is amazing and i already have experience with it. But let´s make some thing clear ...

a) Interesting, but i´m planning to write my own algorithms

b) C speed is just unique, maybe only lose for assembly

c) True, a very decisive factor.

marcofloriano··on Help: Artificial Intelligence best language to learn TODAY
Nothing is impossible ... and i got some guts to face this kind of challenge. Some friends told me exactly that, to stick with ruby and then figure out a way to implement the brain with that. Thanks.
marcofloriano··on Help: Artificial Intelligence best language to learn TODAY
Thanks a lot Alan. Therefore, there´s no point on searching for the newest languages to do this kind of software because, actually, they are more inclined to write languages to solve high level problems then lows ... AI case, i guess. I got your point on new vs old, and maybe on that specific case, you are right.
marcofloriano··on Professor Studies Social Customs in Video Games - Becomes Most Hated Player
What he tried to prove is something that each one of us already know but don´t have how to do. The "evolution" of humanity is restricted to some specific sectors, like technology, biological and so on. But when it comes to internal evolution, specific about how to treat different people, we still being the same shit ever. Two thousand years, forty ... don´t matter.

An simple example. I´m from Brazil (sorry by my poor english) ... and i play World of Warcraft as well. On the game, one of the social rules (no legal rules) is to talk in english. No problem. We do our best and it´s good to practice another language sometimes. BUT ... when we meet other brazilian folks and start talking in portuguese close to american guys ... all the hell start. They (not everybody off course) tend to offend us, our country and start saying a lot of bad things of us. We don´t take it personal, most part of the time, but it´s very weird because the tolerance to out of box things (like another idioms) and the treatment to those who make things in the "wrong" way is far too bad. I´m not saying that the scientist was correct, even us who talks in portuguese, but the reaction and the self control of the average human still being to naive. And, i think, he proves it very well.

marcofloriano··on What Went Wrong With Joost?
I think that´s that´s the point !
marcofloriano··on What Went Wrong With Joost?
The founders are just focused at earning money in my opinion. They realized that what is most important at the business world is earn money very early. They moved away from the initial concept of startups to a more like enterprise thinking. Different worlds with different priors. A startup focus on product, an enterprise on investors. And the most important thing, a huge part of the game comes from luck, but most part of the initials tend to think that it´s all about their skills, and, because already did before, they can do again ... it´s not like that. It´s not just about your skills, but about luck too ... so what they need to do is just shut down that try and start the next. Ouch ! But there´s a problem ... they are no an startup, they are an enterprise so they have to act like that, they need to do what they do instead, so they probably have to stick with the mistake until the end.
marcofloriano··on Interview with Bill Gates (1995)
Bill Gates just owned the guy ! Amazing ... the interviewer tried to push the guy but he knows exactly what to do.

From my view, Mr Bill and Microsoft cant stop evolving because of the bugs. They are right on focusing in new features rather than on bugs. The problem is building to complex software. That´s the mistake, on my opinion. Sometimes i use office 2000 to write some document and i don´t feel any difference from the 2007 ... well ... both do the job. So why i need the 2007 ? Because it´s have more features ... just this. So the interviewer should go for that, in my opinion, "Mr Bill, why you guys don´t build more simple and less complex software ?" So Bill would probably answer what EVERYBODY KNOWS BUT STILL WANT TO LISTEN TO FROM HIM TO CRUSH THE GUY ... "Well, because simple software don´t give so much money"

marcofloriano··on Show success before asking for help
The lesson is good and true for us, IT guys. But the idea behind getting help is exactly that, to show success. If you can show success by yourself why you need then ? So even your trust grows up when you have a happy past, but the problem with new "good" guys is that they don´t have sufficient confidence to pursuit the success by the lack of a past success history. So maybe the big trick is to trust until the end that you can be a success by yourself and then get the world.
marcofloriano··on IPhone Web Development with Ruby on Rails
People, i´m building an online VOIP app with ruby and i want to extend this app for iphone users. So i need any information on how to make the web app available on iphones (in the future, for any cellphones). The best that i get so far was this one. Any tips ?
marcofloriano··on Web Applications Should Be Compiled
I think you don´t have to stick with C (or any another language ) for everything. Each language are good for something. Right now, for example, i´m working in a financial intelligent software analyzer. I wrote the web crawler in ruby (not rails) and now i´m planing to write the core of the system, the decision maker, at Lisp. I think a programmer should not be sticked with just one language, there´s a lot of cool things out of the C world. You dont have to write an entire C framework to build an web apps at C ... it´s just too troublesome. You have another challenges. But when it comes to process data very fast in your server, so maybe you should consider another language.
marcofloriano··on Why the Palm Pre Will Fail
It´s hard to predict. I don´t believe that Pre will take the place of the iPhone, but fail !? Bah, far from that ...
marcofloriano··on Ignoring the Wisdom of Crowds
At the financial markets, at last, i can grant you that the masses are aways right ...
marcofloriano··on The man who could have been richer than Bill Gates
Nope ... it´s not about the money, it´s about yourself, the opportunity that you lost. Money, after some stage, is just a reflex of your ability to make more money. The ability of making money was probably the reason that bring him down. After all he is a business man ...

If i was him, i would be bad too, but my life is not based on that, is based on God ... so i could survive. After all, i guess the best lost for him was his wife, what, probably, screwed with him.

marcofloriano··on Libraries versus Frameworks
I think, that´s the difference between professional programmers and hackers. Hackers cant stand to write code without understanding what is happening behind the scenes. Therefore they need to go deep into their codes and understand each aspects. In the other hand, when your code for a big company and follow a lot of rules and demands, you are more inclined to use solutions like frameworks, because you are not having real fun, your are just ... working. Make sense for you ?
marcofloriano··on The Evolution of Lua
Nice point. Two months ago i was choosing between ruby, python and lua for a network project. I made a lot of research onto python and ruby, but did not find anything about lua. It should help me alot. As soon as i finish read, i will post my conclusions, now that i´m playing with ruby for two months.
marcofloriano··on What To Do When a Megacorp Wants To Buy You?
Don´t Sell. Money is not the best reason to sell. You guys have to achieve your best, it´s far important than money. So if you feel that you wont reach your best selling, stay far from they.
marcofloriano··on Create online UML diagrams in seconds
Brilliant !!!
marcofloriano··on Scientists Teleport Data on Tiny Scale
Seriously, i really think that if they get at there, the information world will change forever. Hope be alive until there.
marcofloriano··on Learning new languages makes you a master of none?
I guess to be a master you need to focus a lot, so it takes much hard focused work. The time you spend with other languages could be used to go more deep in at just one. So the point is

HOW FREAKY ARE YOU READY BE TO GET THE POINT OF MASTERING 2 OR MORE LANGUAGES ?

Most part of programmers are good at some languages, but not masters ... being a master of one is difficult, what if master of two or three.

So the answerer is : depends of the freaky behind the try !
