marcandre··on No dates, no sex, no weddings, no kids
Yes.

Consider the direction that the vast majority of countries have been moving in with regards to all these. South Korea appears to not have moved at all.

marcandre··on Paris Will Become ‘100% Cyclable’
Lack of predictability can be a feature, at least according to Hans Monderman, famous Dutch traffic engineer. He believed drivers become more alert and cautious when there’s more uncertainty on the road. [1]

From my experience, segregating biking lanes, and having more than one so as to allow passing is a definite plus. Bike collisions can be scary, but it's cars I'm really afraid of.

FWIW, I cycle all the time, often in Paris, Montreal and Barcelona and have strong preferences for doing so in that particular order.

marcandre··on Spending more on retaining developers reduces the cost of hiring developers
It's definitely possible. I applied for jobs with 3 days of Elixir experience + 30 years of dev experience. My requirement of half time was the issue, not my knowledge of Elixir, and I still got an offer from super.mx (we're hiring). I feel Elixir is particularly easy to pick up for an experienced dev.
marcandre··on I have no capslock and I must scream
It is pretty much a thing in French too, sadly.
marcandre··on Ask HN: I feel so shallow and dumb when I see what other smart people are doing
It's important to learn to be ok with our own limitations, our proximity to the average. I like Mark Manson's writing on the subject, e.g. https://markmanson.net/being-average or his book "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck"
marcandre··on Beam/Erlang/Elixir Concept Explanations
I was hired by super.mx with 3 days of elixir under my belt. We're still hiring btw...
marcandre··on French lawmakers approve a ban on short domestic flights
The website fromrome2rio includes transfer times, wait times and costs too.
marcandre··on Ask HN: I've realized I'm a bad software engineer and I'm over 30, what's next?
What next? `ZERO = 0`, `ONE = 1`, ...?
marcandre··on A lost tourist who thought Maine was San Francisco
I did the same mistake and only figured it out when checking in because there was a fee for checked luggage; there's no fee only for international flights, only for US/Canada flights.
marcandre··on A lost tourist who thought Maine was San Francisco
I was flying to Costa Rica from Montreal. Airline wanted money for checked luggage, but typically for long distance flights like this it's free. After enquiring, turns out I had bought the wrong flight to San Jose, California, instead of San Jose, Costa Rica. It's SJC vs SJO too, easy to confuse... Glad I figured that out before getting there!
marcandre··on 66% of all Tether (USDT) have been printed in the last 6 months
Note that Kraken has a USD<->USDT trading pair, so it is convertible there (and only there AFAIK)
marcandre··on Tether price manipulation
Tether does not, but you can trade USDT/USD pair on kraken.com
marcandre··on Tether price manipulation
Kraken.com has an actual USDT/USD pair you can trade and use actual hard currency.
marcandre··on Ruby 3.0.0 RC1
Using RuboCop should help a lot having an homogeneous codebase.
marcandre··on How and why I stopped buying new laptops
Loved my 11" MBA. I needed more RAM and I could switch to any laptop I wanted for free, so I got a used MB 12" because it's the only Apple laptop with a similar form factor.
marcandre··on Amazon disallows pointing out paid reviews
Sellers are catching on. I searched on reddit for range hoods comments. I found "reviews" that were written in a style I found suspicious (too elaborate, detailed and "business-like"). Clicking on these two users revealed other comments that made it clear this was actually astroturfing.
marcandre··on Child-safety laws may reduce the birth rate
The cost of raising a child is roughly 10-15k a year. How much is the car upgrade (on a per year basis)?
marcandre··on What I didn't know about Ruby Classes
In Ruby they are called "singleton classes", but the actual technical term is metaclass: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaclass (check the Ruby entry)
marcandre··on The Few, the Tired, the Open Source Coders
The three main players imo are Github Sponsors, Tidelift and Open Collective.
marcandre··on U.S. faculty job market tanks
Another way to state the conservation of professors: in the lifetime of a tenured professor, of all the grad students (s)he suppervised, the number that will succeed in getting a tenured position is (on average) equal to 1.
marcandre··on Ruby adds experimental support for rightward assignments
`parser` is indeed a fantastic gem. @whitequark is the initial author but today it is maintained by @iliabylich
marcandre··on More Than 1k Companies Boycotted Facebook. Did It Work?
The NY Times gets 2/3rd of its revenue from subscribers; advertisers are not their prime customers.

marcandre··on Today’s Javascript, from an outsider’s perspective
This resonates so much. I support some JS packages but I often wonder how anyone gets anything done in general on the JS side, and why people seem to accept the state of affairs. I'm spending most of my time with Ruby and it is night and day.
marcandre··on It’s OK for your open source library to be a bit shitty (2015)
Application domain may have something to do with it, language also. As a maintainer of Javascript and Ruby libraries, the difference in entitlement and cluelessness is remarkable.
marcandre··on Git Branch Naming Conventions
I find it simpler to always list my branches sorted by last commit date (with `git for-each-ref --count=30 --sort=-committerdate refs/heads/ --format='%(refname:short)'`). You can probably modify it to show the last author / date too.
marcandre··on Ask HN: Best books you read in the past decade?
Not yet mentioned: Come As You Are (Emily Nagoski). Sexuality book written for women that should be read by all.
marcandre··on Let's build houses for people, not cars
Same idea. See Barcelona and superblocks for example.
marcandre··on Ask HN: High quality investing discussion board?
I agree. There's a similar forum for Canadians too: https://www.financialwisdomforum.org/
marcandre··on The cyclist behind an anti-cyclist Facebook group
It is very limiting to believe that "rules are unabiguous" and should be followed to the letter. Rules are often (partly) wrong, not completely adapted to a situation, etc. Let's remember that "rules" used to make homosexuality worthy of a prison sentence, drinking alcohol was sometimes illegal too.
marcandre··on The cyclist behind an anti-cyclist Facebook group
I really wish "a bike running a red light" wasn't seen as such a problem. In many places, pedestrian cross on red lights also. In other places, cars can turn right on red lights. In at least one state, bikes can use red lights as stop signs, and stop signs as yield signs. It is easy run a red light on a bike (or as a pedestrian) in a safe manner, but it often isn't in a car.
