mapster··on Ask HN: Is There a Manual for Babies?
the best advice that will have the most effect, is not doing it alone.
mapster··on Ask HN: Mental barrier preventing earning more $$$
2 cents: there's a cap to earning if you are a 1 man shop and survive off low hanging fruit. the reason you can land those sales is you are charging little. you are charging little because that is what your skills demand - the skills you are marketing.

Change your skills AND clients. Its hard going from charging $1700 for a web widget that takes 1 day to do, to charging $17k for involved work. And the sales cycle for the latter is longer (1-2 months) vs a few days.

you can do it, you just need a new business model.

mapster··on Ask HN: Crowd avoidance function Google Maps
you could have app with geofences so phone vibrates when its best to put mask on.
mapster··on Show HN: Make Your PDF Look Scanned
For signing docs I open PDF in Illustrator and place my signature image then save and send. Are they really looking for signs of document having been scanned?
mapster··on Ask HN: How can I improve my writing
Read Steven Kings book ‘On Writing’ for starters. One point he emphasizes is in order to write well you have to read A LOT.
mapster··on Ask HN: Make something of the free time at work
Bring a laptop to work and use that when you have freetime?
mapster··on Show HN: Create interactive stories with your kids
Please slap an explainer video on the top fold asap. I bopped on and off. Wanted to have a show-and-tell and get 'sign up' or start - without any grounding on what this is and what i am making. love the concept, i think.
mapster··on Ask HN: Best ways to spend money towards climate efforts
I feel the hour is later we imagine. What we need is billionaires of the world to use their $ to drastically overthrow the major economies and stop CO2 production by any means. Its better the world goes into deep economic collapse than become unbearable for most life.
mapster··on Ask HN: On a scale from 1-10, how ugly was your MVP?
2-3, but I really think the voiceover was worth it! https://commutestudy.com
mapster··on Decrement carbon: Stripe's negative emissions commitment
Even personal elec vehicles is a dumb way for millions to get to/from work in the future. Its very 'western' and old way of thinking. In 100yrs ppl will be either walking/biking/public transit or remote.
mapster··on Decrement carbon: Stripe's negative emissions commitment
I've seen a lot of tech companies carefully analyzing impact of commute. Essentially re-locating closer/central to employees like using the commutestudy tool.

100% public transit commute is a long term goal, so work/live distance should be as short as possible short term.

mapster··on Ask HN: What is your employer doing to improve the commute?
I know many tech companies in the Bay Area consider commute times when re-locating offices, but wonder if this is based on corporate climate goal and how much weight it has in the decision process.
mapster··on Show HN: I built a service to discover rapidly growing Google search topics
Is there a Pro version where I can get alerts and manage my keywords etc and have a dashboard?
mapster··on Ask HN: Sharing side project w Boss
Very much appreciate your thoughts as it seems you have really walked this path.
mapster··on Ask HN: Sharing side project w Boss
thank you. I should add that my role includes zero coding/dev and my workgroup does our work without the benefit of APIs and apps. My apps greatly improve the quality of service the group can provide.

mapster··on Ask HN: I need ideas to impress fifth graders with technology
bring in a C64, Mac LC, ipad. So many ways to illustrate the advances in 20-30 yrs.
mapster··on Ask HN: How would you validate an idea for SaaS product?
I suggest 'scratch your own <business> itch'. I found these by working in new industries and finding major inefficiencies that could be solved with code :)
mapster··on Ask HN: Low self confidence and self esteem. How to improve?
Do you have anyone in your life that lifts you up, is a cheerleader for you?
mapster··on Ask HN : What Are the Alternatives to Upwork?
Upwork is the worst actor in this area. eLance was 10x better in design, fees and customer service
mapster··on Ask HN: What music do you code to?
Trance. Today: Stoneface & Terminal
mapster··on Show HN: My first B2B app for CRE tech [commutestudy]
Hi everyone - this is my first b2b app targeting companies/agencies that are changing office locations.

Why: During the site selection process, one of the pieces of the pie that companies consider, in addition to lease conditions/costs, is the impact of the move on their employee's commute.

My app provides quick and accurate comparison of the properties using their employee locations.

mapster··on Ask HN: Do you still pay with Paypal?
I use paypal for personal purchases and business invoices. its so easy and painless. been doing so for 12 yrs.
mapster··on Ask HN: What VPN service are you currently using?
Suggestions for a novice to learn how to use a VPN? My sites are on shared hosting and want to switch to VPN, but don't know anything about it.
mapster··on Show HN: A rap song about the struggles of finishing a side project
my new side project: Chaingang for hackers.

8 hrs of manual labor in the summer heat of a southern state.

code in the evening hours

the moment you ship, you are released

mapster··on Ask HN: Which side project do you plan to do in 2019?
If you can deliver any of these apps as a value add to my life, build it.
mapster··on Ask HN: How do you come up with side projects?
All of my projects come from my day job in a large industry which is behind the ball technically so lots of opportunities. Basically I write software that replaces my job. It will happen eventually, so why not be the one to large a series of SaaS to do it.
mapster··on Alarming Decline of Quality Youth Playtime
I grew up staying out past sunset daily, rain or shine, playing street hockey, building ramps and forts until I was in highs school. My wife is from Italy and having lived there I see guys my age who are just as street smart/adventurous and well rounded but grew up in apartments with a very different childhood. Americans think our experience is so special :/. That is the phenomena
mapster··on Ask HN: What exciting new projects do you want to do this year?
I am launching my first SaaS in February. I started working on it last April. Its a simple but effective app in commercial real estate market. I am very excited to get the first 100 paid users, which I am very confident I can obtain in the first 6 months. Yet, I remind myself daily to not get emotionally attached to this app service, so if I need to pivot or shutter it, I will do that and not lose time by April 2019 (so it will be a 1 year develop, launch, grow, evaluate cycle).
mapster··on Ask HN: How to shadow a CEO?
great attitude, but is shadowing also interning? Intern add value, but if you are shadowing - that implies being seen/never heard.

Seems you could get more value and give more as an intern. never too old to intern!
