mappum··on Show HN: Redstone, a distributed Minecraft server that runs on Node.js
Haha, I almost waited to buy it. So how is your project the same?
mappum··on Show HN: Redstone, a distributed Minecraft server that runs on Node.js
Well it's not technically Minecraft, but obviously heavily inspired. I'm pretty sure I heard about someone hooking it up to the real protocol.
mappum··on Show HN: Redstone, a distributed Minecraft server that runs on Node.js
That isn't an MMO, it is just a server hosting service. However, if they wanted to add MMOs to Realms, they could acquire us. ;)

Voxel.js is one: http://voxeljs.com/

I plan on open sourcing it and trying to foster a community of modding/contributions, but first I would like to clean up the code. Also, we want to figure out our business strategy.
mappum··on Commit to Keep Coding – GitHub + Beeminder
Well, the repo I'm thinking about using this on is private, so I have no pride and no shame.

Wait, I guess this doesn't support private repos.

mappum··on Commit to Keep Coding – GitHub + Beeminder
I don't think counting commits is a good metric, because I know if it were me, I would start splitting my commits up into trivial changes in order to meet the count ("added comment", "added line break", etc).

It supports going by issues, which is better, but how about counting additions/deletions?

mappum··on The Story of Wanz, 51-Year-Old Breakout Singer on "Thrift Shop"
It already has been on the radio for a while here in Seattle. :)

And yes, we liked it before it was cool.

mappum··on Learn Git Branching
My only criticism is that there a million modals you have to go through, and some are even multi page, adding complexity. I would rather have fewer modals/pages that show more text at once.

But overall, this is super handy, great idea :)

mappum··on Four Hours of Concentration
This is reassuring for me. On a normal day, I only really do so much actual coding and intense thinking, and I usually wrongfully compare it to the crazy energy drink fueled all-nighters (which makes me feel like I'm not getting enough done).
mappum··on No upvotes on Hacker News: Still awesome to submit
Ironically, this DID get upvotes.
mappum··on Most tech startups acquired in 2012 had no VC funding
This makes sense, because companies that don't take VC funding are the ones that didn't need it because they were turning profits from the start. However, there are a LOT more companies that don't get VC funding and never succeed.
mappum··on Show HN: Github for recipes
We made something very similar for Node Knockout (the 48-hour hackathon), http://foodhub.jit.su.
mappum··on Set good defaults
The power of defaultism is why Internet Explorer still has 26% market share.
mappum··on Things you need to know before working at a start-up
I'm working at a startup right now, and I think this is pretty accurate.

The freedom is nice (no hours, nobody telling exactly what to do every day). However, I will NEVER be able to have the passion for the product as I would if it was my own startup, this is just work to me.

mappum··on Things you need to know before working at a start-up
Same here, I even switched to a Macbook with the same results.

Mobile seems to be fine, though.

mappum··on Things you need to know before working at a start-up
I think they mean startups that are in a later stage than what you are thinking (funded and growing). It's not like the founders are going to be the only employees for the life of the company.
mappum··on Hamed Helped. Help Hamed.
Ah, so that means he wasn't even really "hacking". But I still think it is weird that the site calls it him "helping".
mappum··on Hamed Helped. Help Hamed.
While Hamed was honorable and didn't try to abuse his exploits, I think it is a stretch to say "Hamed helped". I doubt he tried to get into the data for the purpose of helping make it more secure, it is more likely that he just had the "hacker drive", where he just wanted the challenge of beating a system.
mappum··on Ask HN: Where do you keep your ideas?
+1 for Trello.
mappum··on Quake III Arena on Github
Cool, but why is this news? Hasn't it been up for a while now?
mappum··on A Northwest Pipeline to Silicon Valley
This article focuses more on potential employees graduating from UW, but Seattle is a great place to found a startup. In the Valley, everything is pretty crowded, and if you can find real estate, it's not going to be cheap.

In Seattle, it's a buyers market and you can grab some office space or a hacker house for a lot less.

There are more startup resources in the Valley (accelerators/angels/VCs), but that doesn't mean there is a good amount in the Emerald City. One of them, Madrona Venture Group (http://www.madrona.com/), just raised $300M to be invested in startups. There are also a few hacker spaces popping up, such as Surf Incubator (http://www.surfincubator.com).

If you want a good place to start your company with less competition and more rain, move to Seattle.

mappum··on A Northwest Pipeline to Silicon Valley
But this is the best it's going to get, and we only have a few more weeks of it.

It is beautiful to me, but there are quite a lot of days with dark skies which does make it a little depressing.

mappum··on Show HN: Using Twilio to extend the functionality of Siri
That's a cool idea for making a Siri API for anything, but in this application, the process is too slow to be worth it (you could open the Spotify app and type in "Lady Gaga" much quicker.
mappum··on Number Script - A Little Language that compiles to JavaScript
Oh, right, it didn't execute it. I need more caffeine (except not really, it's 2:30).
mappum··on Number Script - A Little Language that compiles to JavaScript
I sent a pull request that allows users to specify the base. https://github.com/substack/number-script/pull/2

Real men code in binary.

mappum··on Number Script - A Little Language that compiles to JavaScript
Well in the number-script compiler, it verifies code by running it (I'm not sure if that qualifies).

Also, you would get stuck on code with infinite loops.

mappum··on Show HN: Hacker News 2 - A HN clone built on Node.js, Backbone, and MongoDB
That seemed to be the consensus, so I just gave them all the same width. Better?

Idk how to make it obvious, but grey is visited links, orange is unvisited.

mappum··on Ask HN: Website Design Based on Internet Connection Speed
My mentality is that as long as you can present your content well to a vast majority of your users, you don't need the experience to be perfect for 100% of them. There is always going to be that one guy on IE6 and dial-up, but you shouldn't have to cater to his needs.

This doesn't mean aim for a really big, rich design that takes forever to load, it just means that you shouldn't have to compromise for the micro-minority.

About web development tips, read as much as you can about JavaScript and go with Node.js for the server. :D

mappum··on Open Source Chat Server in Node.js with dynamic rooms
Seriously, limit the damn message rates. I can crash the server with one line in the chrome js console.
