mandelbrotwurst··on What if biohackers injected themselves with mRNA?
There are times when changing things up is an improvement as well as times when it's not.
mandelbrotwurst··on Ask HN: How aware are you about building decentralised software on blockchain?
Yes, Uber takes a cut of rides, and that is where most of their revenue comes from. They do lose money on some rides (primarily short ones) and it's not a flat percentage per ride or a rate that hasn't shifted over time, but they are definitely taking a solid chunk on average. I may be misremembering, but I think I heard The Rideshare Guy say it's been around 28% as of late. It used to be a flat 20% years ago but the model has gotten a lot more complex.

> Can individual drivers do that or will cities just hammer them?

This is a good question. Personally, I think it's a risk that many drivers would be willing to take and that enforcing this sort of law on a per driver basis would prove extremely difficult.

What are the requisite “correct essential steps” and how did you determine that they will necessarily lead to an AGI?
mandelbrotwurst··on Ask HN: How aware are you about building decentralised software on blockchain?
> Uber drivers auctioning their time is not one of them, because Uber drivers do want a benefit that's only possible with centralization: vetting/banning of passengers.

I'm nearly certain that there are quite a lot of drivers out there who would be willing to forgo this if it meant taking home the huge share of their revenue that's currently going to Uber.

Thanks for making this! Would you mind sharing what sources this looks at, or are you keeping that proprietary?
mandelbrotwurst··on Changing how I review code
Writing the summary is a higher bar than just deciding that you could.
mandelbrotwurst··on Where did my 256 GB go? Mobile storage Analysis [pdf]
I'm not "bashing" anyone, and I wouldn't say the person who I replied to was "bashing" developers, either.

I agree that both developers and product managers want success for the business.

I probably should have said product owner here rather than product manager. I only meant to call attention to the fact that it's often others in an organization beyond the developers making decisions around whether to optimize for this sort of thing.

On average, more technically-minded folks are more likely to want to optimize for technical things like app install size where the business impact can be a bit more abstract and difficult to measure, particularly when compared to folks like product managers who are likely to have their individual performance evaluated by even less technical stakeholders on their ability to quantify the impact of whatever ends up getting shipped.

Again, I'm generalizing here - of course there are highly thoughtful and competent folks capable of balancing competing priorities across domains in any type of role.

Ah, gotcha
mandelbrotwurst··on I was let go for refusing to deploy a dark pattern
I requested that from one card provider and they told me that they couldn’t and I’d have to get a new card number to stop the charges.

When you say “you can”, are you just saying “you can ask”, or that you’ve had success doing this?

If the latter, mind sharing which card provider that was with?

mandelbrotwurst··on Where did my 256 GB go? Mobile storage Analysis [pdf]
> it seems like devs just assume that people only use their app and it’s not reasonable that the Gmail app requires 300MB or PayPal needs 250.

mandelbrotwurst··on As the Pandemic Recedes, Millions of Workers Are Saying 'I Quit'
If I have monthly income of 3000 and spend it all, how am I to save 1000 monthly without lowering my costs?

This sounds impossible, unless maybe you’re not counting all spending as “ordinary costs”?

mandelbrotwurst··on California will pay off all past due rent
If all of the properties owned by small scale landlords are converted into properties owned by large scale ones, you’re going to end up with more income inequality.

It also probably pulls wealth out of the local area, depending on where the owners of those larger corporations are.

mandelbrotwurst··on NIH study offers new evidence of early SARS-CoV-2 infections in U.S.
Are you sure? Are the standards for who qualifies according to the law documented somewhere?

I always thought that you’re legally able to self-identify however you deem accurate on those government forms in the U.S?

If the government deems all banks “too big to fail”, does that remove the risk?
mandelbrotwurst··on It’s hard work to make ordering groceries online so easy
I would think there might be lots of reasons, but one that comes to mind is that supermarkets are physically designed to get the customer to spend as much time and money as possible in the store as opposed to finding the items on their list(s) as efficiently as possible like a grocery delivery service would want its workers to be able to do.

> If the value of their currency drops substantially, will they go to war with some unknown power that's causing this drop and reverse the change?

They might - that’s essentially what the U.S. has done (or, at least, did for a while) when other nations tried to break the petrodollar system.

Would you why summarizing why it “makes no sense at all”?

I was aware that there was a trilogy, chose to dig into “Pattern” first, and got a lot out of it.

mandelbrotwurst··on A Pattern Language (1977) [pdf]
The introduction to the book agrees with you and warns about that - it specifically mentions that it is just one possible pattern language, which is why the title is “A Pattern Language” and not “The Pattern Language”
mandelbrotwurst··on Facebook extends its work-at-home policy to most employees
I would tell you no thanks and suggest that we take things a bit more slowly while you take more notes and ask more questions in most situations.

Being constantly on camera without being recorded is already super demanding.

I don’t doubt that this helps you, but it’s not without a cost to those on the other end.
