Maybe use it for overnight batch work! Hopefully, you aren’t suggesting it using for realtime conversations!

> The point that the major labs don’t seem to get is that the vast majority of use cases simply don’t need models that have 50 PhDs and can speak 12 languages.

I think that's true across the board. Along those lines, most companies all of a sudden started looking for AI researchers, instead of software engineers, which is what they still need :-).

Just like a decade-ish ago, when the FAANG interview style got openly known, then everybody started to conduct interviews in that pattern :-)

mandeepj··on What is happening to jobs? Separating AI hype from reality
> I managed to get a job by April without putting in a lot of work

Congrats! Probably, you have the blessing of luck as well. One of my ex-colleagues got laid off and managed to find an uplevel job within a month, but another has been looking for almost 2 years now. He showed me that most of the jobs he applied to over the past two-ish years are still open, while they rejected him by saying the usual - we are moving forward with the candidates more aligned with the position.

mandeepj··on Saudi Arabia to be sold uranium enrichment ability by US without IAEA inspection
Majority of republicans lawmakers still support him; people voting for his candidates in primaries and show up in his rallies in troves. They all are blinded by his fake ‘golden age’ clout. It’s just a wishful thinking if he’d be ever held accountable.

> You're telling me we've finally got robots that can do our laundry?

I’m still waiting for it to peel, slice n dice onions so that I do not have to cry while doing so, and not pay $8k for that robot.

mandeepj··on As a musician, I prefer illegal downloading over Spotify (2011)
> which is why you see all of them now becoming "channels" inside each other

But you have to pay for those 'channels' separately, so subscription hell is still there. That explains why it's not a solution! Ideally, service providers should share revenue, and then it could be called a unified or frictionless experience.

> "we're not at level 5 driving yet" despite having hundreds of millions of miles driven autonomously every day

Those are two very different things; you know that, right? You could even drive billions of miles, but that doesn't mean we have attained Level 5.

Level 5 definition: https://www.zf.com/products/en/cars/stories/6_levels_of_auto...

To each their own, but for me - that'd be a heavy cognitive load. I ask Claude or ChatGPT to summarize HN comments and the article and provide any takeaways or wisdom nuggets. That's it.

isn't that a tall claim?

mandeepj··on Grok Build is open source
> This was never about money for him, but about control over a key technology

It's very comforting to know for those reasons he'd never be able to become POTUS; although there's still a way, I hope he never gets to know about it. Otherwise, he'll make it a fascist land.

They don't give a F about AI or any new AI model that was announced this morning. Wasn't there news a while ago about them buying Perplexity?

Why are most lawsuits filed on Friday? To avoid the excessive news cycle? But in this case, Apple might want that.
mandeepj··on Apple sues OpenAI, accuses ex-employees of stealing trade secrets
> Apple says it discovered a pattern of OpenAI recruits emailing themselves confidential information when leaving Apple, including Tan.

That's one of the dumbest things one can do while on their soon-to-be ex-employer's network.

Absolutely! In case anyone else still have any doubt - Ask Microsoft !!

Starlink is the leverage that SpaceX have here. They could offer a cheap voice, data - national and international plans. And, could throw even more goodies in there.

> This is why the right gets away with saying liberals hate America.

Right can’t say a single word without bringing up Left first! What’s their obsession with them? Why they seek constant validation from Left? Pretty clear who’s hateful! Given the current mess, it’s also clear who hates America.
