maligree··on Show HN: airsocial.co – meet the people on your flight
A reasonable part of them does. Sure, there's a huge group of people who treat flights as getting from A to B (I'm looking a business travelers here), but a decent portion of them says they'd use an app like this if they had more control over who gets to see them.
maligree··on Programming is Not Terrible
Huh. I understood the article he's referring to as something more along the lines of "don't make «programming» your job, make it your tool". Similarly, not becoming a "software engineer" means not becoming a merely guy with a hammer, but a guy with and idea and a hammer. That idea I liked pretty much, actually.
maligree··on JetBrains is working on a cross-platform C++ IDE
Huh. I'm surprised by how many comments here are of the "but we already have XYZ" flavor.

You're right. We don't need more. Let's just stop trying to make things better.

Wakey, wakey. JetBrains is investing time and money (or is that the same thing, anyway?) to develop a new C++ IDE, a market (though I don't like that word) where nothing new has sprung up in a while. That's __good__ news, what's the matter with you? Can it harm you?

maligree··on MPAA: The Cloud Is A Threat To Us And The Best Response Is Censorship
I misread the title as "we don't understand this shit so clearly we gotta fight it".
maligree··on "Getting started with Ember.Js is easy." - No it isn't
Fist bump* then.

* - or any other commonly accepted ritual interpretable as "we cool, we cool". The cooler the better.

maligree··on "Getting started with Ember.Js is easy." - No it isn't
Not sure how serious you are, but I hate what you just said. It's like.. YOUR software made me frustrated, don't tell me to just wait it off. The reason I'm talking to you like this is YOUR code. And sure, when it's just raving, that may be right, but the guy genuinely TRIED and went through hoop after hoop.
maligree··on Hacker News Refrigerator Magnets
Well, great, there's my day. Five minutes ago was an hour ago.
maligree··on Larry Page: "Facebook is doing a bad job"
I thought you said you had news.
maligree··on This Isn't the Petition Response You're Looking For
That was awfully a lot like hearing my parents say to me "you don't need the Brickbeard's Bounty LEGO set, you already have the Castaway's Raft, son".
maligree··on Grace Hopper to Programmers: Mind Your Nanoseconds
Rant inspired by seeing her for the 5th time this week:

It's like every time I hear about Grace Hopper, it's got to do with a piece of wire. Or tube. And any comments on it are usually strangely excited, almost awestruck. What's up, people? She did some other stuff too. Like, no big deal back then, writing a god damn compiler.

It's like people treat her like a dancing bear. Look, woman! Look, uniform! Look, she said "nano"! Take a step back and a deep breath. Chill out.

"Bike shed" comes to mind, in a weird way.

maligree··on Hacker, Verizon duel over customer record claims
So.. sorta like the cheeky seagull that nabs crisps?
maligree··on Perl is 25 years old today
I'll raise the glass: here's to Perl, for being the first language I could actually get shit done in.

Unmaintainable? Who cared. Got shit done. Too many ways to do things? Who cared. Got shit done.

I have this totally false feeling that BACK THEN* we wrote IRC bots and we were happy. And `perl -e '"A"x800'` was the destroyer of worlds.

* - shit, I just realized I'm young.
