malchow··on Plunge in regional bank stocks triggers spate of trading halts
You are being downvoted but there are really people who think like this.

Regional banks do not have a substantive underlying issue and do not deserve to die by a rotating regional bank panic.

malchow··on Qualcomm CEO says he’s expecting Apple to use its own modems in iPhones in 2024
This lower power modem and the Enovix Si battery and we're looking at 5G for real, finally.
malchow··on Argonne: Lithium-Air battery 1200 wh/kg, 1000 cycles
Enovix is already at 1,500 cycles w/ 88% capacity retention at *889 wh/L per core* (figure ignores packaging, like the Argonne figure) at 6C CCCV charge – 1C discharge.

And that is a commercially relevant sized cell that is being produced at Fab1 in Fremont.

malchow··on Is the smart grid all hot air?
The real future is a fully distributed series of microgrids, which affords all of distributed generation, smart grid coordination, and resilience. If you want to work on this, think about joining Enphase, which makes grid-forming microinverters and the software to coordinate on a micro and macro level: https://enphase.com/careers

A 'smart grid' that continues to give utilities a mainframe style monopoly position will not work and will never be the solution. They simply aren't capable of building or maintaining the infrastructure, at any price.

Or email me if interested.

malchow··on Electric vehicle battery capable of 98% charge in less than ten minutes
Happily, you are misunderstanding their filing. They do have working prototypes which meet the announced specs.

They also have a plan to push beyond the current (and very impressive) 900 Wh/L energy density.[1] It is those future-looking plans which may (or may not) require higher energy density materials on the anode and cathode.

malchow··on Electric vehicle battery capable of 98% charge in less than ten minutes
Worth noting that this battery is commercialized at their fab in Fremont.
malchow··on Powering the moon: Designing a microgrid for future lunar base
Hi Dan –– this is definitely not true. Enphase offers long-dated warranties of up to 25 years on its systems and equipment. This comes as the dividend of serious work on hardware and software quality.[1]

Opening an app certainly isn't necessary to maintain the warranty.

Someone from the company will reach out to you to clarify/remediate/collect more information.

malchow··on Powering the moon: Designing a microgrid for future lunar base
That's hard to do without enabling the massive industry of low-brow leadgen companies to scrape data and make the spam problem even worse. But I hear you. I will look at it.
malchow··on Germany paying $5.5B for Intel fab
It will be clear that this money was wasted within ten years.

What a government needs to do to attract real manufacturing entrepreneurs:

- pro family policies (for people)

- pro immigration (for people)

- cut environmental laws (for capex make-right)

- cut business taxes (for gm make-right)

- cut personal taxes (for people)

- fight back against china-sponsored economic maneuvering at the multilateral level (to create a competitive market)

For anyone wanting to work on problems like these at commercial scale, check out Enphase[1]. We build real AC microgrids that perform realtime energy production and consumption calculations to enable true microgrid orchestration with or without the presence of the utility.

malchow··on How Google will spend $1M on the internet for you
This has been going on for a decade. This is basically a form of economic terrorism wherein left-wing activists use an easily influenceable platform like Google [employees], mere market makers, to prevent ad dollars from flowing to viewpoints they dislike. They basically want companies like Ford to involuntarily be denied access to their. . . you know. . . customers.

Sorry, "CheckMyAds.org," lots of Ford truck buyers are conservatives. That's normal. You're harming Ford, harming consumers, increasingly harming Google itself, and also increasingly not harming the viewpoints you are seeking to harm. Best to give up this particularly Orwellian tactic.

malchow··on NERC sounds alarm on solar tripping in ‘sobering’ summer reliability report
Every IQ micro and battery you add adds more ability to deal with current surge requirements. On my 8.5Kw system with 30KwHr of Enphase LFP batteries, I can handle turning on AC when I have full sun and partially charged batteries without going to the grid.

AC is a difficult load. Get the inrush current here: https://www4.enphase.com/en-us/support/faq/how-support-hvac-... and you will be able to figure it out.

Your refrigerator will be fine. Its locked-rotor amperage requirements are small compared to AC.

malchow··on NERC sounds alarm on solar tripping in ‘sobering’ summer reliability report
No, these days microinverters aren't the bottleneck. The IQ7 can handle up to a 460 W module, with 366 VA output. The IQ8 can handle up to a 540 W module, with 384 VA output. 97.6 efficiency.
malchow··on NERC sounds alarm on solar tripping in ‘sobering’ summer reliability report
The Enphase IQ8 is now in general release, and is grid-forming.

During sun, a site can island with perfect 60Hz AC power from the ASIC-driven IQ8. No battery –– and certainly no grid –– needed.

malchow··on 1 TW of solar to be deployed annually by 2030
That's right. Although (source: built Si battery company) the more powerful commercial trend is customers with arcane needs paving the way for architectures and chemistries that later can serve more general needs. Expensive NMC did make for cheaper NMC, but of course what actually happened is that Tesla and the automaker followed the lead of Enphase in switching over to LFP.

In the more exotic architectures and chemistries, what's moving the needle is the exotic military or medical need, where the battery can be 10x more expensive on the OEM BOM and barely move the actual end unit price to the final user.

malchow··on California grid set record of 97% renewable power on April 3
Solar in California is often breakeven after 4 to 7 years. Enphase enables microgrid systems, and the IQ8 can keep your house powered even when the grid is down, and even without batteries –– something never before possible.

https://enphase.com/sites/default/files/2021-10/IQ8SP-DS-000...

Worth nothing that PG&E is working with CA Democrats to try to kill rooftop solar. They want renewables, but only if distributed using their (badly operated and overpriced) grid. [1]

malchow··on A Meta-Analysis of the Effects of Lockdowns on Covid-19 Mortality [pdf]
"While this meta-analysis concludes that lockdowns have had little to no public health effects, they have imposed enormous economic and social costs where they have been adopted. In consequence, lockdown policies are ill-founded and should be rejected as a pandemic policy instrument."
malchow··on Infection fatality rate of Covid-19 in community with emphasis on the elderly [pdf]
Refined statistical work from Ioannidis.

Results: Twenty-five seroprevalence surveys representing 14 countries were included. Across all countries, the median IFR in community-dwelling elderly and elderly overall was 2.9% (range 0.2%- 6.9%) and 4.9% (range 0.2%-16.8%) without accounting for seroreversion (2.4% and 4.0%, respectively, accounting for 5% monthly seroreversion). Multiple sensitivity analyses yielded similar results. IFR was higher with larger proportions of people >85 years. Younger age strata had low IFR values (median 0.0013%, 0.0088%, 0.021%, 0.042%, 0.14%, and 0.65%, at 0-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40- 49, 50-59, and 60-69 years even without accounting for seroreversion).

All studies were pre-therapeutics.

malchow··on Google and Facebook execs allegedly approved dividing ad market among themselves
When we helped brief on this investigation, we postulated that header bidding might serve as a heuristic for the economic damage caused by the Google adtech monopoly. In time, mostly through private lawsuits, I expect some version of this to bear out.
malchow··on Stanford requires booster shots for all students
That isn't so, and both controlled studies and population-level statistics make that clear.

Meanwhile California progressives are attacking rooftop solar, which provides 25 years of near-free clean energy, because utilities want some of the action. [1]

The alleged plot to kidnap the MI governor appears to have been conceived by law enforcement, also.[1]

The Trump-Russia collusion dossier was also made up by political consultants[2], and then laundered, wittingly, by law enforcement.[3]

Seems like a negative trend.

Stanford is also remaining willfully ignorant of prior infection-conferred immunity, easily measured by IgG assay. This is all becoming very embarrassing.
malchow··on Idiocracy: A disturbingly prophetic look at the future
I think you're right. Idiocracy was much more Judge's critique of the lazy morality ("It's irresponsible to have kids!") and lazy voting ("burrito coverings") of the yuppie class. These days, you can even see wokeism being lambasted ("Welcome to Costco, I love you.").
malchow··on Children develop robust and sustained cross-reactive immunity after Covid
I couldn't agree more. Children trying to eat lunch outside in the cold in NYC. Children in California barred from classrooms for a year+, and soon children forced to receive one or more medicines they simply do not need.
