make3··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
brother H-1Bs are transparently vectors for foreign educated workers to come to the US to build lives and eventually get a green card, so the US doesn't have to actually build a functional education system.

no one talented will come pay taxes and make your nice tech companies carry the S&P500 and in turn, everyone's retirement funds, if you treat them like hogs

make3··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
NVidia has reasonable incentives to keep things open indefinitely, it wants people to use it's GPUs
make3··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
I think this is good.. They have incentives to keep things free to keep people using their GPUs. I think that's one of the least enshittifying outcomes possible
make3··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
& the town square forces you to listen to famous gossippers and dumb popular people you've never heard of
make3··on Thomson Reuters Launches Its Own Frontier Model
they mention using an open weights model, which one it is doesn't really matter
make3··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
It will always be wasteful to have a GPU sleeping next to you 99% of the time. Something like OpenRouter is the solution imho, for me at least. I realize that that some people care about privacy more though, and I respect that.
make3··on Thomson Reuters Launches Its Own Frontier Model
they should unite to block all news from getting to LLMs without LLM providers paying per access
make3··on Thomson Reuters Launches Its Own Frontier Model
the press release says this explicitly
make3··on Thomson Reuters Launches Its Own Frontier Model
40M$ to get a marginally better model is surprising, why not just use the free weight models
make3··on Octopus intelligence may be related to never-before-seen mutation
why chicken or egg? it's way to imagine both evolving together in a mutually reinforcing relationship where the gains in one are direct incentives for the other to continue to evolve, etc
make3··on OpenAI: GPT 5.6 Sol price reduction (until at least Nov 21)
interestingly also, open weight models are also more effectively run in the cloud, so it creates a weird scenario where the frontier labs crash but the compute providers, not as much
make3··on OpenAI: GPT 5.6 Sol price reduction (until at least Nov 21)
well, a stroke of luck until the whole US stock market crashes & everyone's retirement funds get cut 40% I guess when people internalize this. it will have to happen sooner or later though I suppose
make3··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
I think it's a prisoners dilemma & that democracy, with its short term incentives, leads to politicians taking the easy way out, even if it creates bad precedent for their countries.

obviously democracy is still better than the alternative though

make3··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
it's also just waiting for Trump to be less powerful & making sure a bad precedent is not established, which is a good idea
make3··on Casio F-B100W-1A
Maybe it's because the United States is not the whole planet
make3··on Opus 5.0 drives incoherence into the stratosphere
This is my impression as well, that an exaggeratedly precise yet bad at communication with humans way of talking snuck in through reasoning RL, that it might be useful when it talks to itself (CoT)
make3··on Opus 5.0 drives incoherence into the stratosphere
it started at Opus 4.7, way before watermarking
make3··on The brain may be about to have its Ozempic moment
It's probably the default clickbait title for any article about a new drug.
make3··on The "Disability Dongle": Why Silicon Valley Hates Me and You
this type of individualist responsibility diffusion is exactly why nothing happens in the US, & why France has protests the second the govt does anything bad.

no one is asking you to solve the whole problem, just be part of fighting for the real solution

make3··on Discovery Loop
I think Google's branding was starting to be too poor in AI to get top talent, they needed the refresh
make3··on Discovery Loop
it's just a low effort snark comment, don't overthink it
make3··on Web security is too hard
this is the correct take
make3··on The Silicon Valley Founder Meat Grinder
Snapchat's famously also is one
make3··on The Silicon Valley Founder Meat Grinder
this is just an empirical fact
make3··on The Silicon Valley Founder Meat Grinder
they often go into the minuses I'm sure, spending culture in the US is bananas
make3··on Run Kimi K3 using 29 GB of RAM at 0.50 tok/s
here at 0.5 tok/s, it's like getting 1/100 of a tomato for your lunch per hour, and you can't just let it grow, you have to look at it growing just as you're about to eat, and it doesn't accumulate between meals
make3··on Run Kimi K3 using 29 GB of RAM at 0.50 tok/s
paying for the hardware is also too expensive for no reason, you're not querying the llm 24/7. Better use a service that hosts a lot of popular open weights LLMs, unless you have a very good reason not to.
make3··on Is AI reasoning right for the wrong reasons?
You couldn't possibly successfully do clever hans for novel mathematical proofs and counter-examples that don't exist yet, however here we are.

Generalization in successful results is enough to close this argument for me.

make3··on Tailscale didn't stop the Hugging Face intrusion
It's just a way to get visibility. A Canadian apology to Lady Gaga while she's being interviewed.
make3··on AI's top startups are barely publishing their research
No one in the field itself takes Musk seriously, or sees him as part of it. I think he's a Nazi and an idiot. You're weird if you trust what the leader of DOGE, sig heiler and maker of the cyber truck says about anything scientific.

Recursive self improvement is a blue skies longer term thing. No one technical is saying that it's live right now.
