majjgepolja··on Moore's Law for Everything
Wrong analogy.

Horses could not be retrained to do jobs other than those replaced by machines.

Horses did not have voting power.

A large number of unemployed horses would not go on robbing and killing humans in a mob.

And decrease in human population is welcome until some point. (We have relatively more educated people having less / no children, and backward, dumb stupid people having more children, which is BAD).

Difference being you can re-train Amazon SWEs as more things are automated / become more efficient.
majjgepolja··on Lost in Thought: Psychological Risks of Meditation
> Per Hindu practices, Meditation is the first, foremost step towards self realization.

Isn't it 7th stage or something? In yogic philosophies. Admittedly don't know lot about these stuff.

majjgepolja··on Lost in Thought: Psychological Risks of Meditation
Any idea about how so-called self-hypnosis compares to meditation? In terms of side effects of overdoing it.
majjgepolja··on Java 16
> better be in a Java shitshow with slow idiots than in a C++ shitshow with autist geniuses :D

It's autist geniuses that built the world when slow idiots were manually doing everything.

majjgepolja··on We Don’t Use Docker
preferably future work and dreams and ramblings too..

preferably over a twitch stream..

majjgepolja··on JavaScript from 2001 on India's largest private bank site
It's true for many bank systems I guess.

I have been under serious troubles in past because a Bank randomly blocked my ATM card & UPI.

majjgepolja··on Speed of Rust vs. C
Here's my completely unbiased benchmark which use different data structure, uses outside library in one language and non recursive implementation. I hope you don't need the link.

Interesting.

There's a hypothesis about ADHD that it's a trait of evolution for Hunter-gatherer lifestyle, with even a few studies favoring the opinion. But that doesn't explain many symptoms of ADHD.

Btw, with many 'gifted' children having ADHD, I am curious whether there is any reason / correlation for it.

TIL. Is BAP comorbid with ADD too?
majjgepolja··on How Big Tech Is Importing India’s Caste Legacy to Silicon Valley
> These kids (huge majority from upper castes) are treated with too much deference at home by the parents, family and society. Since they are served well at home by servants ...

Do not know which area you are from. But in practice most of the traditional "Upper caste" people are not rich enough for having servants. Their air of superiority comes from mere name of the caste and tribal feeling, but upper caste people will be dime a dozen in any given area and grow up like middle class kids.

majjgepolja··on How Big Tech Is Importing India’s Caste Legacy to Silicon Valley
Most of them don't even ask your caste these days. I do not know where you're from. And there's even caste based affirmative action.
majjgepolja··on India downgraded from ‘free’ to ‘partly free’ in democracy report
Not culturally very much. They were probably managed by sub-kings (I forgot the english word). Not a lot changed in South under Mughal rule, compared to north.
majjgepolja··on Accidentally quadratic: When Python is faster than C++
C also does lack few features which can provide better performance or provide hints to the compiler.

computed goto, non-aliasing guarantees, actual "const" - just a few on top of my mind.

Generic code is generally faster in C++ unless you manually reimplement it in C.

Rust can be faster than C in few cases because stronger aliasing guarantees, but few compiler bugs prevent it.

Doing some good-performance stuff is also more difficult in C. Strings are null terminated etc..

majjgepolja··on Accidentally quadratic: When Python is faster than C++
It's not technically. Worst-case guarantee is required for some applications. Hash Maps have better amortized complexity but some implementations have bad worst case time.

Java uses balanced trees instead of linked list in their chained-hashtable implementation, if I recall correctly.

Thicker skin doesn't help people who get offended for publicity.
majjgepolja··on Godot maintainer removes controversial satirical piece from documentation
News outlets look for sensational news, it is enough for them. Not long before, NYT ruined some hard-earned reputation of jetbrains with their clickbait headline and suffered no repurcursions.

majjgepolja··on Why can't I write code inside my browser?
> you have to type everything

LoL they dont know tab completion exist.

Discoverability & Learning curve is a point in favor of GUIs. But having to press more keys (offset by not having to use mouse & fight with shitty new designs) is not.

majjgepolja··on How Vivaldi browser is different from Google Chrome
Sadly no one realizes such things that do not have an immediate effect, especially if it does not harm status quo.

The only thing that can unseat chrome is competition from another well funded corporation, not some fringe activist MBAs who cannot keep engineering talent.

majjgepolja··on The State of FOSS in India
It was offensive, so..
majjgepolja··on The State of FOSS in India
I am from India.

can agree that there is large amount of people who are there just to game the system, and not in it for passion. This is because our country is 3rd world and there is lot of importance for social mobility, lot of interestless ppl enter the field.

But do not lose hope yet. In every college that teaches CS you will find one or two people who are actually passionate and talented. The thing is you dont find these people in bloated-management shitty consultancies, but either in foreign companies or sometimes in startup-like Indian companies.

majjgepolja··on What does privacy mean under surveillance capitalism?
Wow you even block CSS.
