Can anyone comment as to why they'd go for a cortex M3? @120Mhz it seems like overkill for the function of this device. I know it's pretty cheap but it could have made even cheaper with a less capable micro.

+1 This is something I've been meaning to introduce. We're slowly moving from the idea of hacking away and making things work to the idea of making production ready code and this mentality is not getting through to everyone

Thanks for the feedback. We are a small team (3 embedded sw developers) and I am more or less the guy with actually production releases under my belt. I feel my approach has been very measured and very polite to the point where I feel like i am walking on "egg shells" when doing the code reviews.

Show them you get things pointed out in your own code reviews, that it's a team game where everyone is just looking out for each other. That bad code doesn't mean they're a bad programmer, that critique of their code isn't a critique of their skill, that everyone gets blind to the problems in their own code and benefits from a second set of eyes.

within a few days we're going to be trying exactly this in hopes to show how code reviews are not about attacking and instead about helping.

I was not surprised that it was called a VM. I was surprised that I didn't know that!

I have an interesting problem. A co-worker of mine appears extremely sensitive to his code being reviewed and I honestly don't know how to deal with it. He feels attacked (and becomes defensive during code reviews) because the reviewers focus on the "bad things and mistakes" of his code instead of the accomplishments.

Has anyone here dealt with similar issues during reviews?

I feel the same way. I went to read the post expecting a lot more than what I found and came away feeling both more knowledgeable than I thought I was and more ignorant for not knowing that I could get away with calling what a saw a "Virtual Machine"

My hat is off to Spire. I interviewed with them but for several reasons did not do well during the interview. Regardless they were very cordial and understanding. If you are into embedded check out these guys!

My father. We grew up extremely poor in the midst of a civil war and he made extra income by fixing TVs and other electronics. I remember watching him measure voltages with his "old school" analog multimeter and watching the glow of the vacuum tubes and that heat and smell that emanated from those TVs. Watching him work with electronics sparked my interest from a very early age and led me to my career path

I am conflicted by this. On the one hand the EE in me is excited to see how technology is making our lives easier by allowing us to spend less time on mundane tasks. On the other hand I have this nagging feeling about all this e-waste. I think about all the electrical components being used for a device that has a single use and is likely (at this price point) will be very disposable

Can anyone recommend some good resources to get started writing low-level drivers for windows (books or open source examples)? I work mostly with embedded software on custom project. From time to time I need to interface with Windows machines and the information of this topic has always been limited.

As a new parent I quickly learned that kids emulate what they see (and they seem to pay more attention that we give them credit for) In an effort to prove this out my wife and I got library cards and started reading books during my daughter's (alone) play time after dinner. Very soon after this experiment started she too started picking books and now likes to read (recite from memory) her bed-time books.

Interesting topic and one that really resonates with me. I have always been interested in learning how to make money the way "people with money" make it. Personally I have come to the conclusion that a few solid stocks paired with protective puts and/or call options (to make a little extra money for sideways markets) provides a decent way to generate some extra income and greatly reduces risk of losing everything from a single mistake

I agree with you. I think structs help readability specially we using function pointers within structures. Would it be out of line to suggest a new naming convention for struct typedefs and pointer typedefs i.e _t for typedegs and _tp for typedeg pointers

Where did the addresses used in the linker (.text and data) script come from? I work mostly in bare-metal embedded world and I use linker scripts but in my world the micro architecture defines where FLASH and RAM are located. How does it work when the application runs inside an OS?

Not only that!. Companies that sponsor an H1B person need to "show" proof that they have attempted to hire a US person before they can turn to sponsor an in immigrant.

Data corruption during power loss has also been one of my biggest headaches with it comes to single board computers. I don't think I can say this is an issue that afflicts RPis only. However if you attempt to log data into the same device that you boot from you are asking for trouble imho. Someone else in this thread mentioned running the OS from RAM. I didn't know this was an option but I need to do some reading on how to do this. In your case though, I think backing up to a remote device is about the only sensible way to attack the data corruption problem.

That's a good question. I haven't paid much attention to the power supply. I have a regulated (lab grade) power supply I am going to check if there are any changes when powered by it

That's where I see the issues crop up. "Uncontrolled shutdowns" seem to be a killer of SD cards for me even when using R/O only filesystems. Wouldn't this be enough of a factor to point the issue towards software and not hardware though?

I love the RPi and what it has done to introduce computing/programming/linux to more people. However I can't get past how unreliable booting from an SD card has been for me.

I know reliability depends heavily on the SD card used and on the quality of board socket but I am disappointed that Rev 2 of the board did not come with the option of on-board flash.

Slightly off topic. I have yet to be convinced that non-native applications is the way of the future? It seems like the current trend is to make everything run in the browser these days. I don't really have an argument against it but I just can't quite buy into it yet.
