magicnubs··on ‘I’m Broke and Mostly Friendless, and I’ve Wasted My Whole Life’
> I have no answers. I wish I did.

I think this is something that VR tech good enough to make you feel like you're really in the same room as someone (meaning not just visuals, but sight, sound, touch, smell) will help with. That may be hundreds of years away though.

magicnubs··on A Search for Alien Life Begins in Earth’s Oldest Desert
I think it depends on what "someday" means to you. Within our lifetimes? Almost certainly not. Within 100 generations? Still, probably not. But "eventually"? I could see that being likely, if:

* humanity doesn't extinguish it's own flame

* there isn't some freak, inescapable, immitigable cosmic occurrence before we've gotten out of our own solar system

* we develop technology for near-lightspeed or FTL travel

If the above were true, I think the only thing that would stop us from finding non-Earth-origin life some time before the heat death of the universe would be if there is actually no other life out there, which I think is unlikely.

However... I do think that there's basically 0.0% chance of finding extraterrestrial life in the deserts of Earth, excepting in the case that the spontaneous generation of simple life is exceedingly common. But, I guess determining how common that might be is one of the goals of the search.

Interesting. I wonder if readers of vertically written languages are less (or maybe more) prone to dyslexia?

And it could be seen as a perverse incentive for governments to make it too easy for people who are an economic and budgetary burden to end their own lives.

To a lesser extent, that's part of what hospice / palliative care is. Not to the extent that it's purely recreational, but often involve continued use of opiods for pain management.

magicnubs··on America’s Need for Skilled Immigrants Isn’t Going Away
I don't see any country adopting these policies, considering they want more and less expensive skilled workers, and depriving another country of their skilled workers isn't a deterrent (and may even be viewed as a positive, depending on if they view the global economy as a zero-sum game).

Or at least, having one big company serving 100 people can be more efficient than 10 smaller companies delivering 10 people each a similar service.

Also because metformin (last I heard) is considered exceedingly safe and almost universally beneficial--so much so that some recommend prescribing it to everyone over a certain age.
magicnubs··on The Student Loan Debt Crisis Is About to Get Worse
I agree--maybe it's because HN skews so heavily towards the other end, that the grass just looks that much greener, but it has a really strange and inaccurate perception of blue collar work. I've worked in a range of blue collar jobs (from landscaping to construction to electrical). Around here at least, the pay ranged from absymal ($8/hr) for unskilled to ($12/hr) for apprentice-level work, less than half of what an untrained, fresh-out-of-college, entry-level position in my current field pays (40-45K), with a much lower ceiling for advancement unless, maybe, if you operate your own business. The hours were terrible (7am-5:30pm Monday-Saturday), and on average required 30-60 minutes commute each way depending on where the job site was, with a "travel allotment" that didn't even cover the fuel costs for my cheap hybrid car, much less depreciation (I was put up in a motel when at sites more than 90-120 minutes away from home). I think people here abhor staring at the same computer screen all day (which I fully admit can be a bummer), and they think a job "working out in the sunshine where you don't have to think hard all day" sounds good. It is absolute hell on your body, and you're working in all kinds of weather in all manner of dirty, dingy environments at all times of the year--some days it's 105 degrees, some days it's 5 degrees. It's loud, stressful, exhausting, repetitive, and often dangerous work, and there's no way I'd go back to it.

magicnubs··on Lyft and Uber Won’t Be Happy Until They’re Your One-Stop Transit Guide
Yeah, I think it's more likely to work like there's some psuedo-integration and more standard data-sharing between Uber/Lyft and transport hub owners. An added check-box to schedule an Uber or Lyft when you're purchasing your train/plane ticket, with U/L paying a percentage of each ride to the rail company/airport. That also allows U/L to better predict how many vehicles they would need to have on standby for arriving passengers, even being able to update on the fly as they receive info on delays and routing changes. I doubt they're at all interested in owning a airline.
