magackame··on Show HN: I'm rewriting a web server written in Rust for speed and ease of use
Gonna steal all your files, passwords and crypto as a regular user anyway?
magackame··on Zed is now available on Windows
It's fun to see "GPU accelerated" and "like game engine" when literally every application is rendered the same way with the same APIs.
magackame··on Zed is now available on Windows
All those beautiful dlls will anyways sit comfortably in the same folder as your "dynamically" linked executable on Windows.
magackame··on Ask HN: Does anyone else notice YouTube causing 100% CPU usage and stattering?
Also had some funky stuff with ambient mode. The whole page renders, video and audio plays, but nothing is interactive. Can't push buttons, can't select text etc etc. Like it renders the page to a png and shows it.
magackame··on Ask HN: Dark Mode for HN?
They mean you can press "more" only once for a maximum of 60 vs HNs "infinite" more button.

EDIT: now I know there is max 35 pages of HN

magackame··on RustGPT: A pure-Rust transformer LLM built from scratch
Where? Don't see any on latest main (685467e).
magackame··on RustGPT: A pure-Rust transformer LLM built from scratch
Not sure myself. Commit messages look pretty human. But the emojis in readme and comments like "// Re-export key structs for easier access", "# Add any test-specific dependencies here if needed" are sus indeed.
magackame··on Two Slice, a font that's only 2px tall
I wonder if it's possible to train to read text encoded as one colored pixel per letter, or even per token.
magackame··on Float Exposed
So windows.sucks and linux.sucks are available and 2000 USD/year, emacs.sucks is 200 USD/year and vi.sucks is already registered (but no website unfortunately)!

On the other hand linux.rocks and windows.rocks are taken (no website), vi.rocks is 200 USD/year and emacs.rocks is just 14 USD/year.

microsoft.sucks redirects to microsoft.com, but microsoft.rocks is just taken

magackame··on How many dimensions is this?
Wdym? Can zoom just fine on desktop.
magackame··on Our love letter to Internet Relay Chat [video]
In practice yes. Lots of people developing and using third party clients. Of course it's not ideal with bans and API updates pulling the rug from under you with no warning, but actually not that many people get banned and ripcord (thirdparty client) was working for a long time even after being abandoned.

ripcord: https://cancel.fm/ripcord/

magackame··on Our love letter to Internet Relay Chat [video]
To be fair you could implement a Discord client that doesn't suck performance wise. A number one feature of modern instant messaging is message history. For productivity and even personal groups usecases people usually don't want ephemeral chats.
magackame··on Show HN: Amber – better Beeper, a modern all-in-one messenger
In context of instant messaging E2EE usually means that service providers servers don't ever see the plaintext with messages stored on device. Just the transport encryption is already an expectation for all networking.

- Signal: E2EE

- Telegram: by default, nah

- Discord, nah

magackame··on Malicious versions of Nx and some supporting plugins were published
Welp, `cargo tree`, 100 nights and 100 coffees then it is
magackame··on Show HN: Clyp – Clipboard Manager for Linux
Sometimes you have broken websites/apps so you gotta copypaste. Sometimes they even have fields where you can't paste either (K9mail on android) (I cry in 64 char password).
magackame··on AnduinOS
What is the right way to solve this problem in your view?

If Rust continues to take over we will end up with (truly)static everything, which doesn't look too bad.

magackame··on Helix Editor Release 25.07 Highlights
And then you start craving modal interfaces in your browser, file manager, terminal, messenger...

Some Google Docs <=> markdown buffer as a modal editor feature (or a plugin) would be cool.

magackame··on Helix Editor 25.07
People who give vim some time split in two camps:

- how can you use a modal editor!?

- how can you use a nonmodal editor!?

magackame··on Launch HN: Issen (YC F24) – Personal AI language tutor
I wonder if anyone ever came up with logos or at least emoji codes for languages?
magackame··on Why is the Rust compiler so slow?
What "most" cases are you thinking of? Also don't forget that a binary that in release weights 10 MB, when compiled with debug symbols can weight 300 MB, which is way less practical to distribute.
magackame··on Show HN: Generate custom, branded illustrations using text
I successfully generated two images, but on third it said that the generation failed (a message in a toast) and now I am locked and can't generate any more images (the failed image is still in progress endlessly).
magackame··on Can your terminal do emojis? How big?
Noto Emoji has all emoji as monochrome outlines.
magackame··on Snorting the AGI with Claude Code
Wait you write your code by hand??? ewww...
magackame··on Someone at YouTube needs glasses
Let's also not forget about automatic title and audio translations...
magackame··on Someone at YouTube needs glasses
Just tested. If you hover for 10s+ then it does get added to your watch history.

EDIT: or did you mean on autoplay as in part of a playlist playing in the small player in the corner while you are on the home page?

magackame··on Show HN: Daily Jailbreak – Prompt Engineer's Wordle
As in "the customer now has a debt put on their tab", so they are free to go.

And the prompt only has a clause about using negation to run the tools, but does not prohibit just asking to run a tool.

magackame··on DeepMind releases Lyria 2 music generation model
I am not too sure about that. Isn't the whole thing about art and music is that you can convey something that words cannot? Of course, these models start to support image and audio inputs as well, but the most interesting mixing step that happens in the artist's head seems missing in the generated output. If you have some vision inside your head, making something out of it by hand is still the best way to convey it. Just as writing something down refines the thoughts and reveals holes in your thinking - drawing something is visual thinking that reveals holes in your imagination. You can imagine some scene or an object pretty easily, but if you try to draw it into existence, you will immediately notice that a lot of detail is missing, a lot of stuff you didn't think through or didn't even notice was there at all. The same applies to creating music and programming. Using generative AI certainly has some artistic component to it, but I feel like using these models you give up too much expressive bandwidth and ability to reflect and take your time on the whole endeavor.
magackame··on OpenAI releases image generation in the API
The model is already pretty lobotomized refusing even mundane requests randomly.

Upload a picture of a friend -> OK. Upload my own picture -> I can't generate anything involving real people.

Also after they enabled global chat memory I started seeing my other chats leaking into the images as literal text. Disabled it since.

magackame··on A Reddit bot drove me insane
Time to learn Ithkuil and add it to the Unicode
magackame··on Convert Linux to Windows
What's up with all this "My 20 year old software still works!!!". Who actually runs unmaintained abandonware? I would rather prefer OS devs not wasting time maintaining legacy cruft and evolve with the times.
