maephisto··on Uber is officially a cab firm, says European court
Looks like the "Regulate Uber everywhere" trend is confirmed. Edit: I did not mean this as a bad thing, but as something that's normal and welcomed.
maephisto··on Ask HN: Starting a startup in Europe while employed
Probably best thing to do would be to talk about it with your employer and ask for a written agreement. If it's not conflicting in any way most employers will accept.
maephisto··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2017?
Worth mentioning: 1. Ready Player One 2. On The Road (re-read)
maephisto··on Overture JS – A powerful basis for building web applications
"powerful", "really slick", "awesome". For a tool aimed at developers, I'd surely enjoy more technical terms.
maephisto··on [dead]
A company that does not trust the employees and tracks them is a company that runs by all the wrong principles. And most likely one in which you don't really want to work in. Also, is it just me or that "friend that is tracked" story sounds a bit manufactured?
maephisto··on Show HN: Shazam-like acoustic fingerprinting of continuous audio streams
Awesome share!
maephisto··on macOS High Sierra: Anyone can login as “root” with empty password
iRoot. uRoot. Everybody Root.
maephisto··on Bitcoin passes 10,000 USD
Even if it's not > 10k on all markets it's gonna get there in the next hours
maephisto··on Facebook users in Romania see content related to street protests reviewed
That's most likely the case. There's even no need for bots or automated ways, the ruling party has a lot of followers which are know to follow orders. Plus, there's been plenty of times when they bought votes and people support.
maephisto··on Can the new Firefox Quantum regain its web browser market share?
No, no chance Firefox could get back to owning 20% or 30% again. Just look around you, how many of the people you know made the switch? Most of the people I know gave the new FF a try, concluded that it's fine and got back to Chrome. Right now, there's just no reason to switch. Also, everybody's going about FF consuming less memory than Chrome, but in my short personal test there was no real difference.
maephisto··on Startup Mistakes: Choice of Datastore
yes, yes, yes.
maephisto··on Startup Mistakes: Choice of Datastore
Uhmm, the article actually contained the phrases "Don't use Mongo" and "pick PostgreSQL" so it's kinda asking for a duel between the two in the comments.
maephisto··on Startup Mistakes: Choice of Datastore
Agree, the mantra of success is: GET SHIT DONE! Customers do not care what's your code coverage or how maintainable is your code. Or if it's Mongo or Postgres. They want features, they want it now, and if you can't deliver that because you are too busy refactoring that's bad.
maephisto··on Startup Mistakes: Choice of Datastore
Well, this discussion here is now about Mongo
maephisto··on Startup Mistakes: Choice of Datastore
TL;DR: Trust me. I should know.
maephisto··on Startup Mistakes: Choice of Datastore
that is tomorrow's rant.
maephisto··on Startup Mistakes: Choice of Datastore
Yup, people stuck on optimising (or overthinking which datastore to use) before actually having a business are missing the point.
maephisto··on Startup Mistakes: Choice of Datastore
MongoDB/NoSQL is deployed and used at large scale by companies like Facebook, Ebay and many others. That's quite far from "no one is actually making that choice nowadays".
maephisto··on How Firefox Got Fast Again
Wasn't really aware about MoCo and their deals with all major search engines.
maephisto··on How Firefox Got Fast Again
One thing that troubles me is why does a non profit open source browser buy premium offline ad space to promote itself? There's a huge "The new Firefox" ad in down-town Berlin.
maephisto··on Save your ticket for Disrupt Berlin Hackathon 2017
Was fighting with the idea that I'll have to constantly keep an eye on TechCrunch's Twitter account, waiting for "The Tweet", where tickets are being made available. But, in the tradition of a hackathon, why not hack it ?! So I made myself a bot that streams in all TC Twitter activity and emails/texts me when tickets are available. That went out pretty smoothly, so why not make it public, for other to use too. The final result it's what you now see at https://getmetothehackathon.co/ Feel free to use it and join me at the Disrupt Berlin Hackathon.
maephisto··on Ask HN: How was your experience with AWS Lambda in production?
A couple of months ago, I've started using AWS Lambda for a side project. The actual functions were pretty easy to code using `nodejs` and deploying them with `serverless` but the boilerplate to opening them via an http API was the real bummer. IAMs, routing and all kind of other little things standing in the way of actual productive work. Some time after that I tried to setup GCloud Functions and to my surprise that boilerplate was minimal! Write your function and have accessible with just a couple of commands. IMHO GCloud Functions is way more developer friendly and AWS Lambda.
maephisto··on Fun at the Unix Terminal
A couple of days ago I created “jazzup” a fun cli utility that adds a soundtrack and movie quotes to your long running boring commands. Check it out on npm : https://www.npmjs.com/package/jazzup
