maeil··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
> It feels like the government has been incredibly out of touch for the last number of years.

Did you vote for any single one of them?

If you did, then what you're supposed to do is stop voting for Tory-lite governments (such as the current one).

If you didn't vote for any of these governments (including this one), everything else that you could do would be dangerous nowadays.

Depends on if the US emperor and his cronies have the UK's backs on this issue. If they don't, calling the bluff would work, there's zero chance the UK gov would ban Apple products without US approval. The backlash among the public would be far worse than the TikTok ban. Imagine all companies using Macs. The order of power here is US > Apple > UK.

maeil··on DOGE puts $1 spending limit on government employee credit cards
> At some point Canada shuts off electricity transfer to the US and restricts water transfer

This is what won't happen. People are far, far too comfortable for that, you'd need to see 30%+ unemployment rates for that to change.

It's very sad that the Nazis made eugenics into a taboo for the next century. The conclusion of WW2 should've been the opposite - narcissism and lack of empathy (also known as psychopathy) endanger the entire world and need to be minimized in the gene pool. It is, of course, too late now.

An engadget article is a different order of magnitude than MSM. Of course tech people have always known what they're really like.
maeil··on Ray-Ban Meta glasses have sold 2M units, production to be increased
The second they make this and make it useful in any way, immediately the apps people create will lay bare exactly how bad of a privacy invasion they are, tons of bad press ensuing.

It's definitely not technical hurdles preventing them from making one.

maeil··on Svelte 5 is not JavaScript
> My personal problem with JavaScript is that things keep changing too much.

JavaScript itself barely changes - it's the flavor-of-the-month frontend frameworks that do. What language feature is commonly used now that wasn't 5 years ago? Some nicer builtin Array methods I guess?

There's a lot of dislike on here for Typescript as a backend language. But the difference with the frontend world with its dozen everchanging frameworks is striking. On the backend side, most projects don't even use a framework, and for those that do basically all of them use the same one (NestJS). And the rate of breaking changes on that has been much lower than something like React.

Of course, many will say that this lack of industry-wide adopted framework in itself is what they dislike about it. But it's hard to settle on that golden mean inbetween both extremes when it's the most popular language in the world (in terms of "Yearly new LOC going into production"). Python makes for a good contrast, with a dozen popularish backend frameworks. Not sure if that's really a better situation to be in, there's pros and cons.

maeil··on PG&E reports profit of more than $2B for 2024
>Capitalism with strict regulation?

This gets regulatory captured/lobbied away over by monied interests.

>Profit caps?

This is simply a subset of "capitalism with strict regulation". Implementing profit caps in a manner without loopholes takes detailed regulations and a judicial branch that strictly enforces them. This too will get regulatory captured/lobbied away over time.

Another issue with this is that ironically a proper implementation of this would receive even more pushback than nationalization. Why? Because you have to cap e.g. shareholder returns, otherwise it introduces awful incentives, as we're seeing with this exact case where there's a "profit margin % cap". You'd also need exec compensation caps.

I do have a relatively straightforward idea for this, though I'm sure there are holes in it that I haven't thought of - market cap growth caps. To give an example, let's say we set the cap at 5% YoY. Then if the market cap instead grows 10% in a given year, the company is forced to issue an additional ~5% of shares (of the total number of outstanding shares), which all directly go to the government. The government will then sell these evenly distributed over the next year, on the market.

Feels like this has far less loopholes than any kind of profit or revenue tax.

> “Common carrier” type of deal to allow any player to compete in an energy market, trying to stop behemoth entities from monopolistic?

See above, another subset of the category.

> Non-profit

Ah, like OpenAI? Or the one U2 has in The Netherlands?

>Capitalism with minimal regulation?

This option isn't even worth discussing.

> Government run?

This too can get lobbied away over time, as we've seen, but it takes the longest to do so, and is therefore the correct answer to the question.

I present you Honest ChillyATC: https://honest-chillyatc.vercel.app/

Edit: Added Airport and chill music station dropdowns.

I thought it wasn't really cool to embed these streams from volunteer-run (both), donation-supported (SomaFM) and grift it with BuyMeACoffee/Product Hunt. And when SomaFM doesn't like it and reasonably blocks it through CORS, to proxy around it. And not respond to anyone bringing it up here.

OpenAI et al have taught us that breaking millions of website ToCs is completely meaningless.

Soma rightfully seem to have just enabled CORS though after seeing this traffic spike.

Edit: And now OP just started proxying around it, hilariously adversarial when embedding a donation-based service.

It is a single party dictatorship, and you're already implying it:

>The original GOP...

Is not the current party in power. Hence why you're making that distinction - the party of 10 years ago doesn't matter anymore, it's irrelevant. If you believe that Trump getting a deadly heart attack tomorrow would bring the coup to a sudden end, I've got bad news for you.

Yes.

No.

"Recent studies have found tire particles made up 94% of microplastics in Switzerland, 61 to 79% in Sweden, 54% in China and 30% in Germany".

"If everyone just drove EVs we could merrily go on driving cars all day" is the 'r/HeadInTheSand mentality'.

maeil··on Anthropic's next major AI model could arrive within weeks
They have the preferred model for almost anything that reasoning isn't a perfect fit for, and even on those tasks only O1 wins consistently, for >10x pricing and latency.

Even for reasoning-beneficial tasks you can just CoT Sonnet and it works well, just yesterday I had a task's performance strongly improved by it.

maeil··on Anthropic's next major AI model could arrive within weeks
https://openrouter.ai/rankings

This tells you a lot in terms of real-world usage. Claude is relatively expensive + openrouter users are generally price-conscious, yet it still crushes everything else. If investors are demanding new models that'd be absurdly short-sighted, on the level of if Apple investors would suddenly want bi-annual iPhone releases instead of annual ones.

Imo Anthropic's continued stability issues are also just due to extreme demand. Very telling too that everyone continues to build their products on top of them despite far more downtime than OpenAI, clearly it's worth it.

maeil··on Anthropic's next major AI model could arrive within weeks
I'd be surprised, they have little reason to do this right now unless they're taking on o1.

> Both house and senate representatives made up of republican or democrat parties (not just ONE single party) were elected in November 2024 and that election had multiple parties involved and the ones before it with congress still here afterwards.

Again, the exact same can be said for Russia. All of your arguments can be applied to claim Russia is not a one-party dictatorship. Following your exact line of reasoning, either both are, or neither are.

Besides, the exact event this article is discussing has the ruling party completely ignoring decisions by congress, meaning there isn't even the veneer of it mattering in the first place.

maeil··on TikTok is back in the App Store
I am the parent commenter, I'm afraid you failed to read that.

Russia having an opposition party doesn't make it less of a single-party dictatorship. Same goes for the US.

maeil··on TikTok is back in the App Store
I strongly doubt those immigrants are causing any of that, rather than the enormous online reach of Tate et. al alt-right along with Russia-backed campaigns, and now Musk over the last decade. Those have left a large impact even in countries with zero American immigrants to speak of. That's a much more likely cause.
maeil··on TikTok is back in the App Store
You still don't get it, and aren't acknowledging the bottom of the slippery slope. You're part of the group I was targeting.

Laws have been shown to now be entirely meaningless, yet you continue to suggest energy should be put into going through the courts.

That's the whole point, this entire action entirely ignores both Congress and SCOTUS, the law doesn't matter.

maeil··on TikTok is back in the App Store
> You need to read your comment again as this is just beyond hysterical.

Absurd thing to say, are you really this unfamiliar with other countries, such as Russia? Never heard of Navalny? Don't know that he was an opposition leader? Or that Russia is indeed a single-party dictatorship?

maeil··on TikTok is back in the App Store
In April 1933, Germany had JUST had an election with multiple parties.

In December 1917, Russia had just had such an election.

In May 1924, Italy had just had such an election.

In June 1946, Czechoslovakia had just had such an election.

And almost immediately afterwards, each became a single-party dictatorship.

maeil··on TikTok is back in the App Store
By Jan 19, which has passed, so I think you may not be fully aware of that law.
maeil··on TikTok is back in the App Store
The coup is complete. Laws passed by Congress and upheld by the Supreme Court now mean nothing.

The sooner people stop talking about it as if the US is still only "sliding down the path", and start publicly admitting the reality that they now live in a single-party dictatorship á la Russia and China where the rules are whatever the leader says they are, the better.

I know this isn't easy as it takes time to change decades of reinforcement of the tribal ingroup/outgroup neural pathways where "Russia and China" were seen as contrasts to the US. But y'all can do it. Start by uttering the words out loud to yourself. Break through that first "denial" stage of grief.
