madengr··on The future is in symmetrical, high-speed internet speeds
1000/40 is $270/month here in USA. Fortunately Google Fiber just dug up the neighborhood so hopefully I’ll have 2000/1000 before the end of the year, for 1/2 that cost.
madengr··on Electron tube New Automatic Computer
We did the same in my EE program, though we were allowed to use a ROM for the microcode and some 8-bit registers from the TTL family. I never had time to build it either as it’s too much for a single semester class.
madengr··on Breakthrough in 3D scanning means results are 4500% more accurate
More accuracy may be better, but I’d like to see a quick method of extracting analytic geometry from a 3D scan.

We have laser scanners and Faro arms at work, and in the end it’s a person manually entering the geometry into Solidworks as the point cloud is useless.

madengr··on Let's Build a Chip with Math
This is why I only do chips with one transistor, but it’s a very expensive transistor.
madengr··on Off the Grid Messenger
I’d be all over that HT if they would enable DMR. It has all the hardware to do it, and you’d get Kenwood quality in a DMR. Right now I have an Anytone (Chinese crap) for DMR and Yeasu for Fusion.
madengr··on Off the Grid Messenger
Several radios have built in APRS messaging, but it’s extremely frustrating to use as non have implemented predictive text entry.

That said, the SX1276 covers both 2m and 70cm, and has FSK mode, so this project has the hardware to do APRS, though I don’t see schematics on how the RF chain is implemented.

madengr··on Why do recipe writers lie about how long it takes to caramelize onions? (2012)
I recently put in a 36 kW (125 kBTU/hr) wok burner, outdoors of course. It’s insane how hot it gets.

madengr··on Taking students from schematic to silicon in one semester (2018) [pdf]
No, they have a harness called Caravan that has no I/O buffers. I calculated Ft=65 GHz on this process and have a 1-15 GHz amp working in simulation (pre-extraction), though I don’t know if I’ll have time to apply for the next run.
madengr··on Oregon has legalized human composting
Could be worse. Check out this hog composting:

madengr··on Starlink dishes go into “thermal shutdown” once they hit 122° Fahrenheit
I design RF/Microwave hardware. The issue is the long term reliability, specifically the semiconductor lifetime drops drastically with temperature, not to mention the passive components. The temp cycling may be more of an issue, as I have seen antenna arrays pull themselves apart during accelerated lifetime testing. I shutdown all of my stuff at 80C.
madengr··on Manufacturing next-generation electronics like they are T-Shirts
LTCC has used screen printing of conductive pastes for decades.

madengr··on “Great resignation” wave coming for companies
I agree. I had two weeks off between grad school and my current job. I’ve been maxing out my 401k for 25 years and have zero debt (mortgage paid off 2 years ago). Could actually retire now at 49.
madengr··on “Great resignation” wave coming for companies
Sounds like my employer, and I’ve been on-site for 1 year. Their excuse for 2% raises was that the economy was bad, despite record earnings and productivity during the pandemic. Now that inflation is 5%, I’m gone with another 2% raise.
madengr··on California homeowners made more money in equity than workers made in income
They didn’t “make” anything, though perhaps when they sell they will make some money, unless everyone else decides to sell at the same time. It’s just a game of musical chairs. They only one making anything is the federal reserve; they are literally making money.
madengr··on Software is eating the car
Here here. I was looking just yesterday to see if a John Deere Gator (or equivalent) is street legal. The answer is yes, with a few parts.

I want my 87’ Toyota pickup back with it’s solid state ignition and carburetor. It’s been down hill since then.

madengr··on The Cerebras CS-2 wafer-scale engine (850k cores, 40 GB SRAM)
Wouldn’t these things, like quantum computers, be leased? The complexity is getting so high that you would need full time staff dedicated just to that hardware. At least if it goes belly up, you are not stuck with unsupported hardware.
madengr··on Resistor Noise Can Be Deafening, and Hard to Reduce (2007)
Since the amplifier has both voltage and current input noise sources, there is an optimum source impedance that provides a minimum noise figure, and it’s not an impedance match. This is called a minimum noise match, along with associated noise contours where noise is traded off with impedance match.

Also, the noise from an antenna is dependent on it’s efficiency and what it’s pointing at. Even if it’s input impedance is 50 Ohms, it can generate far less noise than the equivalent resistor.

madengr··on Fedora contemplates the driverless printing future
I’ve had 3 Brother printers on Linux with zero issues. They work immediately with the standard Fedora printer setup.
madengr··on Bosch opens German chip plant
They probably don’t have the manpower. The Asian countries produce hardware engineers at 10x that of the west, and with a much larger population, have a vast talent pool.
madengr··on Software maker Altium rejects $3.9B takeover bid from Autodesk
Altium is definitely mid-range on the price point. Mentor and Cadence are 10x.
madengr··on Software maker Altium rejects $3.9B takeover bid from Autodesk
There are CAD companies that sell for far less that have much more complex software.
madengr··on Software maker Altium rejects $3.9B takeover bid from Autodesk
The nice thing about Altium is that they also cater to low profile customers, like me. I have been using it for 27 years, and if Autodesk buys it, it may turn to shit; probably some cloud BS, which is the way things are going.
madengr··on Why are American workers becoming harder to find?
Ha ha, sounds like my DSP class in grad school. 27 Asians and three white guys.
madengr··on Laser pulse travels 300 times faster than light (2002)
They should send 0.2 ns long random bits through it, see if they get the data faster than light out the other end. Me thinks that won’t work.
madengr··on Meritocracy Is a Myth
You do realize the average lifespan is about 80, and people have kids in their 20/30s, which puts the typical age of inheritance in the 50/60s, who themselves are already near retirement age. It’s not as if you have a bunch of 18 YO using inheritance to gain edge. There are taxes on gifts, so parents can’t just give their kids more then $15k without massive taxation. Hell, you can’t even invest more than $2k/year tax free for college savings.
madengr··on Leaked Walmart memo reveals competitive threats
Costco is like Sam’s Club, but without the tattoos.
madengr··on Real-time Netlisting in KiCad [video]
I’m still paying for Altium. Last time I tried KiCAD I couldn’t assign a net to arbitrary polygons, which is critical for RF work. It still has a ways to go to catch up with Altium, which is $2k/year maintenance.
madengr··on Why workers are calling BS on leaders about returning to the office
We had higher billable hours during the summer lockdown than ever, though they still came up with the excuse for 2% raises; “well the economy is not good”.
madengr··on Can Electronics made of COTS components work at cryogenic temperatures? (2020)
I have designed some satellite microwave PA, and the thermal ranges were -20C to +70C, but yes, not even an industrial temperature range.

The biggest issue is getting heat out, though my module was on a cold plate and I doubt it was ever cycled to those ranges.

The concern was keeping output power and current within spec over those ranges; getting enough output power (within distortion specs) at hot, and keeping the current under spec at cold (so as not to trip a breaker).

madengr··on Phil's Old Radios
I doubt it in the USA. Digital radio has been around for a while, but has never taken off. I hope it stays that way. One could hack together a DAB to FM converter that gangs onto the radio dial for tuning.
